Resurrected (2023)
Surprisingly well done
Ghost Pirate recommended this movie and mentioned it was filmed under what seemed like pandemic protocols, relying heavily on FaceTime, computers, and phone footage. Given the storyline, I was not sure they could pull it off under those constraints; but I honestly feel like they did. The use of FaceTime didn't seem forced, but rather like it was part of this heavily internet -reliant dystopian world where the film takes place. Was the movie perfect? No, but I think it did a great job. Some movies have great acting but poor script, great editing and terrible storyline, but this movie seems to be pretty solid on all metrics.
Cold Feet (2019)
Well worth watching
Yes, it starts a little slow and you may be tempted to click off, but you will be rewarded for sticking around. The actual storyline is quite good, which sets it a step above a 4 or 5 star horror. The comedy is cheeky and fun, rather than sight gags. The acting was a little uneven - less a cohesive whole than an array of people playing characters (but some of those characters... :::chef's kiss:::) Also, there were 8 main characters which is about 3 more than an audience can really keep track of in a buddy movie. Those are my only two "complaints", if you could even call them that. The story really took off in the second act and had me rethinking and re-evaluating all that had come before. Something I sincerely did not expect. I'm rarely surprised by a movie with so few ratings, but pleasantly surprised I am!
Into the Dark: Pilgrim (2019)
HIGHLY ENTERTAINING
This movie knows what it is, and it does it very well. It's not hide-under-the-covers horror or a psychological slow-burn, but rather a well-acted, campy B movie. The family dynamics are pretty darn good, right down to the eye-rolling teens and quippy dialogue. If you enjoy films like Cabin in the Woods and Dale and Tucker vs. the Evil, you'll probably enjoy this film. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither should you. Enjoy it for what it is !
The Go-Between (2015)
Beautifully tragic coming-of-age story
Turning 13 is never easy, but for Leo it's far more than his own burgeoning puberty that entangles him. His curiosity about the ways of love is confounded by his lack of father, so he turns to a young farmer on the estate where he is summering. His lower social status already makes him a fish out of water at the sprawling English estate, so the eldest daughter's attention and care for him is most welcomed. As the story progresses, his burgeoning feelings for her and curiosity about the unspoken mechanics of "spooning" begin to take a heartbreaking turn. He is caught in the midst of a Romeo and Juliet tale that leaves him feeling torn by his friendship with all the parties involved. Leo is a heartbreaking character, but also relatable. A beautiful movie to watch, definitely recommend.
Tulip Fever (2017)
Would have been a good mini-series
I'm glad I watched it, but I think it actually suffered from too little time for such an elaborate story. When there are multiple story arcs to follow, it must either be tightly interwoven or given time to expand character development. While I never found it boring, it felt a little long at times for one sitting. Doing it in 3 or 4 hours might allowed time to tell more of the backstory of the main characters and flesh out the minor ones more. The acting was great and honestly the scene with doctor being chased up the stairs was actual quite comical! And Zach Galifinakis brings some understated levity to his role. Beautifully filmed as well, not to mention a fun dive into the world of "crazes", which have been around for hundreds of years.
Sleep Dealer (2008)
Don't let the subtitles keep you from a memorable film!
I had read about this film years before I actually saw it. The write up was intriguing enough that I kept it and when I saw the film, I understood why the reviewer said it was not to be missed. As society grows more and more tech-reliant, people become more and more isolated while still being "connected". This movie explores how little we might understand about what and who is really behind the things we enjoy and how little we may truly know about what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes. Poignant, moving, and completely unforgettable.
Órbita 9 (2017)
Focus on the story and you'll like this movie
As a sci-fi fan, I tend to bring my scientific mind to watching movies about space. But this movie is more about the interaction of the characters than the Orbiter itself. Much is left to the imagination and what information is given serves only to advance the plot, not create canon for this universe. And don't let subtitles put you off, it's a nice film, and well worth watching. Another Spanish subtitled movie you might like if you enjoyed this one is Sleep Dealers.
Infinity Chamber (2016)
Twists and turns keep you guessing..
Simply engrossing movie. I was 25 minutes into when my son came in and sat down -- and then stayed for the rest of the movie. If you have an active, analytical mind, you'll really enjoy trying to see where this movie it going. The acting keeps you engaged and the characters come to life. I don't want to put any spoilers in, but I would say add this one to your watch list. You won't regret it!
