Babylon (I) (2022)

Messy but good for the right audience
2 January 2023
This is a very messy film. It's an ode to cinema that tries to do too much. That said, I did enjoy most of it. The final act is the most interesting.

Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie were great, but Diego Calva was most impressive to me. He is the "main character" (if you can argue that one story had more emphasis than the others) and he delivers with the most compelling moments. There's a lot of highs and lows in this movie, and Diego is in all the highs.

I wish there had been more of Sidney Palmer's story. His Hollywood journey was enough for a standalone film, and yet his story felt like an afterthought. Tobey Maguire was also introduced too late and we were robbed of a really creepy performance by him

Again, messy movie but it's worth the watch if you're ready for a chaotic story (and a long one)

The Wire (2002–2008)
10/10
It lives up to the hype
9 November 2022
When I first started looking into the greatest TV shows of all time, I saw The Wire on most lists. I didn't believe it could be that good but it was

The show is very deceiving. While it does start as a cop show, it evolves and you learn about the other side of crime in Baltimore. That alone was a reason to stay hooked, but the show evolves each season. It adds new characters and storylines in fresh ways to add social commentary. It's cops and dealers, but also unions, police reform, the education system, the media, and more. By the end, it's about the entire city of Baltimore.

It deserves every word of praise it has ever received (and the criticisms too, but there are fewer of those). I kick myself for not starting this sooner and ever since I've finished, I've been looking for shows like this. None come close.

It's a Kevin Hart Action Movie
25 June 2022
Pretty much Ride Along with an assassin instead of a cop. It's predictable, pretty forced, but enjoyable if you like Kevin Hart. Woody's role was originally Jason Stathum's and you can tell. Overall, not bad for a Netflix film, but nothing special.
