Gilligan's Island: Splashdown (1967)
Good Episode...
This is a decent episode- You have to remember that in the mid 60s Space travel was a very big thing. As far as some of the "Mistakes" that the episode has in it; 1) Although trying to send a signal around the curvature of the Earth to Hawaii or such is difficult, direct line-of-sight is easier in some situations(Spacecraft directly above the island). 2) Loss of signal during attempted contact- the space craft traveled far enough around the Earth in orbit that they were too far away for the Professor's system to reach. And C) The spacecraft that landed on the island was NOT the one carrying the astronauts- it was the EMPTY one they were going to rendezvous with- that is why the astronauts were not on board.....Might help to actually watch the whole episode and pay attention!
The Land Unknown (1957)
Really good movie- but Terrible T-rex!
This was supposed to be a big budget "A" list movie, but the studio heads suddenly cut the budget, so....The matte paintings are wonderful, the technical stuff about the Helo is well done (I work on helos) and the acting is good. The one fly in the ointment is the T-Rex...It is absolutely terrible (Barney looks more realistic) I wish that someone would take this movie and just insert a more credible T-Rex digitally(I will state here that the 'Rex's eyes blink which is kind of freaky). Also, I really like that they never ID what put them in their situation....Too often, these movies give you a pat answer as to the origin of the creature/disaster...in reality, it takes years to decades to figure out what the cause is (in disasters)...
WKRP in Cincinnati: Venus and the Man (1981)
Very good episode about teaching teens....
So, obviously, this is a good episode that allows Tim Reid to fill out Venus' characterization. The only drawback to the whole episode is that Keny Long just looks too old to be a 16 year old- He does a great job though.
The other reviewer here is a teacher and likes this episode for obvious reasons...I have a little thing I use to teach "Teenagers" that they don't "Know it all"...
I am an Aircraft buff and know a lot about aerodynamics, So I take two sheets of paper and ask the teen, "What will happen if I hold these from the top 2 inches apart vertically, and then blow down between them?" They invariably state "They will go outward!" And then, to their surprise, they come closer together! The Venturi effect...It tends to really get them. It is a great eye-opener!
Teens know all about their Smartphones and video games and the latest slang, so they "Know they are smarter than there elders"....."No you are not!"
Tremors: Water Hazard (2003)
Good episode in a good series
I really like the Tremors franchise- the last couple of movies are not quite as good.but the TV series was very good if short-lived (SYFY decided it did not appeal to their audience)
This episode appears to take a lot of inspiration from an old "B" movie from 1957; "The Monster that Challenged the World"; Giant mollusks are released by an earthquake in the Salton Sea- at one point some making their way thru a series of canals. The two stories definitely seem related.
How I Met Your Mother: Last Forever: Part Two (2014)
Real life is not a fairytale
I started watching this show in 2011...but off and on.....And then I saw the episode "Bad News".... I was laughing so hard I looked like I was having a seizure! And then the end of that episode.....I had tears in my eyes; I had lost my father to Alzheimer's only a year before. I watched this show religiously from then on.
Some people get really upset when this show hits you with a sad or bitter-sweet ending.... I actually liked that! Strangely, I am one of those people who gets PO'd at Sitcoms "Tackling important issues".... But this show took a different....tack.
I dripped tears over the ending in this episode.... But what happened is what tends to happen in real life.....
Think about this; Why did he spend so much time telling the kids about how he met their mother?>>>>>Obviously, because their mother was no longer around!
Is it sad? Of course!.....But it is like real life. You should stop wishing for a perfect fairy tale and enjoy this ending.... It was as beautiful as anything I have seen or heard........
Titus: Tommy's Not Gay (2001)
Deserved an Emmy
This episode is one of the better Titus episodes(They are all good, but some are great!) Tommy is Titus's good friend who has certain feminine tendencies, and finally faces his(And everyone elses) "Fears"....The whole episode takes place in a bar, and deals with homophobia on the surface(In Typically hilarious Titus fashion) but also, in the bigger picture, with all of our biases.....The ending, though, is absolutely superlative....I can understand that the show Titus was not everyone's cup of tea, but this one episode really should have received some recognition- Along with, possibly, the episode "The Protector"- That one deals with the worst possible crime that can be committed. I have found, though, that some people can not watch this show- because it hits too close to home- Something to consider.
