Leo (2023)
An engaging roller coaster ride, if you don't care about the logic.
Disclaimer: This review is purely my point of view. My opinion may differ from yours. This review may contain very mild spoilers.
Positives:
1. Thalapathy Vijay: It's really glad to see Vijay in a classy performance along with mass moments that really worked well.
2. SFX and VFX: Generally multi-starrer movies lack vfx and technical aspects. But it has better visuals (Especially the Hyena fight) and even better sound mixing.
3. Action choreography: Cafe fight is the best choreographed fight in recent times with the edge of seat moments. Single shot fight in the second half really surprised me how it was choreographed.
4. Cinematography: Camera work in fight scenes are of a whole different level especially in that single shot fight.
5. Thoroughly engaging first half: The first half of this movie is staged perfectly and one of the best staging in the recent days.
6. LCU connect (Will work if you don't have too much expectations)
7. Chemistry between Trisha and Vijay: Generally, in Lokesh's film or Vijay's film, female lead will not be given much role. But, Trisha was used well in this film and still those scenes are really relevant to the content. We all know that controversial scene, you guys just watch Vijay and Trisha's performance in that scene. That was completely justified (Please don't come and fight with me for justifying usage of bad words in that scene and again it's my point of view)
8. All the other supporting actors' performance.
9. Post climax connect: I won't spoil it for you guys.
10. Interval block at high point.
11. Leo's flashback: Here my point of view might be different from yours and it's completely ok. People can be sometimes superstitious (Not spoiling much) and do foolish things. If you take it in that sense, then flashback works for you.
Negatives:
1. Second half: I won't completely call second half as negative. Second half was still good and engaging, but not so engaging as first half. (Again my point of view)
2. Sanjay Dutt and Arjun was underutilised: Generally, Lokesh's USP is strong villain. But, in this, writing of villain characters was weak when compared to other Lokesh's films. But Arjun and Sanjay Dutt's performance was great. Just that writing didn't work for me.
3. Vijay's character arc: Vijay's character change was not justified properly. More time could have been spent on this part.
4. Don't expect it like Vikram: Vikram's screenplay had many surprises like Agent Tina, Rolex etc., But there isn't a much surprises that u can expect in this one. This is why Lokesh didn't want us to over expect anything to be LCU in his interviews. If you see it as a standalone film, it really works. I didn't have so much expectations, so it worked for me.
5. One against 500: This is not really a negative. If you want this movie to be perfectly logical, sorry this movie is not for you. No one is perfect.
Overall, this film works really well, if you don't keep too much expectations.
My rating: 4/5.
Varisu (2023)
The movie may work out, if you watch it without any expectations.
Positives:
1. VIJAY: Thalapathy Vijay's screen presence is as usual enjoyable in this movie. Both in comedy and emotional scenes, Vijay sir scored well. Thalapathy Vijay still looks young today.
2. SONGS AND DANCE: Thaman's songs worked well in this movie. Vijay sir's dance really explains how dedicated he is towards the making.
3. ONE OR TWO EMOTIONAL MOMENTS: Luckily, emotional scenes didn't feel irritating and it will satisfy the family audience.
4. NOT FELT BORED: This movie surely will hold you for its entire runtime of around 2 hrs and 50 mins without feeling bored despite its emotional and family moments.
5. COMIC TIMING OF VIJAY AND YOGI BABU: Generally, I'm not much of a fan of Yogi Babu and I felt most of his jokes cringe. But surprisingly Yogi Babu mocking Thalapathy and vice Versa worked well.
6. ACTION BLOCKS: Ignoring the logic, the action blocks really worked well and are enjoyable.
7. SJ SURYA'S CAMEO: SJ SURYA'S cameo (which I can't reveal much) worked well and it's enjoyable.
NEGATIVES:
1. LAZY WRITING: This movie falls flat in the writing point. There is no new scene in the movie. We have seen all the scenes in some movies. The scenes are either inspired or copied from old movies.
2. WEAK SCREENPLAY: Ofcourse, we shouldn't expect anything in the family movies. But all the scenes are extremely predictable. Sometimes even dialogues are predictable.
