Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Mythical
"Pirates of the Caribbean", first of the name is an excellent film, it is undeniable. The actors are all very good, although Johnny Deep surpasses everyone from the beginning, the moment when he arrives on the mast of his ship which is mythical and which allows to make of Jack Sparrow the image of the film (then of the saga) and tying it to Johnny Deep who made him "his" character. Definitely one or THE best film about piracy on the part of a very good realization, excellent sets, special effects that have not aged and an Original Sound Track that remains and will remain in the annals of cinema, an excellent film that justifies largely a 9/10! Mythical.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Not a good sequel
The sequel of the excellent "Pirates of the Caribbean" is for me missed. So yes, Johnny Deep is still very good, yes, the special effects are very good but that is not enough. Already, I must say, I don't like the fantastic. In the first opus, it didn't bother me but in this one I really didn't like and so Davy Jones is certainly very charismatic but I really didn't hang. Otherwise, it remains a sequel and I find that, even if one remains in the atmosphere of the first, there is disappointment. And if not, concern the end (which I would not spoil), personally, I'm not really hyped, even a little dubious. Well, it's not a bad movie but for me, it's not a good sequel. I hesitated between putting 7/10 or 6/10 but after seeing the third film of the saga, which I preferred but which is not worth more than 7 for me, I opted for a 6/10. Not a good sequel.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Better than the second opus
The third episode of the saga "Pirates of the Caribbean" is rather successful. For me, it surpasses the second without however reaching the summits of the first. There is obviously good and less good, let's start with the least good: it must be said, the couple Elizabeth- Will is not very interesting and becomes heavy in the scenario, going so far as to explain in fight, slowing down the pace or getting married in a completely failed scene in my opinion. We also have the advice of the lords who is cool but who comes out of nowhere, in mode "It is necessary to resurrect Jack to go to this board", the scenario is weak and it makes a first part of the film heavy, especially with the moments when Jack is in his head particularly bitchy. The last big fault of this film is its length, 2:40 is too long, really. Let's move on to the positive side, obviously, as in all the Pirates of the Caribbean, a very beautiful film with special effects always magnificent. The big point of this film is especially the final battle which is very successful and that makes this film deserves a 7/10. Better than the second opus.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
Définitly the movie too
The fourth episode of the saga "Pirates of the Caribbean" is disappointing. There is a less impressive Jack Sparrow (I said Jack Sparrow not Johnny Deep), a film with a scenario too simple that doesn't put anything and nobody in value, or even Black Beard that arrives like a hair on the soup, we had never heard of it, and there is also emblematic characters missing, like Will and Elizabeth but also the two pirates of the Black Pearl who were recurrent since the first opus. Finally, the biggest flaw, in my opinion, of this film is that in the title "Pirates of the Caribbean" there is the word "Pirate", so it should happen at sea but however, 70 percent of the film happens on the ground and without the Black Pearl. All this makes this movie an average movie not worth more than 5/10. Définitly the movie too.
Hidden Figures (2016)
A very good movie
A movie that speaks both sexism and segregation in the 60's could only be good. The film deals with a little-known story that tells the undertones of the space conquest, which would not have been the same without these three women. The film is without suspense but remains interesting especially thanks to the actresses (and actors). It happens to show us three different women physically and psychologically but united and welded by the friendship but also by their colors of skin through a classic realization, simple but effective. A very good movie, 8/10.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
The Redux is perhaps the worst mistake of Mr. Coppola's career
Apocalypse Now, a cult movie, or rather, two cult movies. There are two versions of this film, a release in 1979 that lasts (already) 2:20 and a release in 2001 called "Apocalypse Now Redux" that lasts 3:15. I made a mistake, I looked the version "Redux". Why is this version available? 45 more minutes that do not serve anything, it's really stupid. Let us now turn to the film itself. The film is intriguing, we get into it, through a captain Willard played by Martin Sheen who is very good and endearing, furthermore it must be said, it's true that the attack scene with helicopters is mythical. The basic scenario of this film is good and it shows well the absurdity of the Vietnam's war and had better still show it in 1979 at the release of the film. However one begins to feel a film more boring and annoying a little after spending the two hours, the film becomes worse. And what about the appearance of Colonel Kurtz played by Brando who, when looking at the Director's Cut version, is expected for almost three hours? Disappointing, that's what it is, I was expecting something epic but no, it's just naught. Finally, after seeing the scenes that were added in the long version, I told myself that I would have appreciated much more this film in "normal" version, so I decided to note somewhat the two versions, the 2:20' version will deserve for me 8/10 when in the Redux' version, it does not deserve more than 6/10 for me, so, (8 + 6) ÷ 2 = 7/10, which makes Apocalypse Now a "well movie" whereas it could have been an excellent film without this Redux. The Redux is perhaps the worst mistake of Mr. Coppola's career.
