The Equalizer: Pulse (2022)
The episode is exciting AND...
This episode is a lot heavier on the spy aspect of things (as opposed to the 'helping normal people' part) and I think this show does a good job of hanging back from focusing on spy mission stuff and focusing on helping normal people, which is supposed to be what it's about. That said, this is a pretty good 'spy stuff' episode with a scary supervillain and Robyn and Mel being badasses. Also I love that Chris Noth's character dies (off screen) in this one. I appreciated how quickly this show cut ties with him once the deluge of allegations (that were not at all surprising) came out. I would have preferred if his character was killed off as a traitor or something but I understand that this was better for the plot of the show, so... a win is a win.
Rabbit Hole (2023)
Great, as long as you're actually paying attention.
This was fantastic. It kept me guessing and not knowing what was in store or who to trust which I loved because it takes a lot for a show or movie to accomplish that with me. I also enjoyed the ways in which it forces you to pay attention because there is a lot of context that could be easily missed if you weren't doing so. It's also 100% interesting enough to hold and deserve that attention. The visuals used to show the protagonist's thought process as he was also trying to figure what was going on were really interesting and well done.
A lot of this series seems to be going over peoples heads either because they actually don't understand what's going on or because they just want *so badly* for this show to be 24 when it isn't, it was never supposed to be, and it absolutely stands on its own.
There are a lot of complaints in the reviews about this being unrealistic... literally any film or show ever made about a secret, globe-spanning conspiracy to destroy democracy is unrealistic. This show took a lot of those familiar themes, a lot of things that intelligence agencies have actually done in the past and added the extremely relevant topic of data privacy. Although issues of surveillance and data privacy have been aspects of similar works of fiction in the past, those have generally focused on things that things that could *might* be possible or could be issues in the future... the data privacy issues in Rabbit Hole are things that are actually happening right now that people aught to know more about.
The cast was awesome and Rob Yang was amazing, Homm was such a great character. I do wish that both Peter Weller and Lance Henriksen had been utilized more though.
Soft & Quiet (2022)
Who in the world was the target audience for this??
To start, I dislike the fact the the film's description and trailer skirt around the fact that it is very much about racism, the trailer obviously hints at it but gives clear indication of how heinous the characters and their actions are going to be. It's okay to surprise me with that being the theme of the entire movie but that's not okay to do to anyone who doesn't look like me.
I knew going in that it was going to be like enraging to watch (which I was fine with) but I naively thought that enraging storyline would lead to sort of payoff in the end, nope.
It starts with some good examination of the covert, manipulative, and insidious ways that 'harmless' seeming suburban white ladies uphold racism, it then shows how much more intense that can be behind closed doors around people with the same mindset. Then it just goes completely off the rails.
Usually a film like this would discuss these topics and then make an actual point or teach a lesson, fiction can be used to take real life scenarios that might go frustratingly unpunished and show what it would be like if there was some kind of justice or revenge or horrible people getting some kind of comeuppance... not in this film though! Every time it seems like an actual point is going to be made or it's going to teach some kind of lesson... the story just runs head first into to the point and just keeps going which is honestly really annoying.
The closest it gets to being the cautionary tale it seems like it's trying to be is by being like 'be careful if you're gonna be racist because you might end up doing something significantly more racist' which is an absolutely useless statement to use an entire film to make.
This movie is objectively bad and completely fails at anything it was trying to accomplish. It's hard to detail all of its failings without spoilers but I hope what I've said explains enough.
And seriously... Who is this movie even for?
Kaleidoscope: Pink: 6 Months After the Heist (2023)
What did I just watch? Also... Why??
I watched most of the show in chronological order... so this was last and It's not so much that I'm disappointed as it is that I'm extremely confused.
The tone of this episode was very different from the rest of the series... Jai Courtney is great at playing a caricature of a violent Aussie criminal but that didn't mean there needed to be an episode that was mostly just angry Captain Boomerang. This felt like the end of a Guy Ritchie movie but without any of the things that make Guy Ritchie movies work. They tried to keep the plot on the same track and have the same emotional depth as the rest of the series but did so in the weirdest way possible so a. It didn't keep that depth and b. It really just leaves the viewer like "Seriously? This is how it ends?"
At no point before this episode did I think I'd regret watching this show... I guess I still don't... but this episode belongs far away from the rest of the show.
NCIS: Hawai'i: Spies, Part 1 (2022)
Not Bad... looking forward to part 2
At first I thought this episode wasn't anything special but this show isn't actually that bad. There is just a lot of suspended disbelief required to watch anything in the NCIS universe. I liked the twist at the end. It wasn't massively surprising but it was interesting.
I think it was a really intentional choice to not have Beulah Koale show up as the same character from a cancelled show and to make it clear that he wasn't the same guy by having him not use a fake American accent and sound like himself to show that he has range and I really like his character. Alex Terrant must have had a hard time keeping up his own fake American accent in scenes with him.
Mindcage (2022)
I knew it would be bad but this is just next level
It's not just that its a rip-off of serial killer movies that are actually good... cheap imitation isn't the worst thing in the world.
From the beginning it was obvious that no one involved in this movie knew anything about police or the prison system but I convinced myself to ignore that and suspend my disbelief. I tried so hard to give this movie a chance to not be terrible.
There is a moment when it seems like things are pointing towards an ending that would have actually been interesting and explained some stuff... but that moment is fleeting and immediately after... this movie just decides to change genres. They could have done some spooky unexplained stuff without going full sci-fi but they didn't and I'm mad at this ending.
Who wrote that?? Who greenlit this crap?? I have so many questions.
NCIS: Los Angeles: A Fait Accompli (2021)
Average. However...
I'm used to this show having convoluted and ridiculous plot lines. It jumped the shark years ago. I know what I'm getting into when I watch it.
The issue I have is with the flashbacks. I understand that I would be very hard to find someone to play a younger Linda Hunt... but since it was a very short scene and they used her real voice anyway, they could have kept it in silhouette or any number of ways of showing her without showing her. Instead they went with terrifying, uncanny valley style, straight-up *bad* special effects and OMG WHY??
The Terminal List (2022)
Surprisingly mediocre
I love a revenge thriller. The cinematography was nice and I adore Constance Wu. Unfortunately this was just one of the most predictable things I've ever watched. It could have easily just been a movie without losing any important aspects. Frankly, if it was just a feature length film I would have been far less annoyed when the end payout was so mediocre and painfully predictable.
