Killing Eve: Hello, Losers (2022)
Didn't even realize it had ended...
They had both almost died so many times-Villanelle merely moments before. I actually watched this a year late bc the rumors online made me avoid it. Finally did (and regretted it). But that also meant losing track of what episode I was on...during a nonsensical binge-watch. I didn't realize when I was at the end. Just saw another near death moment...and then it just... ended. Against everything it had said or claimed or had been building to. Like what?
You can call something terrible writing bc it didn't end up the way you wanted. Or thought it should. Fine. But then there is the wholly legitimate other side. Which is just terrible writing because it didn't seem to understand or reflect the material at all. Combined with the absolute bafflement as to whether the writers were even watching the same show you've been watching.
Clearly not.
Btw: the ill-timed croissant was on a Saturday. Not a Sunday. This moronic miss immediately undercut Carolyn's savviness in the moment, and ruined her dashing dialogue at every level. It was such an obvious mistaken recall from the very first scene of the series (cutting into the second) about it being Saturday and having the whole weekend fr(cutaway)... And they didn't even get that right. Sums it all up completely.
Idiots.
Baking It (2021)
More fun than expected
Not sure what folks were expecting, but this serves up Maya and Andy (in a Poehler production, no less) in all their awkward goofiness, ready to embrace their role. If you're not fans, maybe move along lol, but this is right on brand with their humor and style. Other reviewers might be missing the intentionality of such. Also the Grannies are fab: leaning into their legit grandma roles of blankets on rockers, and rummaging through purses (and the brooches!), but with no doubt they are actually accomplished and fully qualified in their fields to judge.
But after the first few episodes when the theme could've run thin, I think what actually kept me watching was the camaraderie between the contestants. Love to see it set up this way! The show might feel just a little bit cheesy until it gets its footing (the extra songs are abandoned), but when you see the participants actually supporting each other, baking for each other, with no drama or attempt to eliminate, I think it made a place for itself. It's actually quite unique and cool to watch. I was a little on the fence but I kept it playing and now I'm invested in the group of friends. Lol. Perfect holiday vibe when it's December, but too early to put Christmas movies on repeat yet. Fun!
The Intervention (2016)
Hilarious and Real
I can't believe all the weird confused young people giving this movie a bad rating. The casting is perfect. The variation of actual adult issues with actual adult self-awareness and vacillating moments of humor is also perfect. The reuniting of besties Msss. Lyonne and DuVall is funny, realistic, (hot), and sweet. And what can I say about Melanie Lynskey! Hilarious and sublimated as always, the master of intensely containing what is barely controlled rage-the perfect archetype of the woman who exudes controls in all of the areas she is really out of control. And she's just hilarious! ("I think we should do something" "Like what, kiss?") As the clear suppose main character, she just exudes the need for compassion and laughs as she struggles to confront so many things within herself. And when the slow buildup of everything finally hits the fan, it was ridiculous and hilarious and yet somehow still real ("Nobody likes a Jolene."). (PS Alia Shawkat is just great in her seemingly-limited character role, and big shout to Ben Schwartz for a layer we're not used today seeing). Enjoyed it all! Weird to read the user reviews not honestly recognizing themselves in the imperfect people we all are. Welcome to the stupid complexities and simplicities of adulthood. A win!
The Golden Girls: Mother's Day (1988)
Another Young Dorothy!
I just ADORE Lynnie Green as young Dorothy. She nails the part every time. Perfect casting.
I watched this show with my aunt and grandma growing up, and then as an older-teen after Will & Grace night, but rewatching it as a bit older adult has added her to the list of new gems I've discovered.
30 Rock: Live Show (2010)
Beyond Funny
I had only seen this ep once and couldn't even remember it. Luckily Netflix treats NBC shows better than NBC's actual streaming service. And while this ep was removed completely from Peacock, Netflix has included it with the controversial scene removed. Even still, this is one of the funniest things I've seen, with a grear blend of the bizarre 30Rock and the best of SNL style, and makes for a super fun night. Weirdos whining about plot development don't get it at all: this show is an event, and totally worth every little trick and surprise, and even purposefully flat jokes and minor botched lines. Clever and hilarious.
