Smile (2022)
Great Idea and Production
I went in expecting to jump at everything but I didn't. It was a fantastic film with scenes that make you unsure of what you've just witnessed and what's really going on. It kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next scare.
The film is put together amazingly. Sosie puts on an award winning performance that I couldn't help but marvel at. At times, I felt just as confused and terrified at the things her character was experiencing.
All that said, I must admit that I wasn't as jumpy as I thought I would be. I did, however, leave the movie a bit paranoid. The whole cursed traumatic idea is something that never crossed my mind until it was brought up in the movie, which surprised me because most movies are quite predictable. I would love to see a prequel where they explore the origin of the curse.
A great movie that makes you feel just as uneasy as the characters with an ending that I forces you to question everything. Amazing!
Hard Cell (2022)
Hilarious and Unpredictable
The best show about women in prison I've ever seen. The characters are hilarious and heartfelt. It ridiculous but somehow has wholesome lessons for everyone. Also, never trust the "innocent" bitch.
Arlo the Alligator Boy (2021)
Unbelievably Sweet and Relatable
Arlo isn't just an alligator boy... Arlo is the sweetest most genuine kid who just wants to see the world and find his father. He longs to interact and explore the world after living in the swamp with with a sweet and loving yet tough woman who took him in.
At the age of 15, he sets out to New York City to find his father. Along the way, he meets his best friend, Bertie who is used to being on her own until Arlo shows her what she can have. Arlo's curiosity about the world introduces him people who don't quite fit in with the rest of the world but he doesn't see it that way. Arlo finds the best in these people and brings them together in only a way a kid like he can. He may be a bit naive in this new world but the friends he meets on his way to the big city keep an eye out for him and show him what he's been missing.
The soundtrack and animation is so beautifully put together. I've never felt so understood. I would go on and on about the rest of the movie but I don't want to spoil it even more, especially because I think everyone who has ever felt alone or like an outcast should watch this. It doesn't matter how old you are because this sweet and emotional movie is a wonderful thing to experience.
My Dead Ex (2018)
Wish We Got More
The first season is so good and the finale was so sweet. I really wish there was more to it or at least a second season to show where they are now.
Yes, we got the to see the two finally get together and it felt amazing but I can't help but feel like there could be so much more, like how they deal with aging or Charlotte finally embracing her artistic self. It would also be interesting to figure out how many more people are like Ben.
It may seem like the story is over but it could have been a lot better with at least a second season.
Panic (2021)
Has Potential
The show could be a hit, especially with that last scene and cliffhanger. It would be great to see the characters come together again to unravel the secrets of the game and who invented it.
I enjoyed the narrating and the character development. The characters may seem predictable but then throughout the series you see that they overcome those stereotypes and show the watchers they can be quite complex. I binge watched the entire season and was hoping for a season 2. There is so much more for the characters and the game.
The show didn't really get any promotion so I didn't find out about it until I got a trial subscription from Amazon. I honestly believe that if the show was on a different streaming platform like Netflix or Hulu then it wouldn't have been cancelled. It's a shame because the show ended in a cliffhanger and left a lot of room for exploration.
Hopefully it gets picked up by another platform or miraculously renewed. Amazon doesn't do it's shows or movies justice, especially the hidden gems like Panic.
LOL: Last One Laughing Canada (2022)
Hilarious
This was so fun and awkward to watch in the best way possible. I just wish there were more seasons because this is one of my favorite shows now. The things they did for a laugh was so hilarious and I have been re-watching the season because it's fun to watch comedians kind of lose it while trying to break other comedians.
Marry Me (2022)
Wasn't Expecting I'd Love It
I went in thinking that it was going to be incredibly hard to watch but it was actually so heartwarming and kind of relatable. Well, as relatable as it can be when the movie is about a Popstar.
Charlie and Kat live completely different lives but they meet at Kat's concert where she's supposed to marry her fiancé in front of their fans. Charlie is persuaded to go to the concert by his friend Parker. She forces him to hold onto a sign saying "marry me" as Kat appears on stage.
She has just seen a video of her fiancé cheating on her with her assistant and stops the music to make a short speech about loving the idea of someone, which Charlie is seen listening with a mirrored expression of heartbreak. In this moment, Kat impulsively says yes and points to Charlie holding the "marry me" sign. Parker and Lou, Charlie's daughter, push him to walk to the stage and he says okay to marrying Kat.
The heartache on Jennifer Lopez's face made me want to punch her fiancé in the face. It was so awkward and sincere that I felt like someone cheated on me, which was awful but in a good way.
Charlie brings Kat down to earth a little more while they stay married for 6 months, which was Kay's idea, by just being himself and challenging her to do more things on her own, without a whole team helping her out in her day to day life.
He's an ordinary math teacher who just wants his daughter to be happy and encourage the kids to win the mathalon. Charlie is surprised to see that Kat may be famous but she's not full of herself, and that allows them to open up to each other.
