BoJack Horseman (2014–2020)
10/10
One of the best adult animated shows I've ever seen.
14 October 2016
While the first season wasn't fully developed in it's characters and situations, I still enjoyed it very much, and had developed a bit of an emotional attachment during the last 3-4 episodes. But nothing could have ever prepared me for seasons 2 and 3, which offered some of the most poignant insights into celebrity culture and the nature of depression for a multitude of characters, which had by the time become grounded in their own right, I have EVER witnessed.

I can't even put my thoughts into words for this review because I love this show so much, which is very surprising, I try to stay as formal as possible. I won't spoil anything, but there was a few different episodes in the past 2 seasons that made me cry, scream, hate, love, everything. This is really one of the few animated shows I can think of that brings on pure, unaltered moments of absolute emotion from the deep dark places of my soul. I connected in ways I never would have thought possible to Bojack, as well as a few other characters in the show. This is a must watch for anybody and everybody, you just have to get past the first half of the first season to truly start to love it.

Oh, and the show is also outstandingly funny. Worthwhile as a comedy alone.

Funnier than almost anything.
14 October 2016
I find it's dark humor and quirky well-developed characters funnier than anything I have ever seen on television, period. Pure opinion. But I don't see how anybody couldn't like it! It's nuanced, each episode boasts creative writing and an engaging story, as I've said it's characters are awesome and very funny, it's outstanding. I don't think while watching any of it's seasons I have ever had a major complaint, only minor ones like story endings or situations they found themselves in, but none of that ever deterred me from my love for the show because they have never been that noticeable, only personal issues. If you are a fan of dark, wry humor, which can occasionally veer into the awkward, than this show is definitely for you.

Rick and Morty (2013– )
10/10
It's nearly impossible not to like.
12 October 2016
It's creative, it's well-voiced, it's occasionally emotional, it's extremely creative in it's set-up and animation, it generates a lot of provocative themes in it's stories and situations, it boasts well-grounded characters, and it's so, so, so funny, it's almost impossible not to like.

It's also not as violent or as bat-s*** crazy as many of Adult Swim's shows can sometimes be, for better or worse, but this means the show can generate appeal to multiple demographics, young and old. It can be dry, and it can be a bit gross at times, but it's nothing you haven't seen from adult swim before. It's also more than anything we've seen from them.

It can be heart-wrenching, and that's hard to grasp because many of us long-time fans are a lot more used to the trippy, depraved, violent shows the company had to offer (which is not an insult, they are still awesome). But the show packs a punch in all departments, which is outstanding.

Superjail! (2007–2014)
9/10
Occasionally brilliant in it's execution.

It's the same thing I said for King Star King and Mr. Pickles: It achieves through it's design, environments, execution, and animation.

This show is one of Adult Swim's most TRIPPIEST shows. It's very violent, but it more often than not adheres to surreal comedy than violent situations, opposite to the case of Mr. Pickles (which more relies on gore to satisfy it's demographic). I love everything Adult Swim has been throwing at us as of late, and all the new seasons of Super jail are worth checking out. The characters are fun, most of them are very-well voiced, and it's just as mind-boggling as it's been from the beginning, never letting up on it's insane world and premises.

It's pretty awesome.

I love Martin Scorsese. Sometimes I hear people say he isn't as dynamic as he used to be, but I beg to differ. He's amazing. This movie's also pretty amazing, not perfect, and not his best, but definitely different than anything else he's ever done.

There are so many good things that I can say. Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Leo ARE amazing in this film. They truly came into form as their characters, as we've all come to expect. It's tone really stands tall throughout the whole movie as well, which is truly something worthy of recognition, though it does bog itself down from the start of the second half UP TO the twist ending (which I refuse to ruin, and hope nobody else does as well for ANY users on IMDb who haven't seen it yet).

It's not perfect, but it offers a sly, dark, nuanced detective story that can often be thoroughly engaging, and often heartbreaking in it's own right.

I get it, that doesn't mean I enjoy it.
12 October 2016
This is PURELY a personal review. I get everything about it: I get the dry sense of humor, I get that it's animation has to match the stories and settings they are conveying, I get everything about it and how smart it can occasionally be... That doesn't necessarily translate to entertaining, however.

I understand the appeal, which is why this is such a mixed review. I don't think the characters are enjoyable, I think that many of them are stereotypical and formulaic, and that just does not translate to relatable. Not that they are meant to be, but it'd be nice to maybe feel a little emotion when bad events take place upon them. Especially if the animation is just so bland. The fact is, when you have a show with bland characters, bland situations, bland environments, bland violence, everything else that makes the show good just seems bland. And this goes for ALL seasons for me. Not just the newer seasons, ALL of them. It can be creative though, and there's obviously a market for the kind of humor that it represents. I just don't think anything balances because there are too many weaknesses.

It's good... enough.
12 October 2016
I'm not a huge fan of Antoine Fuqua, but he has his moments. This is one of those movies of his that's just fun, and very well-made, but just sort of everything I've come to expect. From the way he shoots, to his character development, it all can feel sorta choppy to me. Do not get me wrong though, the movie is still very fun.

I don't want this review to be based purely from a narrative perspective, because at the end of the day, this is a remake of a remake we are dealing with here, so we know it's more about the $. So I will give it it's credit where it's due, it's action can be BREATHTAKING at times. In fact, I'm going to make an early prediction that it's gonna be nominated for a fair share of "technical" Oscars, maybe even win for sound design. I thought that the actors, too did very well with their parts, especially Ethan Hawke, who shined for me PERSONALLY. It's popcorn fun, with little depth, but that's what I thought it would be when I went into it, so at least I wasn't expecting anything more. (this would have been a lower rating if that were the case)

Mr. Pickles (2013–2019)

It's great for SOME people
12 October 2016
"This show is not for everyone" should be this show's goddamn tag-line or something. It's violent, and constantly shoves it's satanic references and disgusting body-humor down your throat AT ALL TIMES.

You need a stomach for this kind of show, and if you have it, it's really, really fun. You can't knock it for not being creative. A lot of the voice actors for characters in the show aren't amazing, but at least most of them are convincing, it's stories in each episode are, as well, average but good enough. Where it really shines is how well it handles it's violent situations and characters. One scene can go from seemingly harmless to absolute insanity in the blink of an eye, and it never feels too rushed or out of place. This is mostly due to the fact that the only scenes containing elements of torture, violence, hacking, sawing, and pretty much any other disgustingly gory act you can possibly think of are so brief and inventive in it's own sorta way, that after a while, it becomes normal within the show's confined universe.

King Star King (2013–2023)

An absolute mind rape
12 September 2016
I'm glad I decided to check out King Star King for a few different reasons.

For one thing, the character designs are OUT OF THIS WORLD. It's insane, on a creative and artistic level, how well drawn and choreographed the animation and movements are when it comes to the unique characters that inhabit this strange, violent, sex-obsessed dimension.

Another is the surprisingly well-conceived stories and events that take place within the short run-time of each episode. While most stories seem pretty simple for the most part, it's hard to make such a surreal experience of a show whilst giving the audience a story and something to think about, and this does exactly that.

It's pure crazy, and not for everyone, but for those with a stomach for gross-out body humor, graphic (near-depraved) animated nudity, and an open mind, it doesn't disappoint.