3. LACK OF EMOTIONAL CONNECT IN MANY SCENES: Since this movie explicitly deals with the problems involved in rich family, many scenes cannot be connected emotionally by the general audience and weak direction is also another reason why we cannot connect some emotional scenes.
4. WEAK CHARACTERIZATION: Except Vijay, Sarath Kumar and Jaya Sudha's character, no character was written properly. Prakash Raj's role as a villain was completely wasted.
5. EDITING AND CG: Some scenes are easily identifiable that they were taken by using green mat. Could have concentrated well on this part. But making and set design were good.
6. SOME ARTIFICIALLY ADDED MOMENTS: Emotional scenes involving Srikanth, his wife and his daughter just felt like a scene made to change Srikanth as a good person. But dialogue (Dealing with lack of affection towards the kid) in that scenes worked well.
7. ONLY UPS AND NO DOWNS: Vijay is dealing all the problems easily and so there is no thrill in watching any of it, as we know that he will deal all the problems easily.
Overall, this film works well for a family audience and may or may not work for general audience. Watch it without keeping any expectations and it might work.
My rating: 6/10.
Thunivu (2023)
Mastered commercial knowledge but failed in physics
Positives:
1. AJITH: Ajith sir's screen presence and his body language really hold the movie until the end.
2. Engaging first half and the interval block: Movie started off well and the gripping nature in first half never made us feel that there is any lack in logic despite some illogical sequences.
3. All actors did justice to their roles. Special mentions: Samuthirakani, Mohana Sundaram, Manju Warrier and Mahanathi Shankar.
4. Subject chosen by the movie and the message: Various scams involved in banking and stock market (can't reveal much as it becomes spoiler) researched well and must be known by everyone. The message given by this movie has been delivered well and special kudos to H Vinoth for executing the same.
5. Comical tone of thala Ajith throughout the film: The serious subject has been dealt comically throughout the movie in order to reach the audience commercially and succeeded in the effort.
6. Some twists and turns: I don't want to spoil your experience. Watch it and find it yourself.
Negatives:
1. Some portions in second half: As the second half deals with the motive for engaging in heist, motive felt little unconnected in my opinion. But still it's just my opinion, maybe it would be good for others.
3. RIP logic and physics: As I said earlier in positive, first half didn't feel illogical because of the engaging tone even though some scenes are illogical. Even though second half has some entertaining and informative sequences , many scenes are illogical. We sense such illogical scenes, as cinematic liberty have been taken and the limits have been crossed especially in the climax sequence.
4. VFX and editing issues. But not hampering the the screenplay of the movie.
Overall, a decent watch which must be watched by everyone for its message.
My rating: 6.5/10.
Kaithi (2019)
A completely packed action thriller with the emotions at the right place.
It's surely one of the best movies of 2k19.
Story: The police officer seeks the help of a Prisoner to safeguard the drugged police force from the Drug Mafia. This storyline is new to the Tamil cinema and the entire movie runs in a night.
Acting: Karthi's acting is lit and it's natural as a real prisoner. The role of Narain and every other supporting actors are well made.
Action and stunts: Action scenes are well framed. Each and every fights are engaging and has its moments.
Cinematography: Cinematography is awesome, eventhough the entire movie is set in night time. Camera work was well made.
Screenplay:There is no lag anywhere. The screenplay is too intense and perfectly matched with the storyline.
Direction: Direction part is well made. The emotion shared between Karthi and his daughter is awesome. It can bring us tears at the last scene.
Overall, it is an intense movie with a unique storyline you can enjoy this diwali.
My rating:4.5/5
Chhichhore (2019)
A mixture of good elements from 3 Idiots and Students of the year 1.
Story: A movie with a critical message that either you win or lose, life can't be replaced by anything. This message has been conveyed in an engaging and enjoyable manner.
Screenplay: This movie gives the nostalgic feel about college life. Screenplay does engage well in its first half. But got little slow in its second half, it's because the message should be effectively conveyed. However the message is effectively conveyed.
Music: Background score by Pritam was good. But, out of 3 songs, 2 songs are good. Background music helped a lot to make us involved with the movie.
