Aquaman (2018)
Really good movie!
Plot has a little of King Arthur/Sword in the Stone, a little Indiana Jones & and a lot of Avenger type materiel. Movie is vIsually stunning. CGI Is incredible. Director Wan is newest "hero" of the genre. Role was made for Momoa and Momoa was made for this role. Kidman was believably queenly. Wilson's performance was valiant - even though he typically comes across as the nice guy from next door. A thoroughly enjoyable movie experience. Plan to take my grandchildren to see it with me for a second viewing!
Hell or High Water (2016)
Really good movie
One of the better movies I've seen from 2016 offerings. Storyline was just active enough to keep viewers attention but still maintained the slower pace of a typical hot & dusty western . Acting was really good - not surprising from Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine or Ben Foster but was equally good from Gil Birmingham, Katie Mixon and Dale Dickey. Dialogue between the two Texas Rangers was hilarious, believable and exactly what would/should transpire between two mature Texas lawmen who have worked together for a long time. Cinematography was so good that I felt the hot, flat dusty west Texas terrain like I was sitting right out on the blacktop of one of those long flat roads where you can see in any direction for many miles. I can certainly see why the Foreign Press nominated this movie for a Golden Globe award. Nice to see such a good movie being dedicated to director David Mackenzie's parents.
A Kind of Murder (2016)
Could have been better
Expected more plot, action and/or suspenseful dialogue. Did not read the book and now I do not want to since movie dragged from very beginning. Script was slow and very predictable throughout. Wilson and Biel did a good job with the limited characters they portrayed. Marsan did a really good job playing the creepy guy that you really wanted to be guilty. Haley Bennett has some pipes on her. Detective character would have been much more believable using an older, more mature actor. Most entertaining parts of the movie were all the 60's things - the wardrobes, sets (particularly the Stackhouse residence), and the pervasive smoking. Having attained adulthood in the 60s I was impressed with the accuracy of all the design aspects. It was a good idea to set this movie during a snowy winter - helped some with attempt at film "noir" effects. Was worth rental fee just to see the clothes.
The Hollow Point (2016)
Very good movie
Realistic, frightening, gritty movie - unfortunately based on a real current topic/threat/situation. Movie visuals were stunning. Scenes of dusty roads, rusted trucks showed a pretty realistic view of life in a small border town. Somewhat of a cross between an old western with a good dose of modern day reality. Acting was good enough to make you forget that these guys are only playing characters to tell a story. a story. Patrick Wilson, Ian McShane and James Belushi were very good portraying good and bad sides of their characters. John Leguizamo was terrifying. I cannot understand why this movie was given only a limited release. It should have received a theater release to mass markets. Very good movie.
