Pokiri (2006)
One of the better action films of Mahesh Babu and best direction of Puri Jagannadh
Superstar Mahesh Babu who made his promising debut in Raja Kumarudu (1999), which was a super hit at the box office. However after his debut film, Mahesh's career turned out to be a big failure. Through he is a big actor in Telugu film industry. He gives few flops, averages and disasters after hits till 2000-2004 including the flops Yuvaraju (2000), Vamsi (2000), Takkari Donga (2002) the disasters Bobby (2002), Nijam (2003), Naani (2004) and the average Arjun (2004). Except Murari (2001), Okkadu (2003) and Athadu (2005), which all are blockbusters in Mahesh's career.
Mahesh Babu is back in another big action film Pokiri, which was released in 2006. It was a blockbuster at the box office. This movie gave Mahesh Babu in an action hero image, the film also creating new records and changed the definition of action heroes and action films in Telugu cinema in 2000's except in the 80's and 90's action movies which was badly handled, neither had cheesy stunts in there.
Pokiri (2006) is a typical action film which revolves around the story of a ruthless and fearless gangster Pandu, who works anything for his money. He lives in Hyderabad with his friends, they are also gangsters like Pandu. In Hyderabad, they are two mafia gangs headed by Dubai-based don Ali Bhai, and Narayana resort to criminal activities such as extortion, murder, and coercion for various reasons. The new commissioner of police, Sayyad Mohammad Pasha Qadri, focuses on making the city a better place by working at arresting all of them. Pandu later joins Ali Bhai's gang for monetary reasons. He falls in love with Shruti, an aerobics teacher. After Pandu falls in love with her, Shruti starting to fall in love with him at first sight. Shruti proposes to Pandu and thereafter Ali Bhai's gang arrived, the fight begins. After the fight sequence, It has some violence and Shruti shocked to see Pandu beating all these people, she was scared to Pandu, he reveals his identity. And at the end of the film, there is a big twist. Watch the movie to find out, is Pandu taking revenge to his father's death because Mani Bhai killed him or is Shruti reunite with Pandu? Is what follows the rest of the story.
Mahesh Babu as Pandu delivers a stellar performance after Nijam and Athadu. He carried out his role with his shoulders, his acting was excellent. His fights, his dances, his intensity to his eyes, his body languages and his anger (despite he's aggressive when he's shouting), he looks good in action and his serious character was good. Mahesh looks different compared to his previous films, in 1999-2004 he has a short hair and in 2006- 2007 he has a long hair. His long hairstyle suits him perfect. Ileana D'Cruz as Shruti did a very good job in her innocent role. He is the eye candy heroine of the film. Her chemistry and her romance with Mahesh was convincing and sizzling. Her smile, her innocence and her acting was good. Prakash Raj repeats his villain act, he excels his villainous character as Mani Bhai in the film. His dialogues, his mannerism, his menacing, his acting in his own part was awesome. He was perfect in his negative role. The rest of the actors did a good job and provide good support.
One of the big highlight of the film is the action sequences. When it comes to action, Mahesh nailed it. Despite the violence, the action scenes was very well choreographed and very well executed. Especially with the sound effects, Mahesh beats some bad guys is so brutal and violent. But it looks realistic and not over the top as the other Telugu action movies in 80's and 90's. Direction by Puri Jagannadh was very well shot, this is his best work till date. Not only did he redefined the action films but he even change the style of action films and action sequences. The other highlight of the film is the dialogue delivery of Mahesh Babu, his punch dialogues was very powerful and strong. They are many famous dialogues in this film, but my favorite line of Mahesh is " OKKASARI COMMIT AYITHE, NAA MAATA NENE VINANU" which was superb and its already becomes popular and famous dialogues in Tollywood. The cinematography was very well shot and captured with beautiful locations.
The music by Mani Sharma was good. The songs "Gala Gala, Dole Dole, Choddodhantuna are my personal favorite. Mahesh Intro's song Jagadame was catchy and the item song Ippatikinka is also good and catchy. Devuda song was also good, Mahesh Babu dance very well and Ileana dances too well.
Overall, Pokiri is a typical mass Masala Entertainer film with a good story, good screenplay with great direction and great action (despite the violence, I don't mind if it's violent). To all the Mahesh Babu fans, I would recommend to you all, watch this movie only if you truly a big Mahesh Babu fans or action lovers. Mahesh-Ileana-Puri Jagannadh combination works very well.
