Knokke Off (2023)
Soap opera, but with good actors and filmed on a beautiful location
This series really is no more than a soap opera. It's full of the typical clichés you would see in any youth series. I won't spoil the storylines, but you can think of the most common themes in any soap opera or youth series and put them together. Anyway, as you can tell.. it wasn't for me and I don't think it's the quality content some claim it to be. There was no originality and most of the times it was very predictable.
But apparently it ticks all the boxes for teenagers/young adults: Hot guys, hot girls, sex, drugs, a girl struggling with her disorder, more sex, an evil father, rich people and a not so rich person... etc. Etc.
So, why did I finish it? There was one mystery that I was curious about, so I wanted to know what happend, so there's that. And the entire series feels like eye-candy, so.. when you've got nothing better to do you keep watching for the hot actors and locations.
Some positives: Beauuutiful locations! And the acting was above average. Especially Alexander and Louise.
Savage River (2022)
Extremely slow show that doesn't deliver
I really hoped this was just another great mini-series like the ones that are based on Harlan Coben's books. But it really isn't that good. I don't wanna spoil anything, so I'll try to stick to the broad pros and cons:
Pros:
The surroudings. The scenery of Tasmania is really beautiful.
The acting is pretty good. No complaints here.
Cons:
It's a veeeeery slow show. It draws out every scene like it's a drama serie. The pace is the same every scene. You never get some action. And this is really weird for a series that is about a crime. In the end, I kept watching because I wanted to find out who did it. But the last three episodes felt like a choor.
There's one big mistake in this series. I really can't believe the makers didn't see it when they watched it for themselves.
El inocente (2021)
Sooo complex.
Just had to give a review, 'cause I got so confused in the second and especially the third episode. I mean.. I know it's supposed to be a mysterie series with a lot of puzzle pieces that will all fit together in the end, but.. there's no suspense for me as a viewer if I don't even know what I'm watching. I kept rewinding the series. I mean.. I don't get confused when there are new characters introduced. I know that at some point you'll get what they are doing and how they fit in the story. But this was just too complex. And the pace of spanish people talking didn't help either.
I thought Safe was really good! And The stranger was okay-ish. But this one.. I don't think I'm gonna finish it. Sorry about my bad english btw. I'm dutch.
Monster (2022)
From pretty good to leftist propaganda.
This show started off well. But the more episodes I watched, the more the pace of the series started to annoy me. Another thing that bothered me was the constant time jumps. It didn't make any sense. And then they mixed in some political stuff about race, even though Dahmer also killed white and a latino men. And of course it's all the (white) police fault, according to Netflix. It's true that the police made some horrible mistakes, but of course Netflix had to portray some pure evil white cops.
And the last two episodes get totally ridiculous. They make a charicature of the christian faith. No pastor would ever say 'congratulations, your sins are forgiven' after you're baptized. 'cause that's not what baptism does. Yes, it symbolizes it. But if you don't believe that Jesus died for you, then there's no forgiveness of sins. So, this show is kind of ridiculing the christian faith by telling that Dahmer just gets his peace with God for going down in a bath.
And then there's the killer of Dahmer.. man.. I won't spoil anything, but they totally make that political as well. Sorry about my english. It's not my native language.
Anyway, a 2 for the acting.
The Case for Christ (2017)
One of the best christian movies out there!
I'm a christian and yes, I like this movie. But not only because I like the message. I'll be the first to admit that most christian movies are either too preachy, contain bad acting or depict atheists as stupid.
This movie is different though. The acting is top notch and the screen writing is great too! And it's actually pretty funny at times. There are several occasions in which Lee has a funny interaction with a colleague or his wife.
The protagonist really comes to live. The actor who plays Lee Strobel does a great job. You can really tell he's this skeptic guy who wants proof. Or better: Lack of evidence, to convince his wife that the resurrection of Christ is based on a lie.
Anyway.. I understand people who say that in the debates there are some moments where the atheists don't come up with the best arguments against christianity. But this movie isn't one big debate about who is right. The movie is based on a true story that they wanted to tell.
And if I may add one thing about this. Why do atheists hate this movie for not having the best arguments against christianity, when, at the same time, they love it when in True detective (season 1), a pastor is depicted as hypocrit and a group of church-goers are depicted as naïeve with the entire congregation putting their hands in the air with their eyes closed? Why don't I hear atheists complain about how christians are always being depicted as either naieve, preachy or hypocrite people who say one thing, but do another thing (secretly sleep with someone else, tax evasion or abuse kids)?
