Så var det jul igjen (2023)
It gets the stars as Norway gets honest about it's implicit racism
First, if rural Norwegians are so hung-up on their tradition, Thea should have told Jashan about it.
Second, what kind of person does not tell her family the full name of the person they are bringing for Christmas. It was another matter if Jashan actually went by Josh. But, Thea calls him Jashan. So, why is her anglicizing his name. Is that so that her mom don't freak out.
Third, who the hell calls Jashan as Shazam even after being corrected more than twice. It is incredibly racist. That is fine as there are racist people in Norway. But, then Jashan should have gotten angry much before getting drunk.
Fourth, why would Jashan be wearing Indian clothes on Christmas Eve. And if he does not know, why did Thea not tell him about it.
Fifth, what is this movie. Is it a family drama meaning to show that Norwegians (at least outside Oslo) are incredibly racist. This movie is by no means a romantic comedy as there is hardly any romance and definitely no comedy. The movie is actually very serious. And suddenly, all of a sudden, Thea's mom does a U-turn. In any case, Thea is an incredibly despicable character (and maybe that is why she did her acting well as such).
Last, why the heck did Thea not have Jashan's back. I would not tolerate this to someone who is a complete stranger, and she allows her mom to be extremely rude for days on end. And if Thea is so rude, why did Jashan not get mad at her for more than 3 days.
Niagara Falls (1941)
Extremely hilarious
I have been watching lot of 30s and 40s classics. I came across this and this was so much fun. If you are ok with appreciating the values more than 8 decades ago, I think this is so much fun as a screwball comedy of errors.
This was a laugh riot from start to finish. All the characters- the young "couple", the old couple and the hotel manager were all very funny.
Too many people are bothered that this doesn't seem to be shot in Niagara Falls. I don't know if people were expecting this as a romantic movie based in the Niagara Falls. This is just a sweet and funny comedy. Best 40 minutes of my time spent.
Attack of the Hollywood Clichés! (2021)
It was above average till it decided to shame
First, it is less than an hr so it is very basic. It was expected and that is fine. Second, I don't understand (I speak as a person of color) why everything has to be seen through the lens and prism of color. It is also very insulting to those actors of color who took on these roles to say they were not invested in those roles but did it to pay the bills. This is what makes me extremely disrespected. Third, even with women wearing heels in fight scenes, yes it is absurd but these women chose to do these scenes. They also included women who were already established in their careers. It was their own choice to do these cliches. Finally, as someone who is Asian American, I find it interesting that these guys focused only on negative cliches about African Americans and not on Asian Americans. Asian Americans are 7% of the American population but they are not only underrepresented but also misrepresented.
I have no problem with making fun of these cliches. In fact, this is why I decided to watch it. But, I don't think this has to be a "Church of Netflix" sermon.
Doctor G (2022)
Decent movie - sometimes finds difficulty in balancing comedy with drama
This is a dramedy - in fact it is primarily a drama with some lighter moments. It is much more serious than some other serious issues Khurana has tackled in most of his other comedies. The director is confused whether to treat it as a comedy or a drama and it is essentially a drama after the first third of the movie.
Khurana has become formulaic in that he acts as the protagonist in a social issue movie which has some light hearted moments.
This could have been a comedy-drama like Ted Lasso which makes you smile and also swell up. But, the movie misses its potential by making the storyline too complicated.
83 (2021)
A movie that moves you
I was bit skeptic after the trailer. It seemed bit cheesy. I had liked the teaser. I watched it on New Year's Eve - first movie since COVID started. I am not someone who cries often in movies but the movie was well-made and brought back memories of my childhood. People who are born in 80s would remember how people used to go to other people's homes to watch a match. People who watch cricket today will not understand how cricket matches used to be in the 90s. People used to pray and not move from their seats even on TV. Yes, some parts may seem sappy but overall this movie would make most cricket lovers swell with emotion.
