Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Boring disappointment
What a missed opportunity. The acting, directing, and production value was good. The script was absolutely awful. No time was spent on developing Bob's character or his rise to fame. The story starts in the middle when he's already famous. It ends 3 years before his death. Almost every major event was depicted with words on the screen rather than actually telling the story through film. Any good story has a beginning, middle, and end. This one only had a middle, and even that wasn't done very well. Throughout the entire film I kept waiting for it to captivate me, and it never happened. This was one of the worst movies I've seen in several years. I actually considered walking out after 30 minutes and asking for a refund, but I expected it to improve. I should've gone with my gut. The one silver lining is the actress that plays Bob Marley's wife is really good. If she had a better script to work with this could've been a performance worthy of an award nomination, but the movie was just too bad so she will be overlooked.
Fatman (2020)
It's a satire
I think most of the people who reviewed this movie just didn't "get" it, and I can see how that could happen. To be honest, I was a little confused about where the movie was going for the first 10-15 minutes or so. My wife and I were scratching our heads a bit because the production, acting, directing, camerawork, etc., were all really well done, but it seemed so absurd. Then I had the epiphany and paused the movie. I told my wife "ok I think I get it... it's a satire. It's a comedy, but it's filmed in a serious way. The reason it's funny is because it's so absolutely absurd and ridiculous." Then we unpaused. Immediately, and for the rest of the film, we were laughing out loud. I think if you like South Park's twisted humor, you will love this movie. It's unlike any other Christmas movie I've ever seen, and it's totally hilarious in the strangest way.
Swan Song (2021)
And?
It is enjoyable, but it falls well short of its potential. The acting, direction, cinematography, all good. The script, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. There are no surprises. No twists, no turns. There's really no possible way to 'spoil' this movie, because there isn't anything about it to spoil. There are some very good things about this movie. The futuristic technology is believable, very cool, and plays a major role in the movie, but succeeds to remain somewhat understated at the same time. The premise of the story is interesting, but the finished product delivers a quite underwhelming experience. The character development started off nice but was cut short, only to yield extra time for an unnecessarily drawn-out 2nd act, before ultimately falling flat at the end. This movie is proof that you can't make a good movie with a poor script. They did everything they could and failed. That said, it was still more interesting than the average flick, so I give it a 6/10.
