Before I Fall (2017)
decent soundtrack
Yep, I'm only here to say that I enjoyed this movie for the soundtrack. I'm over the age of 18, and while I love a good teen flick, this didn't translate well into adulthood.
Werewolves Within (2021)
this film is adorable
This film was so much fun, the characters so lovable and quirky, I'll be adding it to my annual spooky season movie list (as a comedy, not so much horror). Also the quintessential Vermont vibes are VERY real. Watch in a double feature with White Christmas for the weirdest winter in Vermont movie pairing ever.
The Love Witch (2016)
a mood
Ahh this film is a MOOD. I know it's not something everyone would enjoy but for me it's aesthetic, kitschy perfection and I WANT MORE.
Who Killed Garrett Phillips? (2019)
misleading title, shoddy documentary
A documentarian should be skillful enough to allow us to hold two truths at the same time - the tragedy of a child's life lost, and the tragedy of a man's life destroyed by false allegations. This documentarian only seems capable of handling one truth at a time.
What happened to Nick Hillary is horrific. 5 stars for revealing the corruption we're all getting used to seeing from law enforcement in these types of cases as well as the covert racism prevalent in New England vs the overt racism often seen the American South.
Minus 5 stars for misleading me with a title like "Who Killed Garrett Phillips?" instead of "Who Framed Nick Hillary?" A CHILD was MURDERED, and not only does it seem like his own mother and town would rather see a conviction than hold the ACTUAL PERPETRATOR responsible, but it doesn't really seem like the documentarian cares who killed Garrett Phillips either. What I'd love to see is an investigative doc into WHO ACTUALLY KILLED GARRETT PHILLIPS. You know, or maybe an interview with actual family members? Or his lil friends? Or his teachers? Or his coaches? Maybe some home videos of Garrett Phillips while he was alive, so that that viewers really feel the impact of his death?
Unspeakable (2017)
Surprisingly good
I started this because the plot sounded Lifetime-y and I thought it would be a good hate-watch, like to drink and laugh at, probably like 4 out of 10 stars, but it actually ended up being decently well-written and even better acted. Indira is fantastic. So I'll have to find something else to hate-watch, I guess.
I May Destroy You (2020)
consent required
Complex, witty exploration of the meaning of consent and what it looks like (or doesn't look like) in realistic situations with imperfect but lovable humans. Like literature, you've got to watch more than a few episodes (i.e. Read more than a few chapters) to experience the character arcs and really comprehend the story at all. Because consent is a, if not THE, major theme woven throughout the series, some may find it by nature uncomfortable and chaotic at times (you know, much like life). And, it is not devoid of comedy, because HELLO Michaela Coel.
Dirty John (2018)
Well-done, funny, layered, and important!
Great storytelling, writing, acting... layered, realistic characters... and both seasons bring much-needed attention to covert narcissism in a darkly comedic way. Love it.
