Galavant (2015)
Fantastic
I don't think it is possible not to like this show. It is so funny and smart. For an 8 episode miniseries with only 20 minutes per episode, the character development and large plot seem to come out on top. I can't believe how involved I got in this show! I was waiting out each week for the new episodes! I downloaded it initially just to see because let's face it, the trailer looked dodgy, but after the second episode I was dying to know more. Of course when you have a pile of musical geniuses banding together to create, well, anything, it's going to be good. There are so many tiny witty comments and quirks to watch out for in Galavant that you're attention is occupied the entire time and it's very tongue in cheek humour as well. The King (also the initial villain) is the best developed character and you'll fall in love with him immediately, just because he's so dim-witted and naive. Galavant himself is so self obsessed (something of a Flynn Rider.. if you're a Disney fan) that you have to love him for just ignoring and undermining everyone else. All of the supporting characters are so entertaining as well, like Sid, his squire and Isabella, the princess helping him on his quest. There is a lot of singing though so if you don't like that sort of stuff, maybe just don't watch it. However if you do like musicals and love Disney style humour and fun as well as gorgeous fantasy films like The Princess Bride, then you'll love this.
The Interview (2014)
Excellent but dangerous
Okay, I'm going to go into this deeply, read everyone else's reviews for the entire low down on the film, such as how good the graphics are.
So The Interview was insanely hilarious. I'm a huge movie lover and fan of Seth Rogen so naturally I saw this ASAP. It has the humour of Pineapple express and Bad Neighbours but, despite being insanely unrealistic, this one seems to be less silly in its humour and more just exaggerated on every scale all at the same time as being scarily truthful.
We all know that this film has been aimed at NK and bases its story around taking down the 'Supreme Leader' Kim Jong-Un. It makes no attempt at tip toeing around facts. As some people have said, it is basically American Propaganda and The Interview spends it's entire 112 minutes undermining NK's leader in every way possible. Now, take for instance, movies about Hitler. They are, even now, decades after WWII, taken seriously. And some people get offended about them for whatever reason, racism, Nazism whatever, because of how sensitive the topic is.
Now, this film is about a live leader who is insanely dangerous. Who has control of 24.9 million people. It's based right now, this year. It's showing American's to be pretty stupid and shallow. It's making the NK's look even more horrible and it mocks them over and over again, angering them. Like poking a rabid dog, waiting for it to snap. Seth Rogen has created the most insensitive film I have ever seen, and showered it in delicious comedy so we get distracted from the impending horror of NK's threat to the world.
It absolutely makes you think. It is more than a comedy. If the ridiculous jokes were taken out of this film, it would be so heavy and something that would keep you awake at night. They take every opportunity to make the Kim look a mad man, weak and with an obsession for power. And maybe he is. BUT it is not good to anger someone like that. Everyone s joking around, but when a bomb is dropped of WWIII starts, we'll be cowering in corners because this leader is just another Hitler, another Stalin. Another man who hates everything about what we as westerners live for.
As a film and just a film, it was fabulous, hilarious, clever and sharp. I enjoyed it immensely, but I think people should be aware of what lies under it while they watch it. Because these messages impact everyone, rather than taking it lightly, it should be seen as an incredibly clever piece of propaganda.
I've given it a 9/10 because it gives food for thought. But not 10/10 because I think it was a dangerous move to have it include the NK names, as it will only provoke aggression.
I'm sorry if there are lots of typos, it's late.
Barbie and the Secret Door (2014)
Better than the last few
To begin, I am a Barbie lover, I collect barbies, I have all the movies and am just a huge fan. However, since Barbie in Thumbelina, the films have lacked their original element of magic. The characters are no longer dynamic, and every film with the exception of the Three Muskateers has been set in the present with no real magical otherworldly elements except for going under the sea for tacky underwater cities or into fairy lands that lack any kind of creativity in landscape and visual design. The exceptions since Thumbelina have been Muskateers, Princess Charm School and a Fashion Fairytale.
There have been seven movies since Charm School, and they have finally made another decent one. It still doesn't come close to Swan Lake/Rapunzel/Fairytopia/Pegasus etc, but it is on an equal level with Charm School. The colours are bright and the land beyond the door has more detail than the ones in Fairy Secret, which I really appreciate, because whoever designed the fairy world in that was absolutely useless.
The first two songs sung by Barbie 'Alexa' (I swear they're running out of names, haven't they used Alexa before?) are very catchy, despite they lyrics being lazy. However, the songs sung by her mermaid and fairy friends are really boring and the dancing is so awkward you want to block your eyes.
The villain is awesome though! I found her really funny, she's a little brat who is totally spoilt and her song gives us a good look at her character and develops our love/hate relationship with her. I was really happy with her, considering the last few villains which have been really boring and haven't had any musical numbers in a while.
Another plus is that Barbie doesn't look like such an alien in this one! I remember seeing her in 'A Mermaid Tale' and almost died from how giant her eyes were and how rounded and large her head was. Well it's still huge and her eyes are still giant, but she looks less crazy. She's definitely a bit more human looking than she was. Hopefully returning to her original movie looks.
My niece who is 9 really loved this film and she agrees with me about the last few being disappointments. She found this one really entertaining and funny, and loved the colours in the film! I personally felt the extreme lolly colouring to be a bit much, and almost got a headache from the overkill, but she loved it so I guess that's something the kids must like.
It has good messages in it as well, about being who you are and learning that you can shine even if you are shy and that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. It has all the typical barbie movie motivational messages in it, so that's always good.
Definitely worth watching, it gives hope that Barbie movies might be getting better again.
