Atypical: Dead Dreams (2021)
Research ? !
I would be on board, as a fellow Antarctic geek, but did they do any research for this? The food descriptions, the role of Shackleton's wife, and so on - all wrong! I know this wouldn't irritate most people, but it is adding to the sarcastic tone of a lot of the episodes now, so I don't know how long I can keep watching this. I used to love it!
Wild Wild Country (2018)
Enlightening
I agree this was very long, but it was the abundance of detail and source material that was so interesting and clarifying. A lot of the reviewers here seem to be saying that it was biased towards the Rajneeeshi, simply because the producers took care to present their side at all. For me, the townspeople were prejudiced from the start, rather than making any attempt to understand where these people were coming from. Perhaps if they had been more open-minded and had seen the development of the ranch as an opportunity for a dying village, the whole thing might not have ramped up into violence and eventual failure on both sides.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Pursuit (2011)
Could have been better
An interesting atory line, but would have been so much better with a better actor than Deborah Messing. She really was terrible in this part. Wooden doesn't begin to describe it. Maybe they hired her to have a big name in the show.
Carrie Pilby (2016)
Okay, with a couple of flaws...
A good, engaging film, fairly standard romcom stuff though. Marred for me by the annoyingness of the title character, and also the fact that they would keep saying 'Franny and Zoe'. The title of the book is 'Franny and Zooey', and I thought it is generally acknowledged to be pronounced Zooey!
You (2018)
Of its time
This is a very shallow and derivative show, but very much of its time. It is smug and self-congratualtory, patting itself on the back for promoting books and reading, when in fact the books are seen as mere commmodities, and nothing worthwhile said about literature. The main characters are annoying, Beck presented as a 'writer', in line with the vast numbers of semi-educated 'bloggers' and 'influencers' who pretemd to be writers in social media land. Avoid if you have any brains, otherwise it will just irritate the crap out of you!
