Moonstruck (1987)
Love the premise
This was one of the first movies I saw after my divorce! I fell in love with Cher's character and then with her mother's character! Those two women made the film IMHO. I also liked how the moon affected everyone! My favorite part was the Opera. It was bound to happen. In a city of several million, two people who shouldn't meet up somehow do! Serves them right. Olympia Dukakis played her part brilliantly! Family drama is a favorite of mine and this one is now a favorite movie of mine! Two brothers who couldn't have been more different both vying for the attention of the same woman. Who will win her?
Ordinary Angels (2024)
Angels walk among us
Wasn't sure how this story would play out--I wasn't disappointed. Loving mother dies leaving her widowed husband to raise their two girls. Unfortunately, the younger one needs a new liver. Along comes Sharon. A beautician who in spite of her own issues, makes the decision to help this family. Mountainous bills overwhelm the dad until Susan takes charge. Fundraising, corporate donations of money and a private plane are just a few of the tricks up her sleeve. I was especially drawn to this time frame as I was pregnant in 1993 and gave birth to my daughter in 1994. She lives in Louisville. I am looking forward to viewing it again.
The Boys in the Boat (2023)
Underdog Story
What a beautifully done film from the book of the same name. I had not read the book but it was one that my husband adored. The story centers on Joe Rantz. He is so poor, he stuffs his holey shoes with newspaper. Living in his truck as he has no home, he is struggling with paying for college. No parents or siblings for support, he hears about the rowing team. If he makes it, he will have a place to live and a job. The practices are grueling but Joe sticks it out and makes the team! We rooted on the entire eight-man crew as they begin to win when no one really expected them to! A true underdog story worth your time!
Last Christmas (2019)
Beautiful
This has everything for a lovely Christmas movie. Angst, family, and a meeting of an angel! I have watched this five times now - including when it was a theatrical release - and I still sob at the end. Emilia Clarke is terrific as the young woman looking for a better life. We learn she has been ill but nothing more than that. Her immigrant family faces challenges as the country wants immigrants out! She works in a Christmas store but has issues with the owner. She continually makes mistakes until she meets Tom. He helps her with how she views herself and does more for than we can see. She begins to be a giver and to help others.
Father Stu (2022)
Powerful
I believe this movie is easier to 'get' if you are a cradle Catholic. So much of it is part of what we learn from the time that we are baptized. I was in tears by the end of the movie as the older I get, the more death becomes real. Stuart was lost and struggling with what to do with his life. He meets a man in a bar that later he is unable to find. He is in a horrific accident when the Blessed Mother appears to him. What should Stuart do? His life is a mess. As he heals he believes that God is calling him to become a priest! The church doesn't want him but no matter. He fights for the right to become a priest. Will this ever happen?
Deep Impact (1998)
Heartbreaking & pulse-pounding
This was on TV today. Decided to watch as I had never seen it. Wow! I cannot begin to fathom how I would act knowing that life as we know it is about to end. Who would you want to be with? Who would you want to say goodbye to? What would you do to help, if you could?
These brave folks carried on knowing that they may die. The special effects for 1998 were breathtaking! I really felt those waves coming over those left behind as it sucked them into a watery grave. The ones who were selected to get to the ARK caves would be the new earth! They were to start life over.
I am glad I finally watched this.
Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023)
Terrible Sequel
My Book Club was excited to see this as we had loved the first one. What a disappointment. The women looked ridiculous in some of their outfits and the language was terrible. The double entendres were predictable and unfunny. The saving grace in the whole film were the husbands/boyfriends! The scenery was beautiful but seriously, how many women of a certain age could afford to go to Italy as a girls' trip? Or to walk around? This whole sequel seemed to be thrown together to cash in on the first movie--which was hilarious and refreshing! Those ladies were fun and funny! This time around, they seemed to be tiresome and tired. I wouldn't waste your money!
Five More Minutes: Moments Like These (2022)
Tears
I really loved this film! If you have never lost someone, you may not get into this movie. If you have lost someone, this film may make you feel better!
I love Ashley Williams as an actress. She does a remarkable job of an angst-ridden mom. A single parent's job is tough.
Adam is a sweet boy who really misses his dad! When he starts to make friends, it is so lovely to see him come out of his shell. Without giving anything away, I loved how he warmed up to all of the strangers he met.
