Once Upon a Time (2011)
Started off Promising But Quickly Lost its Way
This show started off great because it had mystery. It was so interesting to see each character unfold...
I love the portrayal of the evil queen, but her path to redemption has been poorly done. I blame this mostly on the writers, who seem to favor her character too much and have given a blind eye to her past misdeeds. Her romance with Robin Hood is the worst on the show because of their lack of chemistry and his inconsistent personality. Not to mention, why pick such a homely actor to be the sexy evil queen's boyfriend? Certainly she could do better.
Emma Swan was also a good character in the beginning because of her strong, no-nonsense, independent personality. Then the show took a turn for the worst by shoving her zero-chemistry romance with Captain Hook in our face. Okay, perhaps they have chemistry but her flirtations with Pinocchio, Graham and Neal were far more interesting...
Snow White aka Mary Margaret was also a great character that got sidelined in Season 4 and beyond. Her character was kick-ass in seasons 1 and 2 but became this whiny woman who dressed in grandma's wardrobe in Season 4 and beyond. If I was Ginnifer Goodwin I would be uncomfortable with the evolution of my character. Some people think Ginnifer is a terrible actress, and while she may not be the best, is certainly not given great writing to work with.
Prince Charming aka David, is one of the weaker links of the show because of the actor's boring performance. I guess Prince Charming is a pretty vanilla character, but seriously give this guy more edge, please...and why couldn't they have chosen a hotter guy?
Rumplestiltskin aka Mr. Gold, is one of the highlights of this show. His character's background is interesting and you root for him despite his many flaws. His relationship with Belle was at first interesting but soon felt unnatural.
All in all, this show has strayed off the path it initially was on. I liked the mystery, the focus on the main characters story lines, and the intrigue of the first season. The emphasis on the forced romances that now occur on the show has detracted from the main idea of feisty independent women kicking ass alongside or against men.
I understand that things have to change for shows to stay on air, but this is not the way to go.
House Broken (2010)
If you have a bad day, this is a great movie
OK, granted, this is a silly juvenile movie, but it has a nice underlying message. If you want something that is light and feel-good on a rainy day, this is a good pick. If you are intolerant of sophomoric, slightly gross-out humor, this is probably not for you.
Two blonde guys in their mid to late twenties still live with their parents somewhere in southern California. They are unemployed and have aspired to be independent filmmakers, but this does not provide much or any income. They are completely oblivious and have no responsibility whatsoever. Their friends are equally immature. After recently retiring as fireman, their father begins to notice his sons are complete spoiled brats (I wonder if he ever realized this before). He hits a breaking point after noticing they've drank nearly all his beer and their friend let the dog pee on the furniture without cleaning it. He then devises a plan to force them to grow up, so he packs the Winnebago and tell his wife they are going to breakfast, but is really taking her camping so she can't interfere. He turns off the utilities and takes all the food with him. What happens next is a rather unconventional ride but nonetheless entertaining.
Kudos go to Danny Devito, who plays the annoyed, recently retired fireman dad who must force his sons to grow up and move out, and to Katey Sagal, who plays the role of coddling mother perfectly.
New Girl (2011)
Contains Spoilers - New Girl Has its Moments But is Limited
This is a character-driven show about nothing. Nearly all of the episodes revolve around Jess's problems which is annoying because she would be some much better as a side character...I enjoy this show because of Schmidt and most of all because of Nick. Coach and Winston are the most irritating of the bunch, and Cece needs a more fleshed-out personality.
I loved the chemistry between Nick and Jess, but when they became a couple it lost some appeal. I do hope they get back together at some point, though. It was definitely one of the more intriguing romances on TV...and I am not a big rom-com fan.
It would improve if Nick or Jess moved out of the apartment, but then the show wouldn't be New Girl would it?
All in all, this show has some funny moments (if you are into awkward humor), mostly in season 1 and 2, but the premised is limited.
