Dynasties: Painted Wolf (2018)
It's hard to choose.
I knew I would love this series, but as I watch each episode it gets harder to choose which one(s) I like more than the others. Every episode slowly draws you in so you end up caring what happens to members of the family. I thought it would be the lion episode because I have a soft spot for them, but fantastic as it was I would put it in last place so far. This episode about the two painted dogs/wolves packs was simply superb and on a par with the chimp episode as far as tension goes. Following the two packs was like watching a brutal soap opera and the expertise of the crew was clear to see. For me the chimp episode was the most violent, but this episode was the most gruesome and hard to watch (I turned away two or three times) and I expect there will be complaints about it being before the watershed (in the UK). As far as I'm concerned the more realistic this kind of programme is, the more seriously people will become about the plight of all wildlife, not just endangered species like the painted dogs/wolves. Absolutely a 10/10 episode.
Drowning in Plastic (2018)
If you only watch one documentary this year, please make it this one.
If you think you know we should be recycling plastic or using less plastic products, then you also need to know the sheer scale of the problem across the planet. We go on about not using plastic bags and single use bottles, or campaigning to stop the use of plastic straws. Well, that's just a drop in the ocean. Literally. I GUARANTEE 99.9% of people watching this programme will completely unaware of the scale of the effect of plastic on this planet.
This documentary does not show lots of cute animals or creatures in distress, just a couple at most. That's not the point of the programme. The makers don't want to make viewers switch channels. They want them to watch the whole thing and then, if not proactive in helping to make things better, then to at least be more aware of the choices they make.
For years the focus has been on climate change. For the vast majority of people this is much more urgent than climate change.
The West Wing: Two Cathedrals (2001)
Goosebumps
One of the best TV episodes of all time for raising the hairs on the back of your neck - brilliant TV and exceptional performances, especially from Martin Sheen, Kathryn Joosten and the late John Spencer! The tension builds and never dips, ending with a fantastic series cliff hanger. There is not one character I would like to see cut and each has been carefully developed since the beginning, so we know their strengths and weaknesses and still like them. Normally I hate flashbacks in a series, as it gives me the impression that the storyline wasn't thought out well from the start. That doesn't apply to 'Two Cathedrals' where so much is explained and revealed about Jed Bartlet in this episode. It is easy to forget that Martin Sheen is acting a part because he is just so believable throughout the whole episode - no wonder he was asked to run for the US Senate.
I miss this series so much - it has never been bettered. If you have never watched The West Wing then watch it from the start - you will be hooked.
Bones: The Yanks in the U.K.: Parts 1 and 2 (2008)
Give this episode a miss if you are British!
I love the Bones series, but if this had been the first episode I had watched I wouldn't have watched another.
The old 'being an American in England' plot was quite simply utter drivel.
That Mini must have been found in a museum.
From the tea versus coffee gag, to the upper class and royalty quips.
Only one English accent throughout, good old British bobbies and the Beefeater cracks...
The 'barrister's wig is weird' line and the gun bit - give me strength.
I could go on and on...and on.
Very disappointing and smacks of desperation.
Short Cuts (1993)
Thank goodness I didn't pay to see this film!
This film was so slow and boring! I rarely post comments here but this film was given 5/5 stars in the Radio Times and I'd hate someone else to go through the film like I did, waiting for something interesting to happen - because it doesn't! This film is one of those 'deep and meaningful' films that is really quite pretentious. Just because it was full of well known actors does not make it a great film.
Everybody played their roles well enough but the whole film was pointless - the inter-linking story idea has been done much better than this! The length of the film it another problem - it is over three hours long and would have fitted nicely in much less than two.
Naming the star was the best bit - that's how interesting this film gets.
If I had to pick the best performances it would be Tim Robbins as the creepy cop and Fred Ward as one of the insensitive fishermen.
Give it a wide berth unless you need help sleeping!
