They Look Like People (2015)
Very slow burn but worth it
I'm actually pretty surprised this movie wasn't more of a hit. It's definitely very slow paced but I can tolerate most slow paced movies. For me it did a great job of succeeding in what I think its intention was - made me think for sure I had it figured out, then had me questioning everything. Another reason I liked it was because it seemed low budget - made it feel more real. Literally most of the movie takes place in a bachelor's apartment and in a dingy basement. I thought the acting was just right, the characters felt like everyday people you could actually know in real life. This movie definitely left an impression on me.
Gone in the Night (2022)
Give it a chance
Only spoiler is at the very end, because people are saying they didn't "get" the ending - it was pretty clear to me...
Amazon auto-played this after another John Gallagher Jr (swoon) movie I watched ended. I was crocheting and needed background noise and the very start had me like okay, it's a scary movie? Go on...
I loved the cut scenes - loved the "omg, then what happened?" feel of this movie.
IMO - very, very underrated movie. It's very original. I'm sad this didn't make it to theaters? Maybe it did, I don't get out much 😆 The ending? Here is my spoiler:
Winona said to Dermot "so you're saying... after all this, I get my own cabin in the woods?" She's defeated the bad guys, she's the good guy, she's gonna go alert authorities maybe but THEN - she goes back into the cabin, opens the window, sticks her face out - this is HER cabin now. She went through all that, she got her cabin in the woods. (As a 40yo woman I understood the ending immediately.)
Give it a chance, seriously. Again I'm said this didn't get recognition.
The Cheshire Murders (2013)
Interesting perspective
Whether we want to admit it or not, we all watch these types of documentaries wondering more about the perpetrators of the crimes. Why? How? Etc... I found it very interesting that the folks behind this doc chose to spend the first bit of time focused on the victims and their friends and family, then chose to focus on the suspects - to try and answer the why and how. (They even interviewed one of the suspect's daughter, who interestingly became a police officer.) What they did was HORRIBLE. So who were they? Why did they do it? How did it come to this? We all wonder this and for anyone to be shocked that this doc focuses so much on the perpetrators is silly - we're all morbidly curious, otherwise we wouldn't be watching this kinda stuff. EVERY good true crime doc/film/series focuses on the perpetrators, it's sad when bad things happen to good people but we all wonder why bad people do the things they do.
Clickbait (2021)
Overacting, way to "intense" to actually get into.
I'm only on the second episode, watching now just because it's comically overacted. I guess to be fair to the actors the director probably called for a cut and asked, "Can you do that again, but like - a hundred times angrier? You're FURIOUS, okay? Aaaaaand action! ...CUT! ANGRIER!!"
"I THOUGHT WE AGREED TO GET MOM A BREAK MAKER?!!" "Oh, why don't you have another drink?! GET OUTTA MY HOUSE - GET OUTTA MY LIFE!!" No one acts like this - well, maybe this family does but we get no backstory before sister's absolutely furious brother bought Mom a planter instead of a bread maker. Everyone's screaming 9/10ths of the episode then everyone's laid back whispering - guess the frantic shouting at each other and running around tired them out.
Then Mom finds out her son is missing, there's a video of him bloody and probably about to get murdered and she's casually baking cookies or something, telling her daughter, "Why didn't you tell me? I'm his mother, I have a right to know." So overacting, then underacting.
All-in-all this could've been done way better. I'll keep it on as background noise while I crochet 😆🍷
In the Heights (2021)
1st time back to the theater in nearly 2 years...
...and what a perfect movie to come back to! We've now seen Hamilton an embarrassing number of times, and we've been listening to the In the Heights Broadway soundtrack for nearly a year in anticipation of this movie. (Now to watch In the Heights an embarrassing number of times on HBO - we could have watched it tonight at home but I've been craving the theater experience and want this movie to do well at the box office.)
My husband choked on his Coke because he was laughing so hard at Chris Jackson's cameo. Anthony Ramos NAILED Usnavy. And of course, LOVE Lin Manuel Miranda, such crazy beautiful talent! I only wish we could convince all of our non musical-loving friends and family to give Miranda's shows a chance.
Emelie (2015)
Great acting!
The kids are the stars of this movie - sometimes with kid actors you're caught rolling your eyes and suffering through it. Such good actors!
Very decent plot, very decent ending. I'm quarantined (like many others) right now, and just when I thought I'd run outta good movies or shows to binge, I thought eh why not - it did NOT disappoint.
I'm picky about my thrillers, so I find most of these lower reviews unfair. Give it a chance :)
Joker (2019)
Just saw it today, gonna go see it again tomorrow
LOVE the theme of this movie - mental illness, with a side of "kill the rich." The violence might be a little hard for some to watch, but it's only a few scenes and the violence is pretty brief.
Seriously, just give Juaquin ALL THE AWARDS - what an amazing performance. Interesting that the critics are 50/50 on this and the actual audience is loving it.
Mother! (2017)
Easily the most intense move I've ever seen
Holy. Crap. I am shaken - mentally, and even physically. This is my first IMDb review, in part because I can't believe the negative reviews. Anxious (good word to describe my current state) to check back once it's widely released. The first half of the movie, I believe, is intended to get you riled. By the second half, if you're like me, you're trying to figure it out - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?! - and when you get it, you won't stop thinking about it. What a masterpiece. Here, take all my money - I'll definitely go back... once I've calmed down!