The original Five More Minutes movie was a favorite and this one is becoming one as well. Trying to navigate what your children want vs what is best for them can be heart-wrenching!
Blue Steel (1990)
Intense
I thought that Jamie Lee Curtis was superb! I rarely review movies but after seeing the low ratings, I wanted to see why folks gave this such low marks. Every movie won't be a 10-star; however, this one held my interest from beginning to end.
Spotlighting the mental health issues of the killer did not make me feel one bit sorry for him. He was supposedly a big shot in his field. How was he able to do so if he claimed to hear 'voices'.
Jamie's character's relationship with her her parents was interesting. I felt that she handled their issues with a little compassion but mostly disgust.
Again, not a 10-star but time well spent!
Elvis (2022)
The Elvis my mother loved!
I was only 22 when Elvis died but as my mother adored him, I grew up with his music!
Austin did an outstanding job as Elvis. His voice, his moves, he was the entire package! On the flip side, Tom Hanks as the colonel was loathsome--he made me hate Colonel Parker!
My husband and I both enjoyed this movie very much! Now, I need to order several Elvis CD's!
Bullet Train (2022)
Not What You're Expecting!
Sandra Bullock is my favorite actress so wanted to see this. Wow! Brad Pitt as a bumbling goofball taking instructions from Bullock's character because some other agent called off. Talk about Murphy's Law! Whatever can go wrong, will! This movie appears to be a violent, bloody mess (it is that), but ends up laugh out loud hysterical! If you like Brad Pitt, you will love this film!
A Patch of Blue (1965)
Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder
I love this movie. If we all could learn to love with our hearts, what a wonderful world it would be!
Elizabeth Harman is superb in her first major role. Sidney Poitier is his usual amazing self ... one of my all-time favorites actor!
The story begins with Selena wanting to go to the park. There, she meets Gordon. He helps her and she is so happy to have a friend!
The Little Things (2021)
Twists
I am a huge fan of both Washington and of Malek. I liked this movie. Not too intense but enough to keep you interested. It is a nice movie to pass a quiet afternoon.
The Batman (2022)
Wow! Wow! Wow!
I love Robert Pattinson. He was good in Harry Potter; great in Twilight; but as The Batman, he is superb! This movie digs a bit deeper into Batman's character than in some of the previous versions. It is gritty and dark. We meet the Penguin, Catwoman, and a very disturbed Riddler. There is just a sense of current affairs with a few references to white privilege, etc.
If you are a fan of DC comics, you will love this film. I have never read even one comic book and I love the film! I am ready to go see it again!
Death on the Nile (2022)
Fairly Close to Book
When I saw this movie was coming out, I had to check the book out of the Library first. Loved the book and LOVED the movie! Gal Gadot of Wonder Woman fame is her beautiful self in this film. The movie never bogs down, has some lush scenery, and clips along at a pace that makes it easy to follow!
Clickbait (2021)
Reporters!
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! However, I really, really, really dislike reporters who are in-your-face! I know that's their job but, seriously? If you want to enjoy this, do NOT read any spoilers ...
The McConnell Story (1955)
Great Biography
I started watching this movie without knowing anything about the characters. I fell in love with it almost immediately! In fact, I watched it a second time with my husband. The story line is easy to follow and is faithful to Joe's real life story. The fight scenes when he's serving in the Korean War were well done, in my opinion. This movie made in 1955 only a year after his death was faithful to their lives together.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
Favorite
I have only seen a few of these adaptations but this is far and away my favorite! I enjoy the psychological transformation more intense than the physical one! March was terrific but Tracy is chilling!
The Invisible Man (2020)
Alfred Hitchcock Would Approve
Decided to treat myself to a suspenseful flick for my Birthday. Wasn't sure if it would be too bloody for me but as I love suspense, decided to go. Wow! Without giving anything away, this kept me gripped from the first scene! There were several 'boo' moments that caused me to jump out of my seat! However, the whole premise and delivery were very very good! I may make my husband go see it with me!
The Open House (2018)
Stupid
Do not waste one second on this ... there is not plot nor do you ever find out exactly who is the creepy guy ... ugh ... I want that time back!
The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018)
LOVED IT!!!!!!!!
She is kick-ass and bad-ass! I will see it again and again!
