American Horror Stories: Necro (2022)
Necro is the title, so...
Only four reviews so far as I write mine. Looks like you either hate this episide or really enjoyed it. I was happily freaked out by it and think it was the best episode of the season. Better, even, than Dollhouse because of the unique, bordering on taboo subject matter. Get over the necro part. Hello, this is a horror show!
The rest of the story plays on feelings we all have in dark times; alone, rejected, like a freak (for whatever reason), like no one will ever understand. In the end this episode is an old fashion romance with grande gestures (sans a boombox). I thought it was fun! Eh, the wedding scene was a little over the top, but all in all I say great story.
Girl (2020)
Better Than Given Credit
I don't often watch a movie without checking the IMDB rating first, but on a whim I did. I was really surprised to come here after and see it scored so low! It was a good story with good acting. I was surprised at who the brothers are, her mom was predictable. There're at least three cool fight scenes that I won't go into detail so as not to spoil anything. It's at least worth the time to give it a once over. I'll probably watch it again in a few years when I stumble on it again.
The Equalizer (2021)
Queen Latifah as The Equalizer? YES, more please!!
I didn't know Queen Latifah as The Equalizer was in the works and stumbled upon it in the CBS All Access app. I loved every minute and everything about the first episode! As far as strong females go, I think Queen Latifah was the perfect choice for the lead role. I'm a fan of the previous versions, and this reboot is just as entertaining, satisfying, and exciting. We all know what The Equalizer is about, so the actors, individual stories, and how they're presented is what makes this new series fun.
I don't understand the negative reviews. A lot of woman bashing and weight shaming that has nothing to do with the actual acting, directing, etc. It's disappointing, but not surprising, there's a lot of men who are uncomfortable with a strong black woman in a lead role and they gotta let everyone know about it from behind their screens.
Cheers to the rest of us who know a good series when we see it!
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Great Suspenseful Sci-fi Movie!
I don't understand why this movie has so many poor reviews. I thought it had the best of both worlds - apocalypse down on Earth & mission up in space. The acting was excellent, the story suspenseful, and the cinematography was beautiful. I've seen the other science fiction movies to which it's being compared, and strongly disagree that The Midnight Sky took elements from those stories. It's ultimately a story of survival, and that's what most science fiction movies are about. If you like your science fiction with a lot of guns, you're not going to like this movie. But if you liked the Martian and Interstellar, then you should like this movie as well. I saw one person compare it to Ad Astra which, in my opinion, was a drama about a guy with daddy issues which just happened to take place in space. I literally dozed off in the movie theater during Ad Astra. On the other hand The Midnight Sky at times literally had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the suspense. This movie definitely goes on the list of movies I'll watch again.
Ad Astra (2019)
Daddy Issues
I was so excited for this film, then so disappointed when I saw it. This is not a space sci fi movie. This is a drama about a guy with daddy issues, and the story just happens to take place in space. There were a few good scenes, but they were few and far between, and the narrative was boring.
Wine Country (2019)
Lighten Up
I'm glad I decided to watch this movie. Sure it's not Oscar material, but how many comedies are? It's simply a movie about a group of middle age female friends getting together to reconnect, drink, and have fun. Along the way they reveal personal truths they couldn't face alone, so they face them together. If you can relate to the characters, you'll like this movie. If you can't relate, there's always Power Rangers or Pokemon for you.
Under the Skin (2013)
Read the Book
Unless you've read the book, or at least a synopsis of it, there's no understanding that SJ is an alien until the ending. Even though the movie doesn't really follow the book you at least have answers to the questions: Who is she? Why did she take that woman's clothes? Why does she often look so confused? Why is she leading men into a black void? What happened to the guy in suspension when he popped out of his skin? What's the river of red and black flowing towards the red line in the void? Who's the guy on the motorcycle?
I understand they wanted to strip the story down, but I think they went too far and stripped away too much of the actual plot. I like mind benders, but there still has to be a comprehensive story that allows the viewers to connect the dots along the way or at the end have an "a ha!" moment. If you have no knowledge of the book, the ending only reveals SJ is an alien, which is why she seems lost or confused by the world around her, and the men were taken for some alien reason. No other answers. That's it.
