A great fantasy filled with enchanting music and beautiful artwork
14 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
*Summary is at the top, Review is at bottom*

Goshu the Cellist is a great fantasy that tells the story of Goshu, a cellist, and how he improves his cello playing by learning from four different animals, or spirits. Accompanying the story is an amazing score and beautiful, detailed artwork.

The story begins with Goshu and the orchestra he is playing in practicing for a recital. His maestro begins to get frustrated with his lack of emotion and out of rhythm playing.

Goshu later goes home and begins to practice and hears a knock at his door and opens it to find a Cat, probably prototype artwork for The Cat Returns and Whisper of the Heart. This Cat requests that he play a piece, but Goshu refuses and plays "The Indian Tiger Hunt". This makes the Cat fly around the room and hit his head, among other things.

The next night he is visited by a Cuckoo, who asks him to play the scale so he can practice. Goshu does this, reluctantly, and goes into a dreamlike state where he is in a clearing in the forest and the Cuckoo is flying into the sky, which is later broken when he thinks of Beethoven as a bird. He begins to yell at the Cuckoo and makes the him leave.

A young Raccoon (possibly another prototype for Pom Poko) is the next animal, or spirit, to visit Goshu. The Raccoon asks Goshu to play a song so he can play the drums on Goshu's cello. The first time Goshu plays it, the Raccoon tells Goshu that whenever he plays the second string, he feels like he is stumbling. Goshu then plays the song again and goes into another dream, where he and the Raccoon are playing on a moonlit field. It soon becomes morning and the Raccoon leaves.

Goshu's last visit comes from a Mouse and her child. She tells him that her child is dying and Goshu is the only one who can cure him. Goshu proclaims that he is not a doctor, therefore can not help. He soon finds from the Mouse that his music cures the animals, and that whenever an animal gets sick, they go under his floorboards and are cured almost instantly. Goshu agrees to play, and the child mouse is cured.

You then see Goshu performing with his orchestra. When they are finished, the maestro begins to cry. They are asked for an encore, so the maestro sends Goshu to play. Goshu thinks that this is to make fun of him, so he plays "The Indian Tiger Hunt" again. Even though he played this piece of music, everyone gave him a standing ovation. The maestro then comments on how he improved so much in just 10 days. The whole orchestra then goes to celebrate.

*Review* Goshu the Cellist is a wonderful piece of art. You could expect something this great from Takahata, and it also shows prototypes for the art in Pom Poko and The Cat Returns. The movie is filled with great artwork and music, and is very relaxing and gently paced. Although short, it will stick with you for a long time. This movie is hard to come across, so don't pass up the opportunity. You will not regret it.

Miyazaki + Takahata = What do you expect?
13 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
After hours of trying to figure out how to download a torrent and how to show the torrent with subtitles, I finally got to see this movie. I turned off the television, turned off the lights, and lied on my bed as the opening of the movie began to run. As I finally got comfortable, the great storyline, wonderful art, and awesome music began to take its toll. I, of course, had high expectations for this movie, the big Ghibli freak I am. Was this movie worth 5 hours of work? Of course.

The story begins with Horus fighting a pack of wolves, where he looses his ax and is taken up by Maug, a rock giant. On Maug's shoulder is the Sword of the Sun, which, surpassing Maug's expectations, Horus pulls out. Maug tells him he must restore the sword and master it, and he will become the Prince of the Sun.

Horus later finds from Koro, a bear whom Horus has befriended, that his father is dying. He reaches his father in time for him to tell Horus about where he came from. He also tells him to go and find his people.

Horus and Koro set out to find his people, and he comes across Grunwald, who gives Horus the opportunity to become his brother. Horus refuses, as he knows Grunwald is the demon that destroyed his village. Grunwald then makes him fall off a cliff, thinking Horus is dead.

Horus is later found by a child from a village nearby and wakes at the boys home, to find that his father was just killed by a giant fish. Horus later kills the fish, allowing fish to come upstream and feed the villagers.

He soon meets Hilda in an abandoned village, who tells him that her village was destroyed and was the only survivor, and that no village will accept her. He then takes her to his village, where she is accepted by all because of her beautiful singing.

From there you will find action, adventure, betrayal, loss, friendship, and redemption.