Bang Bang (2014)
One of the decent action comedy film but it's still Good
Superstar Hrithik Roshan made his fantastic debut in his father's directorial venture "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000)" which was a blockbuster at the box office. It was a big movie for Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan's career. After that, Hrithik giving a lot of flops and average films in his career. Hrithik's movies were flopped at the box office except one average film like Fiza (2000) includes Yaadein (2001), Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage (2002), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002), Mujhse Dosti Karoge (2002), Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003), Lakshya (2004), Kites (2010), Guzaarish (2010) which was a critically acclaimed film but sadly it was a box office bomb except the hit like Mission Kashmir (2000), the blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), Jodhaa Akbar (2006), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Agneepath (2012) and Krrish 3 (2013), they all are a critical and commercial success in Hrithik's career. Now Hrithik is back with a bang in a action comedy thriller film Bang Bang! (2014) which also stars her ZNMD co-star Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. It is a remake of 2010 Hollywood movie Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film was a commercial success and was a hit at the box office.
Bang Bang! is a stylish action movie with a lot of commercial elements with a dose of comedy, thriller, romance, adventure and drama. The story revolves around the colonel Viren Nanda goes to meet a wanted terrorist Omar Zafar in his holding cell. As Viren informs Zafar that he will be extradited back to India for his crimes, Zafar's men enter his holding cell, led by Hamid Gul killing all guards around them, with Zaffar then killing Viren by shooting him and then burning him. As Zaffar escapes in a helicopter waiting on the roof, he puts a $5 million reward for someone to steal the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the Tower of London, but with one condition – the thief must be Indian, to hold up a new extradition treaty between India and UK. Soon after, a international criminal named Rajveer Nanda steal it, and when Zaffar's men are informed of the theft, they travel to Rajveer for the deal. Although they initially travel with the $5 million reward, Rajveer informs them that he now wants $20 million for the deal. Following the disdain of the comment made by Rajveer, a fight breaks out between Rajveer and Zaffar's men after which Rajveer flies away. After Rajveer escapes, a CCTV footage of him is captured, showing that he is in Shimla. Following Rajveer's escape, he sees Harleen sitting in a restaurant, who is there waiting for her internet date, "Vickie", to show up. Will Rajveer be able to kill Hamid Gul or Omar Zafar? Is Rajveer taking revenge because of his brother gets killed? Is what follows the rest of the story, watch the movie to find out.
The flaws of the movie I would say, the romance was little bit forced in my opinion. The love story was almost unnecessary, it should have been avoided that. The story could have been a bit better because it was bit draggy, it lacks the script and the connection of the audiences like the single screens and the multiplexes. The story should have been made a bit better. Hrithik Roshan is back in his action avatar which reminds you of Aryan in Dhoom 2. Hrithik excels with his character portrayal. As Rajveer who is ruthless, smart, intelligent, stylish and bad-ass criminal, he did a great job, he did justice to his role. Katrina Kaif as Harleen delivers her comic timing, her dialogues, her smile, her innocence, she is very good in her role. Danny Denzongpa and Jaffred Jaffrey repeats their villain act, they are wasted in the film. They are playing villainous characters before, but here, they are wasted, I mean, they wasn't so much powerful enough I would stay. There are 2-3 villains who chase Hrithik and Katrina in the film, and that's all, there is nothing else. They are wasted. Pawan Malhotra as a cop Zorawar performed very well. Hrithik and Katrina's chemistry looks lovely, convincing and believable. They looks sizzling and hot together. The romance was probably one of the best combination and chemistry I have seen so far. The rest of the actors provides decent support.
The action sequences looks realistic which a bit similar to Hollywood movies nowadays. Even through its a remake of Knight and Day. The action was fantastic and it looks realistic. Thank God, there are not a cheesy stunts like crap action movies in the 80's and the 90's. And also there is not an one single over the top action where the actor got a punch and hits them and then people was flying anywhere. All the action stunts are fantastic. The direction by Siddharth Anand was fascinating, the cinematography by Sunil Patel are mind blowing and very well shot in the beautiful locations like Shimla, Abu Dhabi, Manali and Prague. The visuals looks fantastic and very well executed. The dialogues are good.
