The Big Ugly (2020)
Waste of talent
Wow, what a load of rubbish. 3 old duffers and a few hillbillies running around with the flimsiest of plots. Spoiled kid drugs and rapes girls, spoiled kid is killed...good. Gangsters, Mob bosses? Nothing to do with the story. Malcolm McDowell and Vinnie Jones portraying cockney geezers with the most appalling accents, made this Londener laugh. Just what do Americans think we are like, cor blimey luvaduck.
We should expect more from McDowell and Perlman. Vinnie Jones, never could act, but is good as the comedic hard man, which he wasn't here, just kept getting slapped about from some skinny guy. Why did they do it?
Child 44 (2015)
Not what I expected
This is set in an Orwellian early twentieth century Soviet Russia. That fact gave this run of the mill police investigation some real depth. Not really much of a story, but it played out very well. Great cast, great acting.
The Furies (2019)
What was that about?
Great film. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I have no idea what was going on. There have been several films about people being hunted, normally for the pleasure weird billionaires. I haven't a clue who benefited from this hunt though. This is different. Don't be put off by my view on the plot, if you like wierdness give it a go.
Ad Astra (2019)
Slow going, but great
Comparisons have been made with Apocalypse Now and 2001 A Space Odyssey, I'm not so sure about the latter, but definitely Apocalypse. Just swap the river for space. Brad almost seems to be deliberately mimicking Martin Sheen. Despite it being a dead ringer in my eyes, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the Evil at the end of the journey a bit lacking though.
Martyrs (2015)
Shocking
I'm glad that I watched this before I read the reviews. I haven't seen the original French version that other critics refer to. I thought that this was okay, very gory and at times hard to watch. I love gory films and this one actually, literally made my toes curl. Okay, so truthfully I think think great reveal was a load of nonsense, but it was an okay way to spend a wet English evening. Give it a go.
Hereditary (2018)
Dull
Maybe I'm a bit of a dullard.
I have no idea what this was about. It was dark, as in, I couldn't see much and the characters were all nutters. After 3 days I finally got to the great reveal; "all hail King Paimon". Oh right, that explains it all...not.
Shookum Hills (2021)
Dark
Dark as in ' can't see a bloody thing'. A truck with headlights and a light bar that light up nothing, torches that do nothing, houseliights that do nothing and...well, you get the picture, oh no wait, you don't because it's dark! I'm going to make a film like this; set my camera on audio only and make some funny noises while mumbling incoherently. I tried, I really tried to finish it. I switched off 20 mins before the end. I didn't know who anyone was anyway.
Justice League (2017)
Great fun
What a silly film, I mean it's for kids isn't it? Well this 59 year old male loved every minute of it. Total escapism, forget all your troubles and put this on...loud, very loud.
Bad Blood (2017)
Fantastic
Really enjoyed this. I was bereft when it ended. If you like rise and fall criminal empire movies, you'll love this.
VFW (2019)
Dark
It sounded like a great movie, but it was so dark that I couldn't see a bloody thing. Maybe I need a super expensive television.
Bite (2015)
Nonsense, but fun
Okay it's not Shakespeare, it's called "Bite". What do you expect from such a title? Bloody, slimey, disgusting and retch inducing. Elements of "The Fly" and Kafka's "Metamorphosis" just not as cerebral. Watch it, have a laugh and say "yuk!"
A Single Shot (2013)
Dark...too right
Every scene was in the dark. Man, these people live in the dark. Sounded like it maybe was a good movie, but I'll never know as I couldn't see a bloody thing. If you've got a state of the art super home cinema set up, you'll probably enjoy it. Us lesser mortals will struggle.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Poor old Gene!
What the hell is this about? I'm on S2 e6. I am trying so hard with this series. The writing is all over the place. Someone gets killed off, "Oh dear, we need them back" No problem they just come back to Life, simples. Maybe the writers all write in isolation so every episode has to be adapted to suit the episode's particular writer. Completely destroyed the franchise. I'm not trying anymore, pass me the delete series button.
Gene must be spinning in his grave, oh wait, let's bring him back to life!
We Were Soldiers (2002)
The film to end all wars
What an emotional roller coaster. I am not a military man and can only imagine the fear and desperation of being in this situation. The bravery of the wives is so well portrayed, it had me welling up. So much better for no over use of CGI. I was exhausted at it's end. So much more informative than those other more famous blockbusters.
I thank all of you for your bravery and your service ( from a Brit).
I recommend the excellent book as well.
Silencer (2018)
Get a hearing aid!
Mumble mumble grunt! I have no idea what was going on. Took me 3 days to watch it, I didn't care what happened so never finished it. Don't bother.
Apostle (2018)
Bad light!
I think maybe that this is a good film. However I do not own a super TV and on my 32" Sony Bravia which is a few years old I couldn't see a thing. The majority of the film takes place in the dark and I couldn't see a thing. So I would say that unless you have a super TV and are prepared to sit in a darkened room, don't bother. Shame, the acting sounded great.
Out of the Furnace (2013)
Great film, plot annoyed me!
Why does the bad guy kill our two heroes in the first place?
Why does the good guy go to all the trouble to successfully find the bad guy only to forget the drugs? A bit of a giveaway that.
Why does good guy not ask cop, "How did he die?" When the cop says ".. your brother is dead"? If he'd fallen in the river drunk, then he wouldn't have to bother with the whole retribution thing!
Why does Mr Bigshot bad guy live in a crappy rat house slum?
Why does the good guy lure the bad guy to the club and not kill him in the car park? Could've saved a life!
Oh, and do you really need a telescopic sight to shoot a guy in a club or from a few places away?
Great acting, great cast. Just that these little things niggle.
Watch it. Good movie.
