Star Trek: Short Treks (2018)
Nice Return to Classic Formula
The first short trek "Runaway" is very much a classic moral-of-the-story trek episode basically with a "believe in yourself" message. Ensign Tilly helps a stowaway make the right decision and return to help her people as the new queen.
Star Trek: Discovery: Context Is for Kings (2017)
Battlestar Trek vs Predator 3: The Expanse
This was a beautiful weaving of many different sci-fi themes into one fantastic episode that definitely should have been the pilot for the series. Amazing work of science fiction, not totally the Trek feel but it's reaaaally good. While the episode is very dark, it also explores themes central to the franchise as a whole. Especially with the character Paul Stamets who really questions if it's worth it to stay in starfleet as a soldier when he signed up to explore the universe and why life exists in the state it does.
Iron Fist (2017)
A 17% on Rotten Tomatoes? Give me a break
It seems that critics have been pampered by Netflix and their superhero shows. This series is by no means perfect, but it is quite good. Since it is not as good as Daredevil, many critics are blasting it based on a few mishaps in the show. Give me a break, even the terrible Daredevil movie has a better rating. I say the show is pretty damn good, better than Luke Cage, but on par with Jessica Jones and not as good as Daredevil.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Amazing Movie That Captured the Themes of Trek Extremely Well
What you are about to read contains spoilers, go back if you do not want to see them.
What can I say? This movie was spectacular. From the beginning to the end, it captured what makes Trek truly special. Not only did the movie explore diplomacy and cultural relations with other species on other planets, but it also explored the future and the past of humanity, which is ultimately what Star Trek is about. Gene Roddenberry created a Wagon Train-style Space Cowboy series to hide the real intent of his masterpiece: exploring what it truly means to be human and what issues we face, whether they may be related to war or discrimination or whatever else.
You want to know what really sealed the deal for me though? The accurate source material. By God, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung created the perfect screenplay that followed the source material of all of the series, but mainly Enterprise. Now, I may have some bias here considering that Enterprise is my favorite Trek series (because of the premise of the youth of human exploration) but it truly was amazing how accurate it was. They had accurate weapons (spatial torpedoes and pulse phase cannons), accurate clothing on the video footage, they showed a shuttle pod in the video footage from the show, the cargo looked the same, it was a WARP 3 SHIP which actually fit the era!
The icing on the cake here besides the accurate sourcing was the legitimate villain. I thought throughout the whole movie that it was just some random alien dude and I was a little disappointed, but HE TURNED OUT TO BE THE CAPTAIN OF THE USS FRANKLIN!!! That twist was amazing and I must say that I did not see it coming. Great plot, great writing, accurate sourcing, and most of all...it actually FEELS LIKE STAR TREK!!! This movie is rate up there with First Contact for me. I can't wait to see what the frontier holds for the future of Trek, in the movies and on the small screen!
