Thirteen Lives (2022)
Pales compared to The Rescue by NatGeo
Hollywood letdown. Choppy skits. No character development, no storyline, no follow-through. Boring. The entire movie just had characters magically show up at the cave then go diving. They share two or three sentences then swim some more. Not surprised, because it's tough to follow the great 2021 NatGeo doc, The Rescue.
This was a missed opportunity by Ron Howard and company. No behind scenes military discussions or strategic planning. No back stories on how families discovered or how they endured over two weeks of the unknown. Instead, we get one mother with wide eyes and one father who can't thank the authorities enough. The screenplay was childish and cliché.
The true life story was intense and followed by the entire world. This movie had no build up, nothing gripping, and no grand ending. What about the 13 lives? All we got was one kid and a birthday cake. What about the collaboration between and across countries? This movie gave us nothing. No one cares about who ate the cookies.
I'm giving this two stars just for the somewhat good acting from Farrell, Mortensen, and Edgerton. Too bad the production was epically poor.
Virgin River (2019)
Formulaic, predictable, lazy writing
All characters use the exact same canned lines like, "I'll be right here. I'm not going anywhere." No individual quirks or unique personalities. Just a lot of broken people with secrets and deflated spirits. Stereotypical small town concept of nosy and gossipy self-important nobodies disguised as good intentioned thoughtful friends. Oh puh-leeze.
This was an easy show to watch and have as background noise. If watching, it helps to zip pass the many slow scenes. For instance, Mel's dating scenes: picnic by the lake, batting practice, dinner on the water, dance mingle, crying while driving, saying good night, etc. Ok, they like each other; we got it the first time.
I hate the production style of repeatedly showing us flashbacks and nightmares. Once is enough. Plus, was it really necessary to waste time by dragging out the "big reveal" labelled as unexpected, when viewers already knew how it would end? And what's with the town mayor's crusty personality and running around like a chicken without a head?? She constantly pushed and alienated everyone and yet everyone still coddled her poor behavior and adored her. Martyrdom rules.
Overall, this may be a show for those who love the books, but for the rest of us, it was boring and repetitive again and again, from episode to episode.
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
Miscast
Lea Thompson as popular and sexy? Eric Stolz as plain and unnoticeable?? What upside down world is this? Plus the tomboy so-called best friend just insults him again and again. Poor writing and stupid forced acting. The only thing going for this movie is the soundtrack.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Casting, writing, directing: mistake
Han Solo use to be short and stupid? Com'on! Woody Harrelson... overused. Campy dialogue and lame action. I fell asleep after 20 minutes. Paid extra to see it in IMAX... a big waste of money. I demand a refund. Shame on Disney for stealing my money and time. This is not a Star Wars movie.
Colony (2016)
Boring!
Cliché characters. Uninteresting dialogue. Who cares about this family? No one. Pilot divulges nothing, so why continue to watch a series of boring scenes? Selfish people who only care about themselves at the expense of others; and that's coming from this family. It's unimaginative and implausible to colonize a U.S. city. Com'on, don't insult our intelligence.
Also, I read the other reviews about the lead female character and I agree. I think it has a lot to do with the actress. Her acting is very limited and I dislike her work.
This is a waste of viewers' time, so spare yourself from this dull experience.
