Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
The Movie Sucks
I knew it would be bad, I tried to turn my brain off but i felt it turning into Mash Potato
1) The CGI is...not amazing. The physics are rough to watch, the animation is odd, all of it's just weird to look at. Hollywood rushed CGI job
2) The writing is horrendous. "Godzilla is fighting other titans to protect us" 10 seconds later they're launching missiles and attacking it. The script it awful.
3) Contrived stereotypes, forced characters. "Oh look, it's the zany brave cowboy who plays 80's tunes
4) Doesn't make any sense. There's no logistical consistency to anything. "There's a warning signal we think, better send a scientist, mute girl, civilian because he really wants to go, and a vet. Big energy wave nearly shuts their ship down and crash "they're getting stronger, let's go towards it! They have 1 security guy who's fat, over 60 and more 1 dimensional that a crap British boyband.
5) The cinematography straight up sucks. The only thing these films need to do is give us big monsters and mindless fights. Giant monsters, but it's got this weird combination of impossible camera angles, which gives you no sense of scale so it looks like 1 badly animated normal gorilla fighting another, with a combination of badly zoomed, fake shaky camera like it's been filmed with an over the shoulder cam, it's a lazy attempt to immerse you and take some of the cgi'ness out, but filmed at 150ft. So it doesn't make any sense. It's just bad, and not even mindless fun.
The only way to enjoy the previous movies is sit with friends, talk through all the human bits and "story" then stop and collectively go "Big monkey with an axe, sick" There's moments in the other films that are great and worth slogging through to get, but not this one.
The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart (2023)
Don't be sad that it ended
Such a criminally under the radar show, it's so niche and unusual, and lasted through my child, teenage and now full adult years. I believe it's one of the last traditionally animated shows, it's only gotten better over time and this is no exception. It picks right up where it left off, the voice acting as always is on point and it solves as many questions as it asks, leaving me hopeful it can be picked up somewhere else. One of the all time great animated shows just waiting to go viral.
If you've never seen the Venture Bros, I highly recommend you start. The earliest season is a bit rough with the animation and it hasn't found it's footing, but still hilarious and sets up storylines that are still evolving. There are always 2 venture bros, is this a universal constant? What other secrets are lurking in Jonas venture's checkered past? What's next? Hopefully something, it's a nostalgia riddled modern show filled with topical references based on a love of 60's cartoons and pop culture.
