Euphoria: All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name (2022)
I don't know about this one...
I don't write a lot of reviews but I had tons of thoughts on this episode so I felt like I had to spill them out somewhere. Through watching this season I always enjoyed it more than the first. I don't know if it was just the traditional feeling of tuning in every week or what it was but I enjoyed this season much more than season 1. In part, I think this is due to Ash and Fez getting more screen time. As a big fan of multiple crime TV shows I always found these 2 more interesting than the high school drama stuff and was very happy when the season opened up with an episode filled with Fez and Ash. This really led me to believe that Ash was going to become less of a minor character and have a crazy arc throughout the series. I always found the idea of a child growing up surrounded by crime super interesting and Ashes story could've been incredible and even worthy of a spin off in my opinion. I really did believe they were starting to focus on him/Fez to give more depth to the characters... but now it's kinda clear their plan was to get us more attached to him so the emotion/shock value hits viewers harder when they kill him off. I don't know if they did this purely for shock, or if they're using it as some plot device to grow Fez's character further but either way it feels so cheap to me. This is something I really hate that a lot of shows do. This episode wasn't horrible but it definitely wasn't great either. I felt like we got little to no closure and I'm unsure if I'm even interested in the next season. I will say, throughout the series the cinematography still stayed incredible which is what drew me towards it in the first place but now I feel like that's literally all it's got going for it. I'm too mature for the high school drama stuff now.
The Lighthouse (2019)
What did I just watch
I can't necessarily say this was a bad movie but I can say I have no idea what I just watched. The movie was shot beautifully and visually appealing in most scenes. The acting was a 10/10 for both Defoe and Patterson as they both had outstanding performances. This was a very strange film. A lot of random stuff goes on at that light house that makes you wonder if it's happening or if it's one of Patterson's delusions. This was a very different movie considering the strange aspect ratio and the old school black and white look coming back. I enjoyed The Witch which is what lead me to see this film and they were two very different movies. This was a very strange film.
Joker (2019)
Bone chilling performance
Luckily, I work at a theater where I was able to view this film early. Joker was a very different film especially inside the comic book genre. With the R rating and extremely dark story it puts it in its own category. Joaquin Phoenix had an amazing performance and is one of the most terrifying characters I've ever seen on the big screen. As always, De Niro delivered on his part as well. Overall great movie and I think needs a second watch to fully enjoy it.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Didn't want it to be this way.
Like most people I went into this movie with extremely high expectations. Me being a fan of all of Tarantino's movies + the amazing cast this movie had sold it for me instantly. All the set and costume designs were amazing, but they don't really mean much without plot. This movie was just a compilation of boring scenes about an actors every day life. None of these scenes really drove the story anywhere and felt overall dry without any main conflict. Leo's character wasn't really likeable and everyone else besides Brad Pitt felt flat. The Mansons were extremely underused because all of their scenes were the only ones I enjoyed watching. I really tried to like this movie but there wasn't much to take from it. Also, what's up with all those shots of feet my man Tarantino freaky.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
I'm ok with it
By no means was Toy Story 4 a bad movie, I just don't feel it was needed. Toy story 3 gave us a satisfying ending to the series with Andy becoming older and giving all his toys away to Bonnie. The story could've ended there, but they made a 4th. Toy story 4 was enjoyable and gave me some laughs even as a teenager now, and even seeing the characters again gave me nostalgia and memories from my childhood. This movie actually gets a little deep when they get into lost toys and being outdated. The way the 3rd movie closed off would have been a more satisfying for the series than what we got in toy story 4, but I'm definitely ok with the 4ths closure. Overall a pretty good movie that was just unneeded.
Barry: berkman > block (2019)
Saved my night
I got into Barry after seeing it come on after every thrones episode. I finally caught up and watched it live every week after this sad season of thrones to lighten the mood. After being disappointed with the game of thrones finale like everyone else in the world it left me in a terrible mood to see them destroy so many character arcs. Then Barry came on. It picked up right where we left off in the woods and the episode was amazing throughout. Hank and Cristobal had their hilarious scenes as always and still balanced it out with some darker parts of the episode. Then we got that gun scene at the end. This had to be one of my favorite scenes in the series as we get to see how skilled Barry really is. Not gonna spoil how but they perfectly teased us for the next season and I can't wait for it to start.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Best of the trilogy
John Wick Chapter 3 was everything I pictured it to be. The opening 30 minutes of the movie had some of the best action I've seen, not only in this franchise, but in any action film I've ever seen. On top of that the rest of the movie was non stop as well. Halle Berry had an amazing performance in this movie and the long action sequence with her and her dogs was phenomenal. This was an outstanding follow up to chapter 2 and I'm extremely grateful they teased us for a 4th film.
