AK vs AK (2020)
Excellent Bollywood Dark Comedy film that you should not miss watching
AK vs AK is overall an excellent Bollywood movie. It was a proper Dark Comedy storyline & with amazing Direction & Acting performances by the cast. I would have loved to rate this movie 10/10, however one serious problem with this movie is that the filming camera was unstable and shaky, so the action scenes were constantly wobbling & it was hurtful to my eyes. Though it may be for the purpose of adding realism to the plot, it turned out to be very uncomforable for us viewers.
Otherwise, a great movie & overall I would rate 8/10.
Angmapansa (2021)
Second half was a let down after an amazing first half
I liked The Devil Judge series for it's top notch cinematography and editing & excellent performance by Ji Sung. However, in terms of the storyline, while I found the first half (upto ep 9/10) very thrilling and well written, the second half was too draggy, angst-filled and kind of cartoonish. In addition, I found the character of Ga-On (played by Jinyoung) as too fickle and immature that he kept constantly flipping allegiance.
Overall, a good show that could have been so much better, especially in the 2nd half.
Beuramseureul Joahaseyo (2020)
Good lead pair romance, but poor story/plotline
I watched this Series knowing that it was a Music-based Romance Melodrama, however I feel there were only few heart-warming happy romantic scenes, whereas there were too many angst-filled depressing scenes plus unrealistic plotlines for the side characters without any proper development.
What I LIKED about the Series:
- The performance of the Lead Pair was amazing
- Episode 5 where they showed the budding romance between the leads was one of the best episodes in K-drama history
- Episode 9 when the leads kiss and confess their love for each other was good, but not as good as Episode 5
- The last part of Episode 11 where the Leads travel to Daejeon and get to meet the Male Lead's Mother was heart-warming
What I DISLIKED about the Series:
- The Second Female Lead is portrayed as a bad woman, but without giving a proper background or a realistic character development. Her break-up with her boyfriend was portrayed in a very cheap fashion & then in the Finale somehow they forget all their issues and get back to each other - that was a little difficult to digest
- The First Female Lead is shown to be going through extreme pains in her career for no reason & other than her supportive boyfriend, it looks like almost everyone else is out to knock her down - this I found to be unrealistic and too cartoonish
- The Female Lead's Professor treats her as her personal slave rather than a student merely because of her poor performance, rather than grooming her to get better. This gives a very bad impression about the Education System in South Korea (which of course is not true, but still)
- Episodes 12 to 15 were too gruelling & sad to watch. They should have provided a few comforting scenes in between, but four continuous depressing episodes is not easy to watch for the average viewers.
- The Finale (Episode 16) was decent, but the happy ending and resolution of issues somehow did not feel natural to me. It looks like the Writer would have wanted to stretch the series for 2 or 3 more episodes to provide a smoother and natural ending, but was forced to finish it within one episode only & hence the ending felt rushed to me.
Birbal Trilogy: Case 1 - Finding Vajramuni (2019)
A brilliant movie that deserves more recognition
I watched Birbal Trilogy Part-1 upon recommendations from my friends. Initially I was hesitant to watch it, as it has not got much hype or recognition among the current Indian movies, but after watching this movie I was stunned! Brilliant acting by MG Srinivas plus a really gripping story that kept us hooked on until the very end. I have very rarely come across a storyline of this quality among Indian movies.
The only minus points were that there were too many antagonists and not all of them were given complete, fulfilling roles & the other point is the length of the movie should have been trimmed to less than 2 hrs - the movie felt too time consuming.
Overall, it is a brilliant movie that deserves more recognition & I believe the movie director-cum-hero MG Srinivas has a very bright future ahead.
Thambi (2019)
One of the best Tamil movies ever made
Like another reviewer has already mentioned, I am also surprised by the relatively low IMDB rating (6.8) for this movie. In my opinion, Thambi is one of the best Tamil movies ever made. It has a gripping story and screenplay, plus really excellent performances from Karthi, Jyothika, Sathyaraj & Sowcar Janaki. The first half is good, but it is in the second half with the various gripping twists annd turns, that this movie really comes to shape as a true edge-of-the-seat thriller.
In fact, amongst Karthi's movies, I prefer Thambi over his other blockbuster Kaithi. Highly recommended to watch.
Penguin (2020)
Overall an average movie - nice visual effects, but poor story and screenplay
Positives:
1. Excellent visual effects
2. Very good acting by Keerthy Suresh
Negatives:
1. Poor story, especially depicting how a 7-month pregnant woman will dare to go on dangerous pursuits without taking help of her spouse or a good relative/friend.
2. Poor screenplay & weak dialogues
3. Two or more subplots running parallel in the story that did not link properly.
Thani Oruvan (2015)
Great thriller, one of the best Tamil movies made in the last 5-10 years
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie - a thrilling and engrossing script. Jeyam Ravi's acting was fabulous and Aravind Swamy was outstanding in this comeback movie after a long hiatus from the industry. I only wish the script was longer, especially the portion where Jeyam Ravi is constantly monitored via the GPS implant and harassed by Aravind Swamy. I wished there could have been at least one or two more subplots in that portion, whereas in the movie Jeyam Ravi discovers his implant too quickly in my opinion. Otherwise, it is a great movie & a must watch for any Tamil movie fan. It is the best movie that has come out of Kollywood in the last 5 to 10 years.
Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Good movie overall - solid performance from the actors, wish the story had more depth
Bajirao Mastani was overall a good movie - it was intended to be a romance-drama period film & it turned out to be exactly so. I wish the story had more depth, like portraying how clever and efficient strategist Bajirao Peshwa was, or indicating more details about his predecessors or successors in the Peshwa clan, or for example what happens to his kids after he passes away... instead it focused mostly on his romantic liaison with Mastani and how his clan were repressive towards her.
However it was still overall a very good movie to watch. The performances of the actors were excellent. Ranveer Singh did a fabulous job with his role as Bajirao Peshwa, his acting was flawless and entertaining, though a little bit I wish his role could have gone to a more senior actor like Hrithik Roshan or Aamir Khan (but that is just my opinion). Priyanka Chopra was good, but not great in her role as Bajirao's wife (though she acted really well towards the end). Other actors did a good job too, but for me the biggest star and stellar performer was Deepika Padukone in her role as Mastani. Her acting was thoroughly flawless, professional and an absolute treat to watch. Trust me, you can go watch this movie just for her role...
Will definitely recommended it to my friends and folks.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)
An emotional comedy-drama and family entertainer, not an action-packed adventure thriller
A movie about a young, mute Pakistani girl lost in India and the Hero braves all odds to help her safely return back to her home in Pakistan. Well, to be honest, I would have liked it to be a serious, technically-sound Adventure thriller along the lines of Johhny Gaddar or Bourne Identity - instead what I got to see was a typical Salman-style lame comedy-drama that we've gotten quite accustomed to watching over the last 10-15 years...
Having said that, I still enjoyed watching the movie because it shows Salman Khan in an emotional role, wanting to help the poor girl Munni out & rather than delivering kicks and punches like he does in every movie, he actually takes beatings for the sake of Munni - that was different and nice to watch. Harshaali, the young girl who acted as Munni, has done a good job with her role; but the best actor of the movie was Nawazuddin Siddiqui - he played an excellent role in assisting Salman Khan and occasionally taking charge of situations. I was very impressed with his acting. Kareena Kapoor's role was too short to be of significance - I wish she could have been given a greater role to play.
Overall, I would say it is an entertaining comedy-drama with you can watch with family, but don't go expecting it to be an adventure-thriller with a technically strong script, otherwise you'll be disappointed.
Papanasam (2015)
Great story, but too long and excessively violent 2nd half
The movie's story is really good & no wonder the original movie Drishyam was a superhit. However this tamil version Papanasam is too long, especially in the 2nd half. I feel that the no. of interrogation scenes could have been reduced as several of them were redundant & pointlessly adding to the length of the movie. Secondly, the police brutality in the 2nd half was too excessive and uncalled for. I don't care if the Director wanted to portray the harsh reality of police torture, he should be knowing that this is a U-rated family drama that kids will also like to watch, unlike a violent action movie that you'll want them to avoid watching. I heard that the original Drishyam movie is not as violent as the Tamil version and not as long, hence in that aspect I would not rate Papanasam highly.
Hunterrr (2015)
A pathetic and disgusting movie that promotes adultery and uncommitted sex
i really wish Indian movie writers stop blindly copying dumb Hollywood movies that glorify adultery and casual, uncommitted sex - because these movies are totally against our culture. Regarding my feedback for this movie, there are several points I wish to mention below:
1. The movie shows the hero seducing random women he meets on the street, in the shop, the office elevator etc. Viewers - BE WARNED - the Filmmaker is living in a fantasy world of his own, as this type of seducing will not work at all in India. Chances are, 9 in 10 women will slap the hell out of you; some may even complain to the police who may get you arrested for rape attempt. Is all that suffering necessary for just one short session of sex?
2. The movie shows the hero having sexual affairs with married women. Does the Filmmaker think it is fun in glorifying adultery? Does he not understand the pain the innocent husbands have to go through when they discover their wives' affairs? Oh, of course, we shouldn't bother about it too much - it's just light-hearted fun, right??? NO, it is not fun. Adultery in India is against the law - just like doing Drugs or Speeding your car is. If the Filmmaker was interested in glorifying a young man's lust for older matured women, he could have chosen to portray the women as say a divorcée or a widow, which could be somewhat acceptable- but why married women with committed husbands???
3. This movie may have been intended to be an "underground" movie, then why were they airing it's promos on regular TV channels that young kids watch during their free time? Filmmaker's secretly planning to influence young kids into the disgusting and dangerous world of casual sex and adultery??? Absolute shame, nothing else to say.
I seriously wish our Indian Censor Board do not allow these type of movies to enter our mainstream media, as these movies go against the very fabric of our Indian culture.
