Kaathal - The Core (2023)
A well performed portrayal of revelation and pain and love
I've never been a Mammootty fan, and the superstar antics of these actors often puts me off. But I was very impressed by his performance in the Malayalam movie Kaathal - The Core (kaatal - essence, core, inner essence). The movie has an equally good performance by Jyotika, and together they do a good job of portraying the roles of Omana and Mathew. A difficult story of coming out of the closet*, and the decoding of pain. Performances of some of the other characters needed some refinement, but that doesn't take much away from this being a good movie. Mammotty has portrayed the person and emotions of the character Mathew in a very natural (and non superstar like) and non-assuming manner.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Absurdism well played out
Might as well have been Nothing Nowhere Sporadically. If you can tune yourself to absurdism, this movie is a great watch. Michelle Yeoh Choo Kheng plays that role exceptionally well in that role in a way that is absurd, funny, and down to earth at the same time. The bagel, however, was way too absurd for me. The role of Joy Wang could have been better portrayed, while Ke Huy Quan gives a very decent supporting performance. The combination of multiple roles and capabilities of the main character, and the swift switch between those roles, sometimes with absurd overlaps, makes this a worthwhile watch even if absurdism doesn't interest you.
#Home (2021)
Terribly boring
The only good thing I could find in this movie is a decent performance by Manju Pillai in her limited role. Otherwise a totally lackluster movie.
Thondimuthalum Dhriksakshiyum (2017)
Simple yet profoundly intriguing
Simple yet profoundly intriguing move. Leaves you with that same intriguing feeling at the end of the movie. Naturally acted.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
One heck of a performance by Rami Malek as Freddie
I've hardly ever listened to rock music, let alone specifically to Queen . Freddie Mercury being a celebrity, I've read about him in the news and know a few of his numbers just by the titles and probably heard parts of his songs in the background. But come November 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody which was released this week shows an Egyptian American actor Rami Malek in a brilliant performance as the buck toothed Parsi boy Farrokh Bulsara who transforms into the superstar Freddie Mercury. One of the best (biographic) musicals I've ever seen. Not to be missed.
Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)
A Winnie the Pooh story that will make you cry. And you'll love it
I have been a fan of the simple, good, fun-loving Winnie the Pooh, the gloomy Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet, Christopher Robin, and all the others in A A Milne's adventure, in books and movies for almost a lifetime now. This is a wonderful depiction of the story behind the creation of perhaps the all time best children's stories ever. A touching story that reflects on what life is, and if you've been a fan of Pooh stories, story that will make you cry, well directed and beautifully presented. This is not your usual Winnie the Pooh movie (and perhaps a welcome break from the Disney style). Spun around just a few characters, the movie's visuals drift you into beautiful English country side. Whether you're Eeyore or Tigger, or just plain Pooh, I don't see why you wouldn't watch Goodbye Christopher Robin.
Christopher Robin (2018)
Good to to see Pooh and company again
A very nice movie that will make you feel real good about meeting Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, and the the rest of the Hundred Acre Wood again. A must must watch if you're a fan.