Acting: It's definitely the best movie in the career of Sushant Singh Rajput and the best movie of Shraddha Kapoor after Aashiqui 2 and ek villain. Their acting is absolutely awesome and make us connect with the movie emotionally. Varun Sharma as usual made us laugh with his one liners. Prateik Babbar though underutilized, done his part well. Other casts have also performed well.
Dialogues: The best part of the movie, which makes us emotional was its dialogues. Though old, the dialogues are awesome.
Overall, a nostalgic film that can't be any better.
*My Rating: 4.5/5*
Nerkonda Paarvai (2019)
A brilliant remake that did justice to its original
This is a much needed movie for the prevailing society. Ajith not only delivers the message, but also gave the best ever acting that makes us emotional.
Story: The movie has delivered the best point that needed for this society (i.e) *No means No*
Acting: Ajith as usual did his best. Shraddha Shrinath also did the best job. The role of opposition Lawyer was great. All other casts also done the great Job.
Screenplay: Screenplay is engaging. Eventhough its runtime is almost 2 hrs 40 mins, we won't feel drag anywhere. But, Flashback involving Vidya Balan wasn't necessary for the storyline, though it's good.
Direction: Vinoth's direction is great like his previous movies (Theeran Adhigam and Sathuranga Vettai) and also makes us emotional.
Music: BGM was great and added emotions to the film. First song felt like a drag and noisy. All other songs are nice. Yuvan Shankar Raja again gave a good album forgiving the opening noisy song.
Other things: Other things like Cinematography, Editing, Actions and fight are great.
Overall, it's a great film which should be watched by everyone.
My Rating: 4.5/5
Kaatrin Mozhi (2018)
A wonderful feel good family drama with emotions and fun in the right place.
It's really an awesome phase in Tamil cinemas because of the movies like Pariyerum Perumal, 96, Ratsasan and Vada Chennai. Now Kaatrin Mozhi enters into this list.
It is a remake of the Hindi movie "Tumhari Sulu" starring Vidya Balan. Usually remake movies couldn't be a better one upto my knowledge. But this one was good like its original and, even better and emotional.
Story: It's really hard to deal with the subject of feminism. This movie had mastered it. This movie perfectly portrayed the cliched things which are still present in our society.
Screenplay: This movie don't even drag in a single moment. It's really hard to make these type of films with a faster screenplay. On the whole, you never feel that the movie is two and half hours. But some scenes are unnecessary especially Yogi Babu's cameo and even songs are unnecessary.
Direction: Direction is the hardest art and Radha Mohan(who Previously directed Mozhi, Abhiyum Naanum) is Picasso in it. As I said previously, the direction was awesome and perfect, which may fill your eyes with tears if you travel through the film. Comedies are awesome which makes you laugh over the first half. Second half made seriously and even it might fill your eyes with tears.
Acting: The most awesome part in this movie is natural acting of Jyothika. Vidharth as usual acted wonderfully. All supporting casts like Mayilsamy, M.S.Bhaskar, Manobala and others suited perfectly. Simbu's Cameo is short and sweet.
Dialogues: All the dialogues are well written and even it's one of the reasons for emotions. Simbu's dialogue may make you relate with your life.
Thus, Finally one of the finest movies in Tamil cinemas ever written with emotions and fun in the right place.
My rating: 4/5 and additional 0.5 for Jyothika's natural acting. Hence, finally 4.5/5
Ratsasan (2018)
The edge of seat thriller after a long time which is scarier than many horror movies.
The main advice for watching this film as said in Idharkkudhaane aasaipattai Balakumara "It should not be watched by 1) People less 18 of age
2) Pregnant ladies
3) Heart patients"
Though it's not a Horror film, the movie is scarier, especially second half.
Story: The movie started as a usual crime film, but tone became darker when the movie started to progress. The backstory of Psycho was good.
Screenplay: The screenplay in this movie is engaging and brilliant. First half seems to be normal. But, the true fear starts in its second half, though there are very few loopholes.
Music: The best one about the movie is its BGM. 80% of the fear is because of its BGM. The dark music which completely matched the film. Gibran again proved himself to be the best music director.
