A young man's fascinating and complex journey to find himself
1 June 2016
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote and starred in the film, "Good Will Hunting" which put them on the map in Hollywood. Matt Damon plays Will Hunting a brilliant young man working as a janitor at MIT in Boston. One day while cleaning he stumbles upon a equation that had been given to graduate students as a challenge. He is able to solve the problem and gains the interest of a professor. Even though Will is brilliant he is from a poor part of the Boston suburbs and has some trouble with the law. After an altercation with a police officer the professor tries to help Will achieve his potential by steering him in the right direction. As part of the deal Will must see a therapist played by Robin Williams. During therapy sessions Will learns about himself and deals with his past. Along the way he falls in love and struggles to determine what is important to him. The acting in this film is superb. Robin Williams won the academy award for best supporting actor. This film also won an Oscar for best writing screenplay. I love this film because it showcases the complexity of life and ones life is made up of choices.

Confirmation (2016 TV Movie)

Thrilling Political Drama
1 May 2016
The HBO film, "Confirmation" documents the grueling events of Judge Clarence Thomas' US Supreme Court confirmation hearings. For a young person that is not as familiar with the history behind his confirmation to the US Supreme Court this film was very shocking and very upsetting. Before watching this movie I did not know about all of the controversy that surrounded his nomination and I had never heard of Anita Hill. When President Bush nominated Thomas (Wendell Pierce) to replace Thurgood Marshall the nation was overall convinced that he would be confirmed by the Senate. However when Anita Hill (Kerry Washington) is asked to come forward to with her testimony of sexual harassment against Thomas the chaos begins. The director Rick Famuyiwa includes news clips that were live during the hearings which enhances the audiences' experience. The news clips make the viewers feel as if the hearings are taking place now. Also this film includes many behind the scenes looks into what occurred without the public's knowledge and it is very disturbing. I would recommend this film because of the outstanding acting and the important message.

The Big Short (2015)
10/10
Intense dramatic comedy
31 March 2016
"The Big Short" is a unique perspective of the 2008 financial crisis in the USA expressed from the point of view of the few people who actually predicted the crash. This film presents an alternate and unfamiliar view of a tragic event that all Americans experienced. Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt make the seemingly insane decision to bet against the housing market because they figure out that it is crumbling and is so corrupt. Ryan Gosling narrators how this discovery was made and how these few people were able to profit off of a devastating event for so many people. The language in this film is advanced and includes many complicated business acronyms. However to ensure that everyone could understand and relate to the film the director, Adam McKay creates comic relief. When a new complicated concept was introduced the camera cuts to a celebrity (Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez etc.) who then explains the concept in simpler terms. Also Ryan Gosling's narration provides comic relief amidst the confusing and complicated plot. I believe that this film is not only creative and intriguing, more importantly it is the untold story of the corrupt economy in our country. This film forces viewers to become more critical and careful in their financial decisions.

A hysterical family drama.
24 February 2016
In the movie "This is Where I Leave You" the Altman children (Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll, and Adam Driver) gather in their childhood home to see out their father's final wishes following his passing. They are forced to live under one roof again with their mother (Jane Fonda). In their small hometown the children run into people of their past that they have grown apart from. Each member of the Altman family grieves in their own way and they come to important realizations along the way.

Throughout the film the audience laughs and cries with the Altmans as they try and find their way after devastating news. This film incorporates well-know family drama, characters, and relationships that the viewers can relate to. Many viewers have experienced the death of a loved one and are able to find many similarities between the Altmans and their own families. I really enjoyed this film because I felt that it represented family dynamics in a small town perfectly. Also the actors make the audience feel apart of the family so much that the viewer thinks that they are going through the characters' journey with them. I would definitely recommend this movie for anyone that is looking for a funny film filled with loads of family drama.