They begin to really connect when Kat finally gets the nomination she's been dreaming of, which, unfortunately, brings her ex back into her life. Charlie sees how happy Kat is in her world and fears he doesn't belong by her side so he ends things after seeing a livestream of Kat's performance with her ex. He leaves before he can get his heart broken, and I find that so relatable.
Charlie goes back to his old life but things just aren't the same for him or the Popstar. Kat is seen doing things on her own and writing a song that makes you yearn for love. Charlie sees Kat's face everywhere.
By the end of the movie, you can tell what the ending is going to be but it still tugs at your heart. Kat runs from Jimmy Fallon's show after admitting that the love song she wrote wasn't for her famous ex at all. She tries to get a plane ticket to the mathalon on her own, but she finds that it's much more difficult than she thought. Luckily, her manager is there to help her get to where she needs to go. She misses the big moment for Charlie's daughter but speaks up and holds a sign asking him to marry her... again.
The supporting actors and actresses are so talented and deserve a huge mention because they help bring the main characters more humanity and bring comedic relief to the drama when needed.
I've watched it twice and I love the music. The story is easy to map out in your head from the start but it's worth watching to get that happy feeling. It's a huge plus to see these huge stars dancing and having a blast with the kids in Charlie's math club. It's adorable.
The Great North (2021)
Hilarious and Sweet
The love in this show is awkwardly honest and hilarious. There's nothing but love in this animated family going through life together and growing together without their estranged mother.
The family has so much going on in their own lives but they make sure to spend time together no matter what.
Wolf and Honeybee are the most adorable couple and their love is so sincere and special.
Wolf is so full of love for his family and will do anything for them. Honeybee is the best in-law anyone could ask for and she embraces the Alaskan life with the Tobin family with open arms and so much love.
Judy's love for the arts is wonderful and her upbeat attitude helps her out when fighting right and wrong. Ham is the sweetest brother and the most innocent kid and inspiring baker you'll ever see. The Alaskan Twins are an awkward and cute duo to watch, especially when they help each other out.
Moon is the youngest but he's the often the steady minded person in the room. His adorable bear jacket might throw you off but he's arguably the most mature minded kid you'll ever ever see. He's also a very strong willed, animal helping, and most courageous kid, in my opinion.
Beef is their dad. He's the tough yet soft hearted father who will do anything for his family. All he wants is to spend time with his kids on their boat and at their home. He does what he can to support them no matter what, even when he doesn't quite know what he's doing but he's always happy to try for his family. This shows in every episode.
The Tobin family are awkward but so cute together. They spend most of their time helping each other and just hyping each other up to get through the day.
It's a lovely show that I can watch all day. Like Bob's Burgers, this show is family oriented and each episode is a testament to their love for each other.
Phobias (2021)
Sad Execution for a Possibly Promising Series
The story vaguely sticks with you at the beginning and then you're on the side of the leading man as he shows he's not afraid of the man who bullied him.
You would think more would happen when he's running away from this electro-being in the shape of a human, which was a fantastic addition, but then it's like you took both the red and blue pill. Now you're somewhere else and you don't even know what the hell is happening or why.
Suddenly you're shown very short scenes of other people's lives and then the leading man explains everything and suddenly everything and everyone is safe from going through phobia torture.
This could have been an amazing limited series where there was much more time for stories and characters to develop and grow. Instead, there's just an awful flop for what could have been an amazing story for each character to have the endings they deserved.
Crazyhead (2016)
Could Have Been F-ing Legendary
The sad part of finding a true GEM is that you don't know you've invested so much of your time and excitement on something a few other people didn't care about as much as you so you have to hope with everything inside you that someone with the power to bring it back sees it and realizes that it deserves more.
It's an awesome show. The humor is quite refreshing for such a serious topic and that's what makes it fantastic. The characters of the show are all their own people so it's always interesting when they interact and create memorable moments that are hilarious.
I wonder if they'd be willing to come back and continue...
Dolittle (2020)
Heartwarming and a little weird
An astonishing reminder that animals are everywhere and that speaking their language can get you very far.
The movie showcases a boy wanting to find his place and a grown man hiding in his home after losing the love of his life who loved adventure. It's the classic "man takes boy under his wing" story but the man isn't teaching him anything other than being kind to animals isn't a bad thing.
You'll see the boy get scolded by his father for letting ducks go while they're trying to shoot them. While trying to stay in father's good graces, he takes a shot at what he assumes is an empty area and accidentally injures a squirrel and then a bird leads him to a place where he can find the man who can heal the squirrel.
The movie is full of love, adventure, friendship, lessons, and animals, of course. I was happy to see the silliness that the previous version had while also factoring in the fact that life is short and you should do what makes you happy.
My Friend Dahmer (2017)
Exactly how I imagined Dahmer
This is not a documentary but it definitely feels like one. You see the ups and downs of not just Dahmer but the people around him which gives it that true movie feel. To truly understand this, you have to remember that this is an adaptation.