I may understand why, in some cases. If you've had bad experiences with christians in your life, you want something or someone to acknowledge what you've been going through. You want to point at that movie and say: 'Yes! That's what they are like'. But even if you get recognition for all your pain, it doesn't make it a fact that the christian faith is either true or false. There may be bad christians, but there are also true christians who want to follow Jesus in everything. You don't judge a faith by those who believe in it, but by the book or person they believe in.
Anyway, if this doesn't go for you or if you think this is all some bul***** what I'm saying here, then at least be a little annoyed too, when christians are depicted as one-dimensional characters whose brain-cells went out of the window as soon as they became a christian. And don't accept it as a fact when christians are shown like that in movies, but dig a little deeper into a person or his faith.
Anyway, great movie :)
Catching Killers (2021)
Better than your average ID-show
I accidentally watched some episodes of the second season first. But that doesn't really matter. It was well put together. But I wish I knew a little more about the motives of the killers. But maybe they didn't want to put criminals on a.. what do you call that in english? Like.. you don't want to praise them. (Sorry, I'm dutch. English is not my native language)
They probably wanted to focus on the detectives and that was neatly done.
This is a side-note, but one of the detectives mentioned he drank a couple glasses of whisky every night. I don't understand how an alcoholic can be part of law enforcement, but maybe that's America. I mean.. the guy had a red nose like a true alcholic.
Twee zomers (2022)
Pretty good, although hard to follow in the beginning and a little preachy
Just finished the series. It's pretty good. Acting was good, story was very good, it was sometimes a little bit slow and I thought it was pretty believable.
A few negative things: In the beginning it was very hard to tell which person of the past was which one in the present. Sure, in come cases it was easy to identify them, but it didn't help that Sophie didn't look like her younger self at all.
The second negative for me is that it was a kinda preachy. Like they were telling us: this is what's happening these days and this is what's wrong with certain people. I'd better not say anything else, 'cause I want this to be a spoiler-free review. Anyway, just go watch it. You'll enjoy it. I binge-watched within 24 hours.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Such a shame
I didn't finish it. The detective couldn't stop taking the Lord's name in vain. And I'm not talking about once or twice, but no less than seven times within five minutes. I'm usually like: Oh well.. she has said it already. I may as well continue watching. But in this series... every time something happend she didn't like, she said 'J*sus*' or 'Chr*st' or both, so she will probably continue to do that throughout the series. I don't know why screenwriters find it so difficult to find another way of showing that someone is disappointed or angry.
The Weekend Away (2022)
A simple whodunnit
Not the best thriller I've ever watched. One-dimensional characters, twists only for the twists and some plotholes. Acting was just so so. It wasn't all bad. But I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey (2018)
Very well acted. Underrated movie.
I liked it. It's a true story and therefore it doesn't come with a lot of twists and turns. It probably just sticked to the true story. But the acting is very well done and the execution is great too. A few negatives: Not everything looked exactly like the eighties. And near the end of the movie it gets a little bit slow.
The Stranger (2020)
'Safe' was so much better than this one.
I expected this to be so much better than it turned out to be. Especially after watching 'Safe' (also by Harlan Coben). I was left with so many questions in the end.
Safe (2018)
Almost perfect!
The acting was pretty darn good, the plot was amazing and there was mystery and suspense almost all the time. I was hooked from the start and I was never bored throughout the eight episodes!
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Starts off well, but in the end..
They really made this look like it's set in the sixties and the chess matches are very realistic too! Compliments! And the acting is quite good too.
But in the end.. it's about sex again. Oh, and alcohol and drugs. After five episodes I really don't know if I want to watch the last two hours of this show. It gets quite repetitive. And the thing is.. there are no cliffhangers. It ripples on, but you can quit at any moment. There's nothing that makes you want to watch another episode. I mean.. of course, if you like it, you will watch the next episode, but no real cliffhangers. It's simply about her life.
Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012)
Terrible movie, terrible remake. Indiana Evans makes this a 2 instead of a 1.
Poor acting, unoriginal story, very cliché dialogues, unrealistic as in a guy not growing a beard even after more than a week.. it's ridiculous.
And of course any nudity is neatly left out. Nevertheless.. Indiana Evans is worth looking at.
Identity (2003)
Decent thriller
Decent thriller. But we've seen it all before. The question is though: Maybe this was the first one with a multiple personality syndrome.
I'm not gonna tell which other movies are out there with the same story, but I can come up with at least four that share the same story. They were all shot after this movie, so yeah.. maybe this one was still original.
About the movie: It was well executed, the acting was okay and I enjoyed it. But I had already read in a comment here that it's all about this man with a multiple personality syndrome. But I still wanted to watch it.
Panic Room (2002)
Not that good
This thriller was just not that good. The main characters make some weird decisions and some of the bad guys are as dumb as the home alone-burglers. The acting is alright. If this movie wasn't this short, I wouldn't have finished it.