I won't tell you any more than this, but just know that this movie is filled with great characters with real personalities, a wonderful score, and an awesome storyline. Everyone can identify with at least one of the complex characters. A must see for any Miyazaki, Takahata, Ghibli, or Anime fans.

Rated G: No one over the age of 2 allowed
25 February 2006
If you are over the age of 2, I do not suggest going to this movie, unless your kids force you under knife and gun. After many successful animated movies for the ENTIRE family, which include Hoodwinked, Shrek, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, Shark Tale, and even Monsters INC., this falls short of "Family Friendly". This is the type of movie that should go straight to DVD and be bought by families with 2 and 3 year olds to watch when they have a baby sitter. It clearly falls under the same league as Sesame Street and *gasp* Barney.

I went with my family, and we only watched 15 minutes of it before changing our plans and seeing Firewall. Luckily, the manager had no problem if we had watched under 30 minutes of the movie. Within the 15 minutes I saw, there was bad animation (comparable to Casper's Haunted Christmas and other straight to DVD movies) and horrible jokes. It is the kind of movie where there is laughter from 2 year olds because the cow was singing opera (which hurt my eardrums) and a wagon flying around.

If you plan on seeing this movie, be sure to bring some earplugs and a sleeping pill to take a nice 1 and a half hour nap, if you can sleep through the laughter of the 2 year olds. Do something for yourself and hire a babysitter to take your children, but be sure to pay them extra.

This movie will make you feel good.
14 January 2006
I saw this film with my mom, and we both loved every minute of it. In fact, I'm pretty sure everyone loved it, because it was one of the only movies that everyone clapped at the end. Although it was often silly and predictable, it was absolutely hysterical and had a lot of heart.

Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah), a worker at a supermarket, is a normal, shy and reserved person. She's afraid to talk to the guy she loves (Sean, played by LL Cool J), and she never does anything exciting. Within the first 15 minutes, you see her cook a wonderful looking meal which she cooked along with the show "Emeril", in which she takes a picture of and gives to her neighbor. She in turn eats a Lean Cuisine. These greatly affect the establishment of her character, so I give props to the writers.

She later hits her head and learns that she has a terminal disease and is going to die in 3 weeks. She is very sad at first, and goes back to her normal life for a day or two, when she finally looks at her possibilities book (a book with all the things she wish she would have eaten, vacations she wanted to go on, and fake pictures of her marrying Sean), and decides to go to the "Grandhotel Pupp" and live up her last three weeks.

Once at the hotel, she sees the senator of Louisianna (who was supposed to attend her church service) and Congressman Kragen, the owner of the chain of shops that she works at. She also meets the hotel staff, ranging from a mean housekeeper to a kind chef she had wanted to meet. That is where the humor really starts.

She completely splurges, getting the nicest room in the hotel and getting orders of everything in the restaurant, making everyone think she is a very important person. She also manages to get many different spa treatments and do many exciting things including snowboarding and base jumping.

You get all the humor of a typical Queen Latifah movie, with a lot of heart that will make you love the movie even more. The drama isn't really extremely big, but it really makes you enjoy the movie more. The best part of the movie, in my opinion, is when Georgia says "Next time... we will laugh more, we'll love more; we just won't be so afraid.". It makes you appreciate life and enjoy the movie. You will laugh, you may even cry, but you will leave the theater with a smile on your face.

Great movie with lots of good action and humor.
16 October 2005
This movie is one of my all time favorite Studio Ghibli movies (although I loved every single one I've seen). The way that Takahata portrayed the raccoons as how they acted when humans weren't around was great. It completely changed my view of raccoons.

The plot was very strong and also made you aware of modern day construction and how our forests are being destroyed. It also had great characters with many differences. There were smart ones, rough ones, calm ones, and ones that could pull through in times of hardship. Many showed compassion, and many didn't think anything through.

I also loved the human reactions to the raccoons. The raccoons made many very funny attempts to scare the humans and.. well I'll just leave it at VERY funny.

If you didn't like this movie, it may have been from the lack of understanding the portrayal of the raccoons, or because the humor isn't just your type of humor. I do believe that anyone, especially a Studio Ghibli fan (like me) would love this movie. It is great for the family, kids, or just adults.. There is definitely humor for all of them.
