Two good actors wasted on a nowhere plot
16 March 2007
This is without a doubt the worst, I say worst, movie I have ever seen. What a waste of talent, what a lack of plot. I cannot say enough bad about it. I invited gay friends to see it and two out of three had fallen asleep before it was into a half an hour. They left and I watched it in agony until the bitter end. I am sure Hayek does not want to be reminded of it. I am gay and wanted to see something gay and interesting. This does not even begin to fit that bill. Don't, I repeat, don't even think of watching it. The illness which Valentino has is never quite explained. One would think it was AIDS but it looked more like TB. The changing of scenes is terribly confusing. The main character is so out of his element with D'Onofrio and Hayek.

Lovely film
3 December 2006
I don't know whether anyone has raved about how beautiful Daniel Chilson is. I have tried to search the net for some more information on him. On the contrary, the only one who was not attractive was his lover, Pete. It is hard to me to believe that any one so gorgeous as "Griff" would fall in love with anyone so homely as "Pete". That, of course, is a subjective opinion. I would recommend this picture to all gays where the themes are still quite valid and the good old boy atmosphere of frats still remains supreme. Even today, after so much "Gay Liberation" talk, reality is such that our society is still mainly homophobic. Straights even avoid seeing programs in which gay characters are featured. Effeminacy still makes them wince. Even gays wince when they see someone who is flaming. This, of course, continues to be unfair. I am not sure how to change all that. It certainly is not through film if straights won't see them. I know that a great amount of effort is expended trying to have us accepted just as another human being with the same needs as straights but when we see the governor of the only State where gay-marriage is legal, running for President and completely in favor of amending the constitution so as to eliminate the gay-marriage in Massachussets, and our own President in favor of the same, in spite of how the straights have turned marriage into a farce by divorcing over and over again, we then see what we are up against. We are still low man on the totem pole and it is because of the rotten hypocrisy of the fundamentalists of organized religion. I still think Daniel Chilson is gorgeous.

Human Kindness at its best
23 August 2006
I saw this movie yesterday. I got it from Netflix. I knew nothing about it beforehand and was delightfully surprised by it. It is perfect acting and shows such acts of human kindness and tenderness that it should be seen by everyone. I don't know when I have seen such a completely satisfying movie. Don Justo is a dear old soul with the pride of generations long since disappearing. The scenes at the television station are high camp. And of course, one cannot find enough praise for the traveling salesman. All of this and the bleak countryside of Patagonia make this an incredible film. I wish I could see more films like this and in settings far from the madding crowd. One can feel the sympathy which the director feels for his characters.

True fatherly love
4 August 2006
I believe this movie to be outstanding from the point of view of cinematography and acting. The father is a wonderful character who quickly shows the boys how to behave. The younger of the two and the more rebellious one is annoying since his scowling never lets up. I believe he smiled once in the whole movie when they were crossing to the island in the boat. The surprise ending was all the more moving because we know the real motives for what happened. This movie truly deserves the Golden Lion that it won in Venice. I believe that some of the critics felt the need to pan the movie merely because that is what they like to do. Again, it is excellent and I recommend it most highly.