127 Hours (2010)
Just "not bad"
This movie is rather successful, at least when you see the basic scenario, making a whole movie about a guy stuck for 127 hours is not easy. But this one is a good movie, we are bored at times but nothing serious. However this film remains a film without a goal and to make a film of an hour and a half on a true story which can be summarized in a few lines is very delicate, too much delicate and it's why it's difficult for this movie to have more than 6/10, it just remains "not bad".
Midnight Special (2016)
"Midnight Special" or how to fall asleep at night, by Jeff Nichols !
I had read good of this movie but nevertheless ... what a sh*t! This movie is ten times too long, a deep boredom, 1:50 while half would be enough! The end saves the bet but yet ... 4/10, I don't even know how I can put so much! "Midnight Special" or how to fall asleep at night, by Jeff Nichols!
Hannibal Rising (2007)
Why a fuc*ing prequel ??
Why did they make a prequel? I mean expect for the money? Five years after the last film about Hannibal, why try to explain? We find ourselves with a film that makes us have pity for Lecter at first, we even have a rather shady moment when we understand by their looks that they will eat his sister but was it we wanted? Get the explanation of the cruelty of Lecter? Personally I would have liked to have the memory of "Hannibal the Cannibal" inhabited by an unexplained and inexplicable cruelty, not an Hannibal of which one has pity! This film is really not terrible and 4/10 is still well paid, it is not by showing cannibalism that we make a good film about Dr. Hannibal Lecter! Why a fuc*ing prequel??
Red Dragon (2002)
A convincing remake !
The remake of "Manhunter" by Michael Mann of 1986 is successful, it's the same story but just for the intro, which shows the circumstances of the arrest of Lecter, it deserves to be seen. The film remains relatively the same, with a few sentences that are exactly the same but also some novelties. This film is a success, it is more poignant and made much less old than the first, it deserves a 7, just for the intro and the last scene, I think I did not appreciate the movie so much because I saw Manhunter the day before I saw Red Dragon, so I knew the script perfectly and I was not surprised. But it's still a convincing remake!
Minority Report (2002)
Spielberg ruined this script ...
A masterpiece ? No. I'm sorry but we can't qualify this film as a "masterpiece" even though I respect everyone's opinion. I don't question the career of Spielberg but there! He made of a movie who got an interesting script a movie not attractive with scenes of action that I find average for a director like him, a film too long and too slow, cold, without rhythm, predictable and especially boring. It's harm because the special effects are very good and the fundamental issue of knowing if a criminal can be stopped before he committed his crime was interesting. Definitely, it deserves no more than 5. Spielberg ruined this script ...
Watchmen (2009)
An unconventional superhero movie
Watchmen is a superhero film different from the others, it stands out from Marvels movies but its dark side shows that it is a DC. We are in a period of Cold War and heroes must save the world from a nuclear threat. The script is good, plans are very detailed and meticulous and special effects, especially those of Dr. Manhattan are successful. Here we see unconventional heroes, with no powers, except for Dr. Manhattan, they are only men, they are not invincible and certainly are not angels, the Comedian is the perfect example. However, the film is too long, 2H45 is too much! The character of Rorschach is very interesting, however, I am very disappointed to have seen his face, is what tipped me more for the 7 than for the 8. Note Also that the film has a good Original Sound Track. An unconventional superhero movie.