Leave No Trace (2018)
Kinda boring
This movie didn't really do anything with me. I didn't laugh, didn't cry, didn't surprise me and there were no beautiful shots or something.
And I also think too little is shown about the background of both characters. I know that sometimes it can be a good thing to leave it to someone's imagination or to not explain everything, but it didn't help to enjoy the movie.
I See You (2019)
Not quite what I expected, but fun for a night out
I really don't understand the extremely high ratings here. I enjoyed the movie and the first part was original, but there are so many things that annoyed me. First of all there's the music. It's so overwhelming when it's not necessary at all.
But there are also some very weird decisions of the protagonists. I mean... if you're a girl and (you think) you are being kidnapped, you run away as far as you can as soon as you get the chance. But this girl calls the police, gets scared, doesn't finish the call, but then suddenly decides to take a peek at a caravan where something strange seems to be going on.
I only gave this an 8 because so many people gave this a 1, a 2 or a 3. That's just not fair.
Prison Break (2005)
Best series ever! Characters, music and story are superb!
This is by far the best series I've ever seen. It had drama, good acting, suspense, it's really fast-paced and it's smart. So extremely clever. Oh, not to mention the music. The soundtrack is so good.
The characters may seem a little cartboarded now, but it's not annoying and the actors played them perfectly. T-bag, abruzzi... you don't want to encounter them in a small alley. And what about Gretchen and Mahone.
Man, I loved this series. And I'm definitely gonna watch it all over again real soon.
The only two things I didn't like so much was the ending (season 4, I didn't watch season 5 yet).
Anyway, go watch it, if you haven't yet. In ten years this series will look pretty old, I guess.
Zodiac (2007)
Not that interesting
The acting was good, but the movie doesn't really know what to focus on. There are several protagonists and there's a little drama, but it's not a real drama. And there's some violence and some suspense, but you can hardly call this a thriller.
I enjoyed this for the acting of Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo and Downey junior and the funny parts. And one particular scene when Gyllenhaal visits a filmmaker at his home. But overall.. it was a very long movie and I wasn't emotionally attached to it. It wasn't like I couldn't pause the movie to take a leak or grab some snacks.
Ricos de Amor (2020)
Beautiful scenes, decent acting and quite funny.
Just watched this movie. I rarely watch romantic comedies. But since I'm learning portuguese, I figured this would be a good way to learn some more.
But it was actually quite entertaining. The acting was good, the couple was very good looking and it was quite funny at times.
If you want to watch a movie with your girlfriend for a nice evening on the couch, then this is a good one.
The Gift (2015)
Pretty darn good!
When I heard this movie could be a little slow, I wasn't looking forward to watching this. I hate it when movies just drag on. But this one wasn't like that. Maybe there were one or two scenes a bit too long or unnecessary, but that's it.
From the start until the end every scene becomes more interesting and more suspenseful than the former. The tension is subtle, but sometimes you can really feel the fear.
One of the things I liked about this movie is that you actually get some time to think what everything will lead to. You know it builds up to something, but you don't know what.
And another thing that I liked is that I didn't know any of the actors. I guess it's also because I haven't seen a lot of movies in my life. But I don't think the female actor was very famous anyway.
Anyway... the movie isn't perfect, but if you like a good thriller and you've seen the very best, then this one is next.
Unsane (2018)
Veeeery unrealistic, but enjoyable most of the time
From the start, you know you're watching a movie made by people who didn't take the effort to do research. Maybe because if they did, this story wasn't possible. And I can accept some unrealistic scenes, but this was hard to accept sometimes. But the story was fun, the acting was good. And after 15 minutes, I wasn't annoyed anymore by the iPhone-filming.
Would I recommend it? Yeah, if you're bored and you've got this one on your shelf...
Sorry for my poor english. English is not my mother tongue.
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
Better than expected
This was a pretty good thriller. It's a bit cliché at times. But I liked the atmosphere. I mean... this is what it could be really like. Serial killers don't act like serial killers. So, when you're watching a movie about someone close to a serial killer, you will see the every day life of an american teenager.
So, some might say: I miss suspense. But there's some psychological suspense.
Of course the movie isn't perfect. The ending leaves some questions. And most characters are a bit flat. But the acting is good, the story is good, the music is good, the suspense is good.
I've enjoyed this one a lot. Sorry about my english. I'm from the Netherlands.
Joker (2019)
Don't believe the hype
This was such a disappointment! It was dragging on. And I was waiting for things to explode. I don't get the hype. Everybody is calling this a 'masterpiece', but nobody can tell me why it was such a masterpiece. If it was a movie about how a society creates a killer, then it was done very poorly. To me, it felt just like a large number of scenes without a real story.
