Captain Fantastic (2016)
"Captain Fantastic" - Weird for weirdness' sake
The Good:
- Beautiful movie visually.
- Good acting. I'm sure the actors did it just as Matt Ross intended, for better or for worse. Whichever case, the actors did the best with what they had.
- Quite entertaining most of the time.
The Bad:
- Weird for weirdness' sake. Yes, I know that the family portrayed in "Captain Fantastic" is MEANT to be weird. It's the whole point. But writer-director takes it to a completely unbeliavable level and sacrifices all possible realism. I would also have less of a problem with the weirdness if most of it wasn't obviously meant to be gags.
- Embarrasing. Again, I understand some scenes are meant to be embarrasing, but Ross just overdoes it. I had to stop myself from skipping a couple of scenes due to the embarassment (Bo kissing the girl comes to mind).
- Again, unrealistic. Speaking of Bo and the girl, that scene really was out of nowhere, wasn't it? Writer-director Matt Ross just couldn't find a natural moment for Bo to find out he was romantically incapable instead of using the laziest and lamest trope ever?
- Disjointed. What was the point of the children living at the grandparents' house?
- "Captain Fantastic" is a drawn out movie. The story could've easily been told in 75min.
- Predictable dialogue. I found myself at least five times KNOWING what was gonna be said next, because the "youngest kid asks what something vulgar is and the dad explains it like it's nothing" gag is used around that many times.
_
All in all, I would not recommend Matt Ross' "Captain Fantastic". It is a pretentious, disjointed collection of scenes that are so obnoxiously trying to make you laugh or make you sad that none of it becomes funny, and none of it resonates with you.
"Captain Fantastic" - 3.5/10.
BoJack Horseman: Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos (2018)
If every "normal" episode was like this...
Let's just say that if every normal episode ("normal" being an episode that isn't the infamous episode 11, a season finale or an experimental artistic expression like "Free Churro" or "Fish Out of Water") was this engaging, funny, dynamic and emotional, BoJack Horseman would definitely be my favorite sitcom.
BoJack Horseman: It's You (2016)
A strong main plot that depends on dumbing down the other plots
"It's You" succeeds in progressing the main plot about the titular character, and Princess Carolyn's, but shows flaws with the remaining main cast's stories.
The episode's biggest problem, as often in "BoJack Horseman", is the character of Diane Nguyen - I just simply can't really figure out how the audience is "supposed" to feel for her right now. Is she the audience manifested as a character, asking the bizarre remaining cast the questions we have (as seen in "Brrap Brrap Pew Pew"), or is she just a female version of BoJack with constant one-liners about how flawed society is? And those remarks-- are we supposed to laugh at them, be amazed by their intelligence, or simply feel like we're getting to know Diane through her words...? Because they are very seldom funny, and the water at the restaurant scene is one of the unfunniest and confusing scenes I've seen in this show.
With that said, "It's You" does indeed succeed with its main plot about BoJack. The episode sees BoJack unexpectedly failing in even getting nominated for an Oscar, and that leading to Todd Chavez finally giving him a reality check and breaking himself free from just being "the stoner character who's too dumb to care about how people treat him" type.
"It's You" - 7/10: Good with Margin