The cast brings the graphic novel memoir by Backderf to life in the perfectly twisted and haunting way just the novel's cover makes you feel. The whole movie is just as spine tingling as the graphic novel, if not more.
Don't forget that Backderf wasn't a close friend of Dahmer's at all, and was simply someone in the young man's life before he evolved into a true killer. The future serial killer had no real friends and made it through school by basically being Backderf and his group's personal freak who thrashed around and moaned in public to freak out anyone around them as a way to entertain the group.
In the end, Dahmer is left to his own devices and finally realizes that he was being used and humiliated to entertain Backderf and his group. His life spirals out of control almost immediately and the movie shows Dahmer holding a bat and inviting Backderf into his empty house. Backderf refuses when he senses something wrong and drives off.
Let's not forget Dahmer's sexuality and the inner turmoil that brings. It seems that Jeffrey Dahmer was meant to live a terrible life, but maybe with the right group, some intense counseling, a family who actually cared, and the lack of hunger for human flesh maybe the killer could have had a somewhat normal life. Although, I'm not entirely sure it would be in a place that wasn't in an asylum or a similar place.
Truthfully, the movie has made me wonder about all the lonesome kids who could possibly go down the road Dahmer or any other killer has. Is there a way to prevent another Dahmer?
The Half of It (2020)
The Kind of Story That Could Happen
The film is so awkwardly and beautifully written and given life. The actors give their all to make this bittersweet story so lovable. I'm going to leave out some parts that I believe you should honestly just watch because they're so good.
The friendship in this show is hilarious as you see the intelligent young Ellie try to help the adorably clueless Paul get the girl of his dreams... who Ellie also likes. The plan works somehow and Aster, their shared love interest, goes on a few dates with Paul and even kisses him!
We soon realize that Paul actually started falling for Ellie and begins showing it by wanting her at his game and taking care of her when they go to a party and she gets drunk.
Everything begins to fall apart when Paul tries to kiss her. She refuses but Aster is there to see it and storms off while Paul realizes Ellie is in love with her.
The true breaking point is when they're all in church. Yes, in church. Aster is blindsided when her boyfriend sort of asks her to be his wife. She nods her head and then Ellie shouts no. Ellie struggles to find the right words until Paul stands up and speaks up about pretending. Eventually, Ellie confesses that she wrote the notes and texts that Paul took credit for in a way that only Aster would know. Aster slaps Paul and walks right out of the church, leaving a huge mess in the church.
Then, Ellie waits for Aster outside a restaurant and they have an awkward and sad chat that evolves into cute teasing before they part. Just kidding. Ellie drops her bike and kisses Aster who just smiles and chuckles when Ellie says, "See you in 2 years!" And then actually leaves.
In the end, Ellie and Paul are at the station saying goodbye. We hear her laughing and crying as Paul runs after the train like they watched in a movie and then she turns back in her seat while lovingly calling him a moron.
This movie will definitely leave you wanting more, especially because of all the promise the three kids have.
The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show (2020)
Ridiculous and Unpredictable
I've been a fan of Iliza's comedy for years. I honestly feel like this shows us what's going on in her comedic mind. It is truly unique and awkwardly hilarious.
I feel like these are the jokes and bits that she had thought of and decided to bring them to life in the show. The randomness and irony in the show is honestly refreshing.
Thunder Force (2021)
New Take on Superhero Misadventures
A true feel good movie that will keep you laughing. It's made with so much heart and the friendship between Emily and Lydia is beautiful.
The movie was the best thing to begin my week. I will definitely watch it again. I usually hate watching movies more than twice but I'll watch this waaayyy more than that.
The cast is perfect together. Octavia and Melissa should make more movies together, that's for sure. They honestly all work wonderfully together and make this hilarious movie a loving movie as well.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020)
Amazingly beautiful
Wasn't expecting what happened in the first episode and now I'm hooked. It's truly one of a kind and Zoey is a lovely character who tries to live her life with her new musical powers. The show is filled with all emotions and the musical aspect makes everything easier to take in. The characters have depth and the show is amazing and I love how Zoey's powers help her open up and show her true colors.
Call Me Kat (2021)
Hilarious
I love when she breaks the fourth wall. She's hilarious and loves cats. It's amazing and I can't get enough of it. Can't stop watching! The characters have depth and are so hilarious I can't stop laughing.
Mayim is as socially awkward as I am and it's awesome to see someone like me. I love this show so much and I'm only on the second episode.
The end of the episode is awesome. The cast pop up and wave goodbye.
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
Blew my mind
Wasn't expecting it to be hilarious and full of drama and heart. I had put it on my watchlist a while ago and decided to give it a shot one day. I do not regret it one bit. I love how all the different genres are intertwined in such a way that makes it work. I wasn't sure I'd like it but I love it and it's now my favorite Christmas movie.
