Annamalai (1992)
Great Story
The stories in Indian cinema are often rehashed versions of older ones with familiar themes and predictable conclusions. Well this movie is no different. Two childhood friends become bitter enemies as they grow into successful businessmen. Their friendship is slowly tested, strained, then broken. One is a quintessential good guy and the other is guided, like a puppet, by a malignant force. There are incoherent (out of context) song and dance numbers and cheesy fight scenes.
But what makes this film is good despite its molding. The casting is perfect for the roles and despite its technical simplicity, it does what it wants to do quite well. The narrative is beautifully constructed. The acting and dialogue may seem contrived, but this is Tamil cinema at it's finest -- trying to appeal to the masses. Don't judge this on Hollywood standards or intellectualize it like in Universities. This is archetypal Tamil cinema with a superb plot for a 1992 film. The story in itself, with adequate comedy interspersed, makes this film irresistible.