Hannibal (2001)
Hannibal the Cannibal
This sequel of "The Silence of the Lambs" is well done, with this time an Hannibal Lecter always played by Hopkins, who is at the center of the film. He's in Florence and lives a "normal" life, if I can say this, while Agent Starling tracks him. With an involved atmosphere, Ridley Scott shows us a monstrous Hannibal but this time, more physically whereas in the first opus, it was the psychological that was put forward. This is good sequel to Silence of the Lambs which deserves a good 7/10. Hannibal the Cannibal.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Maybe I'll love it in few years
"The Silence of the Lambs" is a thriller and I am not a big thriller's fan, I like, but no more and this movie does not unfortunately derogate from the rule. Despite a very convincing and masterful Anthony Hopkins in the role of a Hannibal Lecter that we only see twenty minutes but which marks us, being fascinating while keeping a very disturbing side that defines well Hannibal Lecter but it must be said, Jody Foster in the role of Clarice Starling is also very good. Unfortunately I did not really get into the film, a shady atmosphere but that did not affect me more than that and scenes of Lecter can be too made to be "shock" and not psychological enough for my taste. However it remains for me a good movie and a cult movie that I will see again in a few years, with the hope of succeeding in entering this film which is worth only a 7/10 for me today. Maybe I'll love it in few years!
Manhunter (1986)
The first Hannibal Lecter's movie
The first film about the famous Hannibal Lecter dates from 1986 and this is the problem of this movie I think, it has aged badly. Besides this problem, it is still a Hannibal Lecter that is not played by Anthony Hopkins, certainly, but Brian Cox is not bad, as is William Peterson who is well present in his role as main actor. One complaint I could make at this movie is also that it is a bit too long. Otherwise, it is not bad and a 3/5 is therefore logical for the first Hannibal Lecter's movie.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
The great art !
Wow. This movie is fantastic. Stanley Kubrick decided to separate his film in two parts, one part where we see the training of the soldiers and another where these same soldiers are in Vietnam for the war. From the beginning, the Sergeant Hartman announced the color, he managed to make laughter by humiliating and insulting his soldiers, he comes out incredible catchwords and remains funny, even at his death. However, he embodies the harshness of American training, not hesitating to punish all his men for the error of only one of them, but he don't forget to spare the one who had made the mistake, In order to this guy be hate by his mates. The second part of the film shows the horror of the Vietnam war through Joker, a war reporter whose job it is to hide the truth about the war from the Americans The same paradoxical man with a "Born to Kill" helmet but also a "Peace and Love" pine, showing the absurdity of this war. In the end, at the end of each of the two parts, goes wrong, showing the failure of the US Army. With this film, Stanley Kubrick demonstrates the absurdity of this Vietnam War where the United States destroyed men in a war lost on all fronts. For me, this movie is really not far to get a 10. The great art!
Taken 2 (2012)
I wasn't too taken by the action as in "Taken"
The sequel to the very good "Taken" is good, less than the first, this is usually the case, but good. On the whole, everything is a little worse, the basic idea of the scenario is good, it is a good sequel but the rest of the scenario a little less good, too simple. The scenes of actions are also a little less good, may be because of the change of director but it remains plausible. Here, Bryan's daughter, Kim is no longer the person saved but she's sort of the savior, that's pretty interesting. Nevertheless, there are still some surrealistic aspects of Bryan's reflection, which have been overemphasized at times by the situation in which he is. I find it a shame not to have given any news about Kim's singing career when, as I recall, it was the final scene of the first opus. It's still a good movie and 7/10 is pretty logical. I wasn't too taken by the action as in "Taken".
Taken 3 (2014)
Taken, the end ?
The last episode of the saga "Taken" directed by Olivier Megaton who also realized the second film. I liked the early pursuit race, even if it was rather simple, it made the movie cool from the start. I've been waiting since the beginning of the saga for an adventure with Bryan's mates, unfortunately, it is only 30 minutes from the end and it takes too much direction of an Impossible Mission Force ... One of my regrets is that at times it's not credible, either for the car scene, even if we have an explanation or even the plane at the end, It's too much. Not bad to conclude (I hope) the saga, a 6/10. Taken, the end ?
Taken (2008)
I was taken by the action
A father who is on the phone with his daughter when she gets kidnapped? Why not ? But when the father is a former agent of the American secret services played by a Liam Neeson without pity, close to everything to find his daughter, it becomes interesting! Throughout the film, we focus on Bryan during his fight against Albanian pimps, adhere to his fight, his unorthodox methods, even if he puts all Paris to sack. We are with him in his fight and we follow him in scenes of actions well done, not too disproportionate, just what it takes. One of the reproaches I would make to this film is that it is a little too short for my taste, I would probably have liked a few tens of minutes more. This film deserves a 8/10! I was taken by the action!
