The Hot Zone (2019)
A Gripping Thriller
I loved almost everything about this series, and it's hard for me to be impressed by tv shows. Usually I'm put off by one of four factors: dialogue, unconvincing character actions, bad sound direction, or boring plot. This excels in every category, and in fact I want to commend the sound direction for being one of the best I've seen in a series ever. At one point there is a phone ringing on screen, but in a location the viewer cannot see, and I was actually looking around my house in the direction the phone was ringing in the series wondering why someone had their phone turned up so loud.
I was only bored once, which is a feat since I have ADHD and get bored and distracted very easily. It isn't even a fault of the show, I just get very bored when war talk comes on, which the show delves a little bit into.
I was not familiar with the anthrax scare beyond that I knew there was one, since I was in the third grade when all of this happened. It was incredibly informative, and I occasionally found myself wanting to look everything up to see how it would end. I'm glad I didn't, do yourself a favor and don't look up any information about this series of events as they happened in real life if you didn't already know. The twist at the end is a gorgeous quilt of tragedy and finality. I actually felt bad for the 'villain' of our story.
In short, if you don't already know what happened, do yourself a favor and do some research after you've already seen the show. Tony Goldwyn and Daniel Dae Kim give some of the best performances I've seen in a while. A stunner of a series.
Malevolent (2018)
I just wanted a ghost film
Instead I get a haunted-house-turned-slasher flick, and I'm not a fan. There's a lot of needless horror movie cliches and effects, and if it weren't for the cinematography being pretty decent, I would say this film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's not often I find myself wanting to fast forward through a film, but this one was so tedious even during the action scenes that I almost turned it off. There is one scene towards the end that is pretty impactful, where the death of Jackson is unmistakable, his unblemished form seen by Angela walking casually along the roadway mere moments after he was last seen half-dead from torture. It was horrifying in a sad way, and I really appreciated that little touch of horror. The scene at the very end where Angela says she's not alone as she's shadowed by something is a very nice scene too, but other than these two scenes and the very masterful cut of the movie title in the opening sequence of the film, it's pretty meh.
Let's Be Evil (2016)
Was this supposed to be a video game?
I try not to rate a movie before I'm done watching it, but this film is so poorly paced I'm sat here reviewing it while it's playing, bored out of my gourd. The only reason this movie gets as high a review as it does is I'm a sucker for creative neon lighting. The first person shooter-esque way of filming lends itself more to a video game than a movie, and I'm certain if this had been a video game instead, it would've been much better received. There's a reason most movies are not shot as if we're looking through a VR headset.
And are the kids supposed to be demons? This movie would've done well to play the trope of super genius children turned evil instead of tacking on a few demon screams and some magic shenanigans. It starts to fall apart when the capabilities of the technology available are thrown aside for cheap jump scares and supernatural snake-makery. Why are the goggles never once used to trick the teachers? And oh, the Darby death scene just came on, and I've never seen such a fake struggle before. And why are y'all scared at the appearance of one small child alone in a room? Push her over and run in the opposite direction, my lord. I think I'll amend my rating to be lower.
This had so much potential.
Under the Skin (2013)
Incomprehensible dreck
One of the most boring films I've ever seen. Granted it has one of the most disturbing deaths I've ever seen in a movie, and an interesting mechanic for the alien to trap it's victims, it can't make up for the rest of the film. They may as well have called it 'Scarlet Johansson drives for two hours with no facial expression' and it would be an accurate film title. Backed out of it halfway. Don't bother.
