Gifted (2017)
Great story with heart.
Again reading some of the reviews here I really wonder whether I watched the same film!
Not going to repeat the story like so many others as it's in the listing :-)
The acting though especially Mckenna Grace is really very good. She is an absolute star and superbly "gifted" at what she does here, like many things she has done. Perfect casting.
The chemistry between the two main characters is spot on and their interactions believable throughout. Definitely a film with bags of heart that flushes the tear ducts at times too. Definitely has you feeling and caring for the characters so not much more to ask from any film or story well told.
Sit down without distractions and enjoy. Great film.
65 (2023)
Better than the ratings suggest.
As is typical for good films there are far too many poor reviews of what really is an enjoyable well done action sc-fi flick. Almost did not bother to watch it, but so glad I did.
Adam Driver is just superb in this. Plus Ariana Greenblatt is also excellent. Great casting choice. What's with the negative reviews, it's just weird, people seem so hard to please. This film has got the lot. The camera work builds suspense and delivers the action brilliantly. The effects are at the level expected and the sets lighting and sound are all excellent.
Almost gave this a 10 but for me I would have liked a more detailed ending although you are left to imagine the likely outcome without giving anything away.
Definitely recommend watching this. Overall excellent film.
Time Trap (2017)
Great sci-fi story. Really enjoyed it.
The film makers did a great job here. Proper sci-fi with nice characters and a good effects. To me this is what sci-fi should do and allow you ponder where not everything needs explaining in tiny detail. The story was very well structured, nicely paced and with good dialog. Acting was good and all the characters were likeable and not over done. Nothing dumb done by any character which is a rare treat.
I definitely got more than I expected from this and the ending was very satisfying.
If you like time travel themes this is for you. The budget for this was not massive but that in no way shows in the production quality. It shows what can be done as long as everything else is good.
Overall a very good film well worth the time spent.
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
Very good. Worth a watch.
The Midwich Cuckoos is a well-made and suspenseful adaptation of John Wyndham's classic sci-fi horror novel. The series follows the residents of a small English village who are mysteriously impregnated by an alien force. The resulting children, who are all born on the same day, are soon revealed to be anything but ordinary.
The series is beautifully shot, with the lush English countryside providing a perfect backdrop for the story's eerie goings-on. The cast is also excellent, with Aisling Loftus giving a standout performance as Zoe Moran. Max Beesley as Paul Haynes is also well cast and does a fine job.
The Midwich Cuckoos is a slow-burning thriller that builds suspense gradually but effectively. The series has a few unanswered questions, and the viewer is left guessing until the very end about the true nature of the alien children.
While the series does not reinvent the wheel, it is a faithful and well-made adaptation of Wyndham's novel. Fans of the book will be pleased with the way the story has been brought to life, and newcomers to the story will find it to be a creepy and suspenseful watch.
The child actors are all excellent, and they bring a sense of menace and otherworldliness to their roles.
The ending is satisfying albeit a bit predictable.
Overall, I would highly recommend The Midwich Cuckoos to fans of sci-fi, horror, and suspense. It is a well-made and suspenseful series that unlike many leaves you satisfied and not really requiring a sequel.
As a foot note. For a great film adaptation of this novel a must see is the 1960 film Village of the damned.
Greenland (2020)
Better than I expected.
First of all some outstanding heartfelt performances from the main cast especially the young boy played by Roger Dale Floyd. The writing is well structured and believable. Direction, cinematography and practical effects are on point certainly not over done.
This is as described a very human film showing the despair and very possible human responses to impending doom which shows all sides good and evil.
Some reviews here expect more than what is required when the main point is to focus on the emotions of what it might be like to be faced with likely annihilation. The film does a great job in this regard, yes it's all been done before but so have so many ideas in film, who really cares, that's entertainment. This one is better than many with a similar theme.
Worth a watch without distractions.
The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023)
TWD is back!
Absolutely brilliant so far.
Let's go to a place totally overrun with Zombies... Great, just what you need from a worthy spin off to TWD.
The dynamic between the two main characters with Maggie showing contempt and yet reliance on Negan is fun to watch. The chemistry between these characters is so brilliantly done by both actors. So great to now see Negan return to the character that carried the previous show so many times. One of the best scenes so far in episode 2.
The writers have finally returned us to what most loved best about TWD. Many fans of the original show agree that it lost its way in later seasons. It seems that this show will bring us back to what made early TWD so brilliant.
The set design is superb with great direction, lighting and cinematography. The script is nicely layered with no wasted dialog so far.
If you are a fan of the original early TWD you should love this show well worth your time.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
A masterpiece from any angle.
Honestly have to wonder when reading some reviews here if they were watching the same film as me.
Without any doubt the best of all John Wick. A masterpiece of entertainment. Cinematography from Dan Laustsen is just incredible. This with some great Directing from Chad Stahelski and well paced and considered dialog. Some great lines delivered well from a great cast. This has to be one film to see more than once, just to take a second look at the brilliant fight scenes. Incredible work by so many on this film.
You get what you expect from John Wick and then some in spades. This for me, the most fun watching one of the best action films made to date. Don't miss it. Brilliant from beginning to end.
Andor (2022)
True Star Wars
Up to ESP12.
This show is perfection. The writing is outstanding. Acting from all the cast is superb in every scene. Cinematography is spot on without over use of CGI. There is nothing in my view that could make this better.
If you liked Rogue One you will like this.
This is true Star Wars where you are drawn into the struggle and fight with oppression with ordinary people not just mystical beings.
Whoever is in charge at Disney keep these writers doing what they do best and create season 2. This show deserves to be a classic loved by any true Star Wars fan for generations to come. Well done to all involved.