Blade Runner (1982)
Unfortunately not for me
Ouch ... a cult film by Ridley Scott! And though ... Well already I am not a fan of science fiction movies and even less of cyberpunk but I had told myself "Why not, it can surprise me!" But no, I didn't get into the film at all and I was bored during all the movie, even the action scenes were annoying ... I think this movie can please someone who likes science-fiction and who is interested in the film a little closer? Maybe. I do not know. In any way my 5 does not mean that the movie is just average no, rather it is not made for me (or that I'm not made for him who knows?). Unfortunately not for me!
The Equalizer (2014)
Very good action movie, bad thriller
In this film, Antoine Fuqua presents us a former CIA agent who embarks in a fight against Russian pimps. Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington is an awesome man, arriving has killed 5 men with their own weapons and a corkscrew. He is impressed by his mastery of the fight but also and above all by his inhuman cold blood, he manages to pierce the skull of a man without flinching. The character is very imposing and we attach to it but what caused me problem in this film is: Why? Why embark on it? Just because he's attached to a young prostitute? I find it difficult to get there unfortunately. This film is still a good action movie but as far as the plot is concerned, we will go back, it still deserves 7/8 because the action is very successful. Very good action movie, bad thriller.
La rafle (2010)
A French film about a French shame
Movies about the Second World War are some of the favorite subjects of writers and directors, movies about the Holocaust, some very beautiful, such as "The Pianist" or "Schindler's List" which are two monuments of cinema, but these films deal with the Holocaust in Poland or in the German camps but movies on the politics of the government of Petain and the Holocaust in France, and thus represented by the Vel d'Hiv, there are very few of them and it can be said that this one is successful, denouncing a face very often hidden but especially very black History (with a large H) of France, showing Jews living on French territory expelled and deported, believing they are directed to a Jewish territory while they are directed only to extermination camps. The film is historically interesting and poignant, a success that deserves 7/10. A French film about a French shame.
The Judge (2014)
I judge this movie excellent
Excellent. This is what the movie "The Judge" is. But especially what is the performance of Robert Downey Jr., he is masterly in this film, mixing humor and sad reality of a life devoted to his (great) career as a lawyer, having left behind family and friends. We see in this film a very interesting father-son relationship but it is not only that, Hank's career is often questioned, as he has only clients guilty, privileging money and glory to his family life, whether his wife and daughter or his brothers and parents. After having had to return to the sources because of the death of his mother, he finds himself confronted with his past. But he must also, as a lawyer, represent his father, judge, suspected of murder and who prefers his honor and his integrity to freedom. A poignant film even more highlighted by the exceptional performance of RDJ and which deserves well a 9/10! I judge this movie excellent !
Apollo 13 (1995)
"Houston, we've had a problem" was essential
A good historical film that traces the Apollo 13 mission, we have three visions of action, the rocket where are the three astronauts, the NASA command post where the best scientists of the world try to help these three men stuck in the space and the families, mostly Jim Lovell's, played by Tom Hanks, these three points of view are quite interesting. I think that the fact that I already know the story, and therefore the end, disturbed me a bit, at no time did I think "they may not be able to survive", it's a disadvantage, we do with. All in all the movie is good or very good but I think, even if it seems harmless, I would have liked that the sentence "Houston, we've had a problem" has more importance and is said in a tone perhaps more solemn than just said like that, it is certainly why I rate 7 and not 8. "Houston, we've had a problem" was essential.
Paths of Glory (1957)
Glory to M. Kubrick for this masterpiece
Stanley Kubrick is releasing a film denouncing an injustice during the First World War, two French generals send their troops in a suicide mission to take a point to the Germans, faced with the impossibility of advancing before the enemy bullets, French soldiers don't advance. This film shows the devotion of a simple colonel, Colonel Dax interpreted by Mister Kirk Douglas himself, trying to defend French soldiers who listened to their instincts of survival against French seniors officers thinking only of their careers, Kubrick shows the human (and maybe the French, who knows?) stupidity to want to make examples where those who should be killed are those who send their troops to die without any mercy and not those who are sent as cows to the slaughterhouse. The film is animated by special effects of time, but neither the latter nor the black and white are disturbing, on the contrary, it brings authenticity to this masterpiece of Stanley Kubrick who deserves his 9/10, almost a 10 ! Glory to M. Kubrick for this masterpiece!
