Prosper (2024)
Stunning Exploration of Hubris and Family
Incredible performances - Richard Roxburgh is truly one of the best actors around today. Great writing, stunning cinematography, complex character studies, nuanced, intelligent music, editing and stylised direction. The twists and turns are incredibly compelling. There are still lots of unresolved stories so would love season 2 asap! We binged it all in one day. Stylistically it's part Succession, part Fall of the House of Usher, and its own style of mystery and drama. Prosper is a brilliant achievement - a stunning exploration of hubris, family, love, desire, hypocrisy, deception, influence and the fall of man. Wow! Very excited for season 2!
The Suicide Squad (2021)
The worst film I've seen in a long time.
Where do I begin? What is happening to cinema? How could James Gunn do this?
Lucifer: Daniel Espinoza: Naked and Afraid (2021)
What an ending
Brilliant episode.
Loved this. (Spoiler alert next)
Anyone else watch the game with Michael douglas? It's like lucifer's version of that! So many moving parts in this episode. A slow beginning at first and you don't really know how this will end until the last minute.
The Romanoffs (2018)
Spectacular
The Best drama I've seen in years. Nuanced. Well-written. Emotionally complex characters that are brilliantly acted. Casting on point. Matthew Weiner has an incredible ability for world-building - I feel the verisimilitude from the opening sequence. He is also a master of showing, not telling; creating narrative tension and playing with the motivations of characters.
Have only watched five episodes so far. 1 and 3 are exceptional. I could write an essay on both of them. Episode 2 and 5 also had really strong and interesting messages about light and dark, the alchemy between people (ep 3) as well the toxicity of gossip and human prejudice - the impact it had on the romanoffs' relationships in the past, extrapolated into the present (ep 5).
Like mad men, this show reaches audience on multiple levels. Aside from the literal and aesthetic beauty of Paris/New York and the richness of storytelling and characters, I'm loving the more psychological/developmental question about ancestral trauma: how they may shape who we are, how we show up with others and the baggage we carry as human beings. Thought-provoking, visually spectacular and emotionally rich, this show has been a feast so far 🙏🏼 Can't wait for season 2!!!
Lucifer: Who's da New King of Hell? (2019)
The best season yet
This season was amazing. Thank you Netflix for taking this show to new heights and depths. The cast outdid their performances on previous seasons. It was so great for the show to focus more on the psychology and inner lives of the characters, while bringing more of the theological aspects/tensions to the forefront of the story as well. Loved the funny moments, the saucy moments - loved that each character was struggling with something central to their being throughout the season. Bravo Netflix! Can't wait to see where the show goes in season 5 - I feel like they have opened new doors and the sky really is the limit from here (literally) ❤
