Painkiller (2023)
Moving story about the opioid crisis and big pharma
First, I haven't seen Dopesick yet and I know many others have and compare. I thought Painkiller was an incredibly moving film and the actors did a phenomenal job portraying their roles. If you like FNL then you'll notice some classic Peter Berg directing in this.
If you're familiar with the world of pharma then you know they did their research and used the right language on some of what goes on behind the scenes from the marketing and comms perspective.
Some strong uses of symbolism throughout the film, from the brutish dog of Sackler's and the shiny, happy plush pills that are meant to mask the menace, to the fire alarm.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Really long and the story is all over the place
First I'll preface with I see what they were striving for but the story is all over the place, so it's hard to watch them flounder to get us there. We flip between characters allowing for little development or depth. Leaving us with a who cares. The relationships feel surface & a bit artificial, which is such a difference from the first movie so a huge disappointment. Especially as it relates to Miles parents. The music which was such a integral part of the first movie is nothing but background elevator music in this movie. What happened? The graphics were good at least.
Ending was terrible. You shouldn't do that to kids or adults after a build up of 5 years. Our movie theatre literally had kids booing at the end, and my own son who watched the first movie 5 times in 1 week in the lead up to watching the 2nd movie was crying because the ending disappointed him so much. It was awful and all of these critics don't know what they're talking about.
