Split (2016)
Tense Movie Well Acted!
First off I really enjoyed this movie. James McAvoy was amazing at best. Cycling through several of his inner personalities he was funny and downright terrifying. The tense scenes were with the psychiatrist as she probed Kevin to see what personality was currently in the light. Anya Taylor –Joy was a perfect casting. She portrayed her damaged character very well. Her back story was very troubling and important to the story. As for the other 2 girls they had very little parts and did some dumb stuff to get the tension going. When Kevin is finally consumed by the final personality (The Beast) he gains super human strength. It is explained that people with several personalities may have different needs or abilities depending on which personality is currently active at the time. One personality needed insulin when the host did not. Not sure if this is factually true or just movie fluff. Once Kevin turns beast mode the movie turns more into a horror film. I didn't mind the switch up because the movie needed to peak at that point. After Kevin kills the others, he corners Casey in a cage and realizes that they are both damaged by past childhood events and spares her life. You notice on Casey's body she has permanent scars from child abuse. Kevin was beaten with a wire hanger as a child. Very deep, dark and sad. Once Casey is found the movie revels that she was captive underneath the Tiger cages at the Zoo. Seems Kevin absorbed his last personality from the tigers. As for the so called twist that everyone has their panties in a bunch, It just a reference to unbreakable not a twist! You see Bruce Willis in a diner answering a question about a name the news station gave to a person. "Glass" was the answer. It was an Unbreakable reference. Not a twist! Kevin is not found which opens up for another movie. I would give this movie a solid 8.
Rogue One (2016)
Meh!
Seen the movie on opening night and had great expectations from all the reviews! The Bad- The movie took too long to get moving, I did like the casting of the main girl, she seemed natural in acting and likable, as for the other characters very forgettable. Forest Whitaker was absolutely horrible in this movie, very brutal to watch him act. Comic relief was the new robot which made the movie somewhat enjoyable. A Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher CGI replacement looked very bad! I would have liked to of seen a stand in or look a like. Peter resembled a video game! Most of the cool action scenes were in the trailer and not much more added. The Good- The 5 minutes of Darth Vader, new creatures, Familiar old faces, AT AT beach battle and the tie in to A New Hope 1977. Half to 3/4 of this film was very dry and slightly boring. The space battle was very predictable and seen before. They did a good job on the retro costume design and technology. For me this is a one time watch. The charm, humor and magic is not here. I believe a lot of people expected this formula. Even though this story is meant to be a downer and everyone dies at the end, there should still be something good to take away with this film but there's not. Even the Empire Strikes Back was a downer as but it sure had a big impact on you, Rogue One doesn't. I watched a New Hope last night to see how well the 2 tied into each other, the space scenes were believable but the Empires mountainous locations and Vaders castle did not seem to work for me in the Star Wars universe. Maybe because its never been seen or mentioned in prior movies. If mention in the books or comics I wouldn't know. This would be my honest review being a life long Star Wars fan! Didn't love and didn't hate it!
The Boss (2016)
Movie was Good!
Saw it last night and didn't expect too much from all the bad reviews. Found myself laughing a lot. This is one of her best movies. Glad it was R rated and raunchy! This is a comedy not an academy award winner! Ton of funny scenes! The fight scene between the two girl scout troops was great. Plot worked simple and made the movie a fun ride. Most comedies get panned by critics. little Peter D was great as usual! People are a little to hard on this movie, There's been a lot worse, a lot worse! Mellissa is a funny lady and I enjoy her timing and her physical comedy. Chicago was a great city for this movie to be based on.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Season 3 FAIL!
Tell me this series isn't "jumping the shark" already! BORING!!! I loved the first 2 seasons, but I'm forcing myself to finish season 3. Did the writers give up? Main characters are gone, plot lines are non-existent and stupid! What happened and who said wow this season 3 is good stuff? It's like a 15 year old kid wrote this season. This season was pushed out without any heart behind it! A COMPLETE Disappointment!!! Writers re-watch season 1-2 and learn from your mistakes! What a waste of a season! You better hope it doesn't get canceled because of this pile of dung! All these great actors and actress and this is all you can come up with! Panty sniffing business and a dirty book by Crazy Eyes! Lame! There is nothing compelling about any of these story lines! Get a handle on this for season 4! You owe the fans big time!!!
It Follows (2014)
Meh! Honest review by a horror fan!
It seemed that this movie had potential to be good, but fell short! Acting was good by the cast, but the film never explained the origin of the curse. In the opening scene we see a girl confused and frantically running in pump heels. She ends up dead at the beach with her limbs broken. The movie looked like it had potential! The main girl beds down with a boy she met and he passes the curse to our lead star. The rest of the film is this girl being chased by sometimes naked and very un-scary pursuers. The movie is plagued by the typical pitfalls, 1.Lead actress never explains to her friends what is happening. 2. She runs off by herself in dark areas. 3. Her guy friends know that she's cursed, but still want to tap her cursed vajayjay! 4. All her friends know that evil is out to get her, but can sleep together in the same room. The film tries it hand at CGI and falls flat on its face! The effects look bad! In the final scene the friends set up a swimming pool with several appliances setup around its perimeter. Hmmmm, wonder where they found all those extension cords and toasters? Anyway, the plan was to lure the evil follower into the pool and zap it like a bug! Finally, the worst move a movie could make.... an incomplete cliché drop to the ending credits. I felt ripped off! Can't film makers do better than that? Its just the easy way out and very non-original! I saw there were several reviews stating that this was an original story! I can count several other films with the same plot! I believe that a lot of these reviews are from people who had a direct connection in the making or funding of this film. I get it, it's business! I have to admit the movie had me hooked, I probably wouldn't of been so bitter if they didn't give up on the ending and stayed with practical effects! Instead the post production crew used an Ipad app to create the CGI. I love horror films, just hope the sequel is better! Pros, the actors were good, the background music was right on! John Carpenter all the way. Not sure if it was meant to be(budget), but hats off! younger readers might not get the Carpenter thing!
Sader Ridge (2013)
Mixed Bag! Help me understand the ending!
We just watched the film and enjoyed up until the ending. We know Sam and Eric are brother and sister and were abused as kids. Questions: Who killed the family, Why did the police have pictures of the friends that show them at a younger age, and why were bro and sis kissing at the end. I want to like this movie but, it seemed that the end was rushed and not thought out well enough. The viewer couldn't understand the conclusion. Can someone elaborate on the ending! As for the rest of the movie the acting was just OK. The area was spooky and fit the atmosphere. I like movies on a small budget because it gives the feeling of reality. Big budget films have a polished look to them, which doesn't work well with horror films. I grew up on Halloween, Prom Night, Carrie, Phantasm, and many more. Younger people might not get this idea. Horror film buffs will.