The music by Vishal-Shekhar was great. Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif's dance performance is a delight and visual treat to watch on the big screen. The songs Tu Meri, Bang Bang title track are catchy and party number which makes you dance on the floor. Meherbaan was a romantic song and it was very well shot in the city of Santorini in Greece. The background music by Salim-Sulaiman are sad but it was good.
Overall, Bang Bang is decent movie strictly to watch only for Hrithik Roshan fans. I'm also a big fan of Hrithik but the movie was decent, it could have been better only for the story and editing. But the visuals of the film and Hrithik-Katrina's chemistry is a must watch and worth watching.
Bodyguard (2011)
Bodyguard is one time watch movie for all the Salman Khan fans!
Bodyguard is another typical Mass Masala Entertainer film of Salman Khan after he give his blockbuster films like Judwaa (1998), Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (1999), Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010) and Ready (2011).
The story revolves around Lovely Singh (Salman Khan) is assigned as Divya's (Kareena Kapoor) bodyguard to protect her from goons hunting her to take revenge against her father, a kind and successful politician. Lovely is very devoted to his duties—but irritates Divya by following her everywhere. Divya and her friend Maya (Hazel Keech) call Lovely; with Divya pretending to be Chaya, a girl madly in love with Lovely, hoping this will distract him from his work. Initially hesitant, Lovely gradually starts loving the mysterious Chhaya and looks forward to her calls, but doesn't realize that it is actually Divya. Meanwhile, Lovely protects Divya on many occasions from the attacks of Ranjan Mahatre and his goons. Will Lovely and Chhaya will soon get fall in love? Will Lovely wins Diyya's heart before falling in love with her? It is what forms the rest of the story.
The plus point is the actors's performances, Salman Khan as Lovely, who's bodyguard, did'a decent job in this movie. His acting was decent and not as good as his performance in Dabangg. Through his performance was not really good, he is still the Megastar. I'm a big fan of Salman Khan. Through I have watch his movies all the time, there are certain movies are good also some of his movies are bad. But anyway I loved his acting in it. There were also when he was funny and emotional, he was good. He is very good in his own part. Salman is the entertainer, we all know that. Kareena Kapoor excels as Diyya, a innocent and simple girl who is a son of a politician. Her performance is brilliant, she looks beautiful and adorable here. She perform really well in this film. Her acting is always good. Rajah Rawail as Tsunami Singh is wasted in this film, bit in the comedy scenes, he was quite hilarious. Mahesh Manjrekar is also wasted, he was overacting. Raj Babbar as Kareena's father and Sharat Saxena as Salman's boss, they both playing very good in their own parts of the film. Hazel Keech is making his debut in Bollywood, she is cute and nerdy, she also done a good job in her part. Aditya Pancholi repeats his villain act, like in every films, we have always seen him playing a negative role. He was a bit over exaggerated and decent in this one. Katrina Kaif appears in the item song " Aa Gaya Hai Dekho Bodyguard ". She was superb, she can dance. She dances well. I have no words for her, she is a brilliant dancer. The action sequences is over the top but it was good and entertaining to watch. The cinematography was very well shot and executed as you could see on the film.
So now. Time for the loss, mostly, why I hate about this movie is the screenplay of the film. That was a big letdown, the screenplay was not good, there are some portions of the film, it was not smooth, so it was badly executed. The story could have done a bit better, but again, it was basic and illogical, There are some flows and portions of the film, It was draggy in every parts of the film, you felt like boring and also it is the same typical story, when the hero confronts the villain, the villain wants to kill a innocent girl and the hero is coming to save a girl and then the hero fights the villain. It's just dragging the movie even more. There are some portions, it was too dramatic at all, it doesn't make any senses and it doesn't make the movie any better. But I'm not going to tell you, who is gonna winning the fight, because I'm not going to spoil this one.. The rest of the story is that you should watch Bodyguard. The first part was good with the comedy scenes and great action sequences but the second half was quite average. But when the interval scene, when there was Salman Khan beating all the goons in the party and trying to save Kareena Kapoor. The interval fight scene was awesome. It was only the best scene of the movie. Its a commercial film, that's fine, the way it was not engaging to the audience and the way going through out, it was not well placed. But apart from that, you don't get captivated to watch the film. Even the story is basic, I don't mind its a typical and love story whenever, it has to be attracted, it has to be appealing and interested to the story and you felt engaging to the movie. The director fails miserably on that especially the story and screenplay, it doesn't go well. He fails to impress the audience. The love story too much boring and draggy, it was useless and it doesn't well placed to the movie. Its almost unnecessary and it was needed, the songs were not great, the only song i liked is the Teri Meri song and the introduction song of Salman Khan. The the two songs is actually very shot and very well placed to the movie. The title song gave us goosebumps and I felt like pumping. And the Teri Meri song was beautiful and very soulful and romantic. It was very well placed.