Acting: All actors did their best. This is the best movie ever for both Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul in terms of acting. All the other actors dedicated well.
Other things: The runtime in this movie is too long which is around 2 Hours and 50 minutes. But one doesn't feel that the movie is dragging, because of the engaging screenplay. Each and every scene in this movie is essential. Moreover, editing was crispier which added more thrill to the film.
On the whole, it would be a great movie if you watch it in theatre.
My rating: 4.5/5
96 (2018)
The fine line between imagination and reality beautifully portrayed.
I usually never rate 10/10, but this made me rate 10/10.
When we talk about beautiful love stories, the movies like Autograph, VTV, Raja Rani and Meesaiya Murukku come into our mind. Now, 96 entered into this list which beautifully portrayed the reality.
The direction by Prem Kumar is simply awesome, which will surely make the sensitive people cry( I'm one among them).
The screenplay in this movie might be slow, yet it makes you travel through your childhood memories and guarantee an excellent journey.
The story of this movie might be common, but the story itself portrays reality. Hence, it would be a great watch.
The songs and BGM in this movie are purely awesome, which makes you travel deeper into the film.
Cinematography plays a vital role in the beginning. It was purely great.
The acting part is the best one in this movie. Vijay Sethupathi's natural acting, and Trisha's different acting than ever, made us travel through the film.
Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018)
A great game that could have been perfect if it had been without loopholes.
It's really impossible to make a multi-starrer film with a small run time of 2 hours and 25 mins. Mani Ratnam was the Picasso in it. It's a great example for film making.
Direction: The scenes in this movie were too intense and direction was proportionate to it and was perfectly synced. But, Aishwarya Rajesh's scene of going to prison felt like an unnecessary one and doesn't create any emotions.
Story: The story in this movie was a perfect example for saying that Karma is Boomerang. The storyline though felt like an old one, the game became brilliant in the second half with a perfect climax.
Screenplay: The screenplay in the first half doesn't create a great impact, but the entry scenes of all the character was classy. The second half was great, but many questions left unanswered. But climax in it was one of the best climaxes ever had.
Acting: Arvind Swamy, classy as always did a great job in it. Arun Vijay, great with his work as always. We can surely say that this is the best movie in the career of Simbu and his acting and dialogues are just classy. Vijay Sethupathi, who scores the full marks with the great one liners and yet another classy performance after Vikram Vedha. All the female leads done a great job. But comparatively Jyothika had more screen space than any other actress.
Dialogues: All the dialogues were awesome especially of Arvind Swamy and proved it as a classy writing.
Music and BGM: This was really an interesting BGM which is suitable to the title of the film and the screenplay. The songs are very limited and suitable to the storyline
Acting:10/10
Direction:8/10
Screenplay:7/10
Storyline:8/10
Dialogues and one-liners: 8/10
Music and BGM: 8/10
Overall:8/10
Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018)
A good thriller which could have been even better.
The second consecutive movie this year with Nayanthara in the lead. She's good in selection of movie. This one is no exception. This could have been even better to be called as a gripping thriller.
Acting: All the lead characters had acted well. But the acting of Anurag Kashyap is exceptional. Vijay Sethupathi's Cameo is short and sweet and he's good as always. Atharva acted better in this one.
Positive points:
1. As I mentioned earlier, acting part was completely good.
2. This film is technically sound one.
3. Anurag Kashyap completely ruled the film by his exceptional acting.
4. Direction was good as it tried to make audience emotional.
5. Though the movie has a running time of 2 hrs and 50 mins, we never feel bored except for love portions.
Negative points:
1. Songs are unnecessary at the moments, eventhough songs are good.
2. Running time is 2 hrs and 50 mins. It could've been handled better by removing unnecessary scenes.
3. Some scenes are easily predictable. It could've been handled in a better way.
4. It lacks some logic. I don't want to put spoilers and spoil the experience of readers.
Considering all the negative points, this movie is surely a great treat for those who love thrillers.
My rating:6/10 and additional 1 for Anurag Kashyap. Hence 7/10
