Monsters: Household Gods (1990)

not a bad idea, horrible execution
23 April 2024
This could have been a decent episode given the concept. What's more horrifying than being betrayed by the ones you love so they can put you in a position of servitude? What's scarier than having your autonomy as a woman stripped away? As a person?

But instead of showing how terrifying it can be to find yourself trapped with a baby and a partner who won't hold up their end of the domestic work and parenting, the overall feel of the episode was cheesy and camp. I didn't feel like they captured how monstrous it would be to find the person you married conspiring with some awful bigoted creature just to hold you down because of prejudice they didn't reveal to you until you were in too deep.

Because of the camp feel and displays of "domestic bliss" if the women just give in, you almost feel like sexism is the moral of the story...

Siegler on Siegler
18 January 2024
I mean, what you're really getting is Siegler on Siegler, and she does not carry a show the way someone like Kenda could. Most folks who vie for the spotlight like she has can be pretty narcissistic and listening to an hour of that gets old fast... Siegler comes off as painfully ignorant at times; she's incredibly conservative and kind of ridiculous, like how she ignores the science behind why adolescents should not be tried as adults.

As far a true crime is concerned, it's just not interesting in the way any way that makes it worth watching... these crimes have been covered on other shows before, with better production, and either more involvement in explaining the crime - opportunity and motive - or the legal side of things, which this show just lacks.

I guess this would be great viewing if you're a boomer that needs to be hit over the head with repetitive crap and have your confirmation bias reflected back at you.

American Monster: Day Three After Murder (2023)

only half the story
20 July 2023
Daniel Halseth is painted as a wonderful human being and innocent victim... what about the fact he beat and sexually assaulted his wife, which he later pled guilty to, after the counts were reduced? What about the felonies he committed and was convicted of while abusing women in his family? What about his daughter's assertation that she was also one of his victims? Children, especially daughters, rarely up and kill their parents for no reason. It would have made for a fuller and more interesting story if they told us who Daniel Halseth really was. But instead they lied about what kind of person he was because I guess he wasn't a sympathetic enough victim without them doing so.

Exactly what the title suggests
7 January 2023
It's going to be made up, exaggerated, and absolutely ridiculous. I just watched them perform an exorcism on a pet spider. It's hilarious. The narrators are people who call a psychic, but not a vet, you know?

Watch it purely for the snark.

The reenactments and dramatizations are akin to what you'd see in a run of the mill true crime series, there are no animal experts interviewed, and often only one perspective given (from "the victim"). Some scenes seem to exist purely to give it a horror movie feel, but then it switches to absolute reality-tv camp (in the worst, unintentional way) within the same episode.

Sad, but not that mysterious
26 January 2022
If you know anything about psychosis, then you know what happened to Erma Alvarado. All of her behaviors line up exactly with being in a psychotic break. Taking off her shoes is just the cherry on top. There are multiple cases of people disappearing into rural, desert/hiking areas during psychosis, who lose their lives to the elements or accidental injury, & the fact that they're literally having a *break from reality.*

It's sad, and the real mystery is where her body is today. There's very little mystery about why or how she got out there.

It's a unique case regardless, because so many women who disappear are victims of a larger pattern or.

Where's the humor in name-dropping Jeffery Dahmer, who was gay & targeted men, as someone who seduced and murdered women? Or how someone who is supposed to have spent the last decade living in NYC is too stupid to understand personal space/boundaries with strangers? Socially inept characters can be hilarious, but this guy just comes off as incredibly uninformed & unwilling to see the world from anyone else's view, much less adapt to accommodate them.

If it didn't carry the Poehler name & the promise Aubery Plaza, along with other big name celebs, I'd have no idea how it ever got renewed.

I love Plaza & to me, deadpan humor is the pinnacle of excellence. But it's not worth trudging through entire episodes just for the tiny morsels of either offering.

Missed Opportunities

AA as a court-ordered mandate is one of those topics that needs much, much more attention. It needs this discussion because while it is the norm, it's an extremely unhealthy, problematic norm. If they explored AA based on real-world facts, this could be an incredible show.

Instead, the show appears to promote this non-evidence-based treatment. Not sure that we need more medical misinformation being spread on public platforms rn.

No complaints about the acting or cinematography, but the lack of critical thinking in R&D / on behalf of the writers is just gross.

hokey & worse
19 January 2022
For real, it's incredibly contrived, corny, & annoying. I've seen actors like Lowell & Raisa in other productions where their acting wasn't nearly this awful. I guess this is an intentional decision to set the tone of the show, since every actor comes off as contrived. Or maybe no one is allowed to out-act Hillary Duff? It isn't funny, but don't worry - there's a laugh track, so you can tell that it was *meant* to be funny.

Episode 2 features some incel slang, so that happened.

Huge Error/Misconception
19 January 2022
Storyline from this episode: two people who experience an adverse event together are mislabeled as 'trauma bonded' .... This is never corrected, & the misinformation itself is repeated a lot. **Trauma bonding involves Abuse.** Don't take something victims of Domestic Violence regularly suffer, then minimize & misconstrue it.

'the best way to get information is through Pain'
15 December 2021
There is an entire sub-plot involving torture for information. It takes them FOREVER to finally have someone explain that it's been statistically proven that torture doesn't work, and yet these science & security minded folks continue to ignore this fact. The writers could have come up with a much cooler plot device for obtaining info. Especially in sci-fi.

Disappointing
13 December 2021
Feels like this episode was written by a 12yo boy from an older generation. The plot sounds promising but instead it's full of sexist tropes & excuses to objectify women.

This also felt a lot like an episode of Bones if you took out the death and science. Yeah.

i like the show overall, BUT UGH
13 December 2021
Why introduce the deactivator gel, give it a set of rules, and then abandon them? It's a sign of lazy writing and poorly constructed sci-fi. If you're going to write in a cooler gadget that stops the artifact, at least bring some backup gel or some kind of quick explanation for why the agents didn't. It's like Buffy showing up for a fight without Mr. Pointy.

The Twilight Zone: The Pharaoh's Curse (2003)

It's SO OBVIOUS.
11 December 2021
I'm not sure how you can see the pharaoh's curse, as its shown to the audience near the beginning of this ep, and not know how the 'trick' is performed. Maybe if you have no real background knowledge of the sci-fi/horror/supernatural genre. Even if you are a child, the episode continues to hit you on the head with blatant clues. & the trope of 'take his word literally!' where a 'mysterious' character tells the protagonist the truth, even if he's short on details.

This is a reoccurring problem re: most episodes in this reboot. :/

Took a heavy subject, wrapped it in millennium-era parody & baroque comedy, made salient points about objectification, harassment, and the myth that abuse is only 'abuse' if it involves physical aggression. Characters come to their own Aha! Moments, avoiding preachiness.

"The way you treat girls today wholly determines how you treat women tomorrow." If they don't learn how to respect bodily autonomy and boundaries while their sexuality is still developing, we c.