Overall, we don't get this kind of movie every year. I think Bodyguard is probably a one time watch movie that gonna came out probably two of three years. So it's very hard to directed to narrated the story in this movie. The story should have been made a lot better.
Kick (2014)
Below Average film of Salman Khan
Salman Khan was a typical action hero, who has many fans following across the world. Now he is doing typical masala entertainer film that we have seen so many times. He wants to entertain us to enjoy with family, kids and friends. Salman is doing another commercial entertainer film, which was a remake of Ravi Teja's earlier film Kick. When i watched Kick, it didn't fulfilled my expectations, I was disappointed, I have a lot of expectations to the movie, specially the story is not good, I was expecting something else, because even through i was expecting a much more crisper story line, a much more captivating and fascinating story line. But it wasn't there in the film. Normally i was expecting a proper action thriller film like only a serious action film with realistic stunts. But now it was a typical action film which has over the top action stunts when people was flying, there was no gravity and realism.
First of all, the first half was OK-sh, it has great funny moments, Salman was good but sometimes, he was overacting in some scenes, that overact scenes was similar to Ravi Teja in Kick. But Salman Khan was playing almost like a thief who wants to steal the money. The character was well-design but there are some portions of the film, he is a thief, of course, that it has to be someone like ruthless, someone is very smart and fearless that he can do anything to do his own stuff like if they faced someone, they was able to kill him at the middle of the film, but in this film, there was showing that his sides. You felt almost believable, which means you felt like OK he is not a proper thief, he is like a genuine person that he helps the children to save the kid in which his parents commit suicide. So they could have done a bit better characterization of Salman Khan. And Jacqueline Fernandez's characterization was good, again they could have done a bit better writing and characterization of Jacqueline Fernandez's portion. The rest of the actors like Randeep Hooda, he was amazing, his acting as a cop was very good and he did a good job. Nawazuddin Siddiqui also was amazing and brilliant in this film. His villain character was excellent and as a negative role, the way he deliver his dialogue, it was good.
The positive parts of the film is the performances. Salman Khan was very good, as I said there are some scenes, he overacts but the rest of the scenes, he did a good job in Kick, especially his fights, facial expressions and dance was excellent. There was also when he was funny and angry. He can performed as well. Salman is good performer and entertainer, we all know that. He is also a singer. For the second time, she is singing a song in Kick after Hello Brother (1999). For his character portrayal is that Salman is not actually a bad person, he is actually someone, that helps children to celebrate the Children's day, he is also a happy go lucky guy that he is looking for adventure, thrill, fun and kick. He is not a villain actually. In the film, there were showing that, Salman Khan is playing that Devil is actually a good person. Jacqueline Fernandez did a decent job, she doesn't really improved her acting in this film. She a bit overacting but even through, she has an important role in this film. Her acting was average. She has the same facial expression in Housefull 2 and she doesn't pulled off her acting. But hopefully she can prove her acting and get a better performance from her in the future. Nargis Fakhri as the item girl, we have seen her as a dancer, she is good.
As well as that, Randeep Hooda, the right person in this film without being too over-exaggerated to play a police officer, he did a excellent job. I like the fact they chose a better actor to play a cop. That's why I loved his acting, Randeep Hooda is almost overshadowed Salman Khan. But this film is all about Megastar Salman Khan, anyway but Randeep Hooda is playing a pivotal role to face Salman Khan. And Nawazuddin Siddiqui is good, his acting as a negative role is excellent. The only person in this film without being established themselves and over-exaggerated to play a villain. But even through, he is the antagonist in this film, Nawazuddin did a great job. He is one of the most underrated actor in Bollywood film industry that he can do any roles. As an actor, he proved himself and his acting is always good. After the positive parts, so now, lets talk about the negative parts Of This film. Mostly why I didn't like about the film is the writing and the screenplay, that was a big letdown. To was the climax scene, Salman Khan is now become a genuine person and the police officer without telling the true identity. That's why the director didn't well is the writing and the screenplay of the film. So Sajid Nadiadwala should do only a producer and distribution of the film. The story could have been a lot better, but again, the plot was the same typical story that the villain confronted the hero and the hero fights the villain. So the story should have done a lot better. The action sequences is good, again it could have been done better on the action sequences. It was realistic and over the top at the same time, but it was bit cheesy. So the action choreographer could have been made a better action stunts in this film. The songs are very good, it was very well placed especially Jumme Ki Raat, Yaar Na Miley and Hangover. Hangover was sung by Salman, he sings very well. He proves himself as a singer. Yo Yo raps the song Yaar Na Miley. His rap is also good. Jumme Ki Raat made everyone dancing in every parties. Of course, all the songs of the film became popular.
Overall, Kick is a below average movie with typical clichéd story and decent acting performances. Only Nawazuddin, Salman and Randeep was excellent. But that's all, they was nothing else, nothing new and special. You guys can watch this film without any expectations. But in my opinion, it's a one time watch movie. If you a big Salman Khan fan, you can watch this movie. If you want this kind of movie, just watch it, if you love it.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)
One of the worst movie in Salman Khan's career
I just watch PRDP, The movie was good to an extent but if you watch the movie as an overall, it was kind of disappointing and it was a terrible movie. It was Bakwaas (nonsense) and illogical movie. The direction wasn't so great. Especially the story, I was expecting something else, I wasn't expected a full at drama movie. Normally when you watch the movie, you get more appealing and more attractive and interested to watch the rest of the movie. You know like you get attracted, OK we get excited to watch the movie. But I wasn't feeling that at all in this one. The plus point and the good parts of the film is the cinematography, I was very well shot and they spend a lot of time for the money and the locations. Another good part is Salman Khan, so Salman Khan did a great job. As you could see that he's playing a dual role, one is a prince and the other is an lover and romantic person. He was excellent in this film. And the Sonam Kapoor is good, she was superb, her acting was good, she playing almost like a princess and lover in this film. The character was well design, There are some portions, they was showing her side that it was not believable which means like you felt like OK she is not actually a princess. She's like a shy and innocent person. So they could have done a bit better characterization for Sonam Kapoor. The negative parts and the mindless point is the story, the story is a big big letdown, it spoiled with too much drama, there is too much drama in this movie. Especially the first half was boring, towards the second half could have been better, again there is too much emotional in this film. It makes you boring and sleep all the time. You don't get captivating to watch this movie. The emotional sequence doesn't work at all, it was not well made and it did not fulfilled in this film. Towards the climax, where they was an action sequence, that's totally unnecessary, they need to cut that scene, its just dragging the movie even more. The only thing which I like is the football sequence and the music. The football scene where they was an song was funny and hilarious. It was very well done. And the music by Himesh Reshammiya was also good, there are some songs was very good and some songs was OK. With the family audiences, i think they felt like boring and tired to watch this movie. For me, when I watch the movie, I was so bored at theaters, I was like let's finished the movie very quick. Because it was just draggy. So the story could have been a lot better to get interesting to watch the movie. I heard that it has a big budget movie as well because of the VFX was terrible and so poor. It has a poor execution. I don't know there is something wrong or it's because of the post production and we don't able to see the vision of Sooraj Barjatya. This is turned out to be the mistake of Sooraj Barjatya did. He hasn't recreate the magic of classic films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain. Even i was expecting a much more fascinating and much more captivating story line. But it was not there in this film, it was missing. the film could have been the biggest romantic film ever but overall, PRDP is basic movie. There is nothing special in this movie. You guys can watch this film with your family without expectations. But in my opinion, its one time watch movie that's gonna come out probably 1 or 2 or 3 years. Its very hard to writing the story and executed the film. We should appreciated their effort at least this movie but even through the story was not appealing to me and the family audiences. We should encourage them to make such a movie with different story. Even through Sooraj Barjatya spend a lot of time to write the story and post production, just trying your best to make a big movie and better story line.
