After Life (2019–2022)
10/10
Multi-dimensional hard-hitting magic
18 August 2019
This has got to be one of the best, most affecting and relevant TV shows ever made! It'll have you laughing hysterically one minute and crying the next. It tackles some of life's big issues with a lot of heart and sincerity and a lot of deep dark humour. Ricky Gervais is a genius!

Not what I'd expected, nor what I'd hoped for.

This film feels kind of sloppily put together and not thoroughly explored in terms of characters, themes, cultures, etc. I found it difficult to follow, with characters flitting about, making odd decisions, and the repercussions being suggested rather than explored. I felt like the homosexual themes, and the cultural struggles weren't well explored, and therefore the movie ended up being rather meaningless.

Meh
11 November 2017
A really interesting concept, but not made exceptionally well. It seems a bit long, and doesn't really look at real case, affect and solution/outcome, so it all feels a bit pointless. Kind of funny in bits, but I wouldn't put comedy as its genre. The female lead acted really well, but other cast members were lacking a bit.

Bloody brilliant

Absolutely amazing. I was hooked from the first 5 minutes, and there wasn't a point throughout where I didn't feel like I was 100% engaged in the story and its characters.

This movie deals with some really big themes, issues and ideas, and it does so incredibly well, with a lot of heart, candour and humour. There wasn't one bit that didn't seem believable to me, and since seeing it I haven't stopped thinking about the characters, and hypothesising their pasts and future, surrounding the film.

I won't say anything about the film's content because I really think it's best to go in knowing as little as possible, but 10/10 would recommend.

Absolutely laughable

Warning: Spoilers
I went into this movie with pretty low expectations, but I said I'd watch it with my boyfriend. He's a far more lenient and understanding film critic than I am, and he actually apologised for asking me to watch it! I like the concept of the film - the storyline has real potential, but from the moment Vaughan's character starts getting himself into deep trouble, knowing that his beloved pregnant wife is at home, things get real silly. He seems to have decided at some point that his existence in their lives wasn't necessary, or that he wasn't necessary, and the rest of the movie basically plays out with reckless abandon.

The special effects are TERRIBLE - I'm pretty sure most of the fight scenes with brutal violence actually showed rubber masks. And I mean bad, obviously rubber mask rubber masks. I found myself laughing and shaking my head a lot.

The characters seem shallow and temporary to me. I couldn't really care about any of them, and even the relationship between Vaughan and Carpenter's character was either too volatile and cold or too clichéd and sappy for me to invest in.

I know that Zahler's first film "Bone Tomohawk" is known for showing some really strong violence and gore, but in this film it was just a poor attempt at B grade-esque visuals, so there was literally nothing there for me. It's one of those movies that I feel was actually a waste of time.

A Ghost Story (2017)

I hated it
13 August 2017
I expected this movie to be quirky, and charming, but it was just dull and I couldn't wait to leave the cinema. I really like to see the positive side of things, but I actually struggled to enjoy anything about it. I spent most of the movie just being agitated and really searching hard for something to like, but I would have to say this movie is a top contender for the worst movie I've ever seen. Nothing happened, I felt nothing and got nothing from it. 0/10 would recommend.

The Beguiled (2017)

Kind of disappointing
17 July 2017
After seeing the trailer for The Beguiled in cinemas so many times leading up to viewing it I was really excited to be engrossed in a really rich and twisted story. The story began well and really drew me in, but it certainly didn't get much better from there. The characters are well developed and well acted, but the story itself was a little weak.

The same old Pirates - just way older
23 June 2017
I went into this movie not expecting a whole lot. Since the original Pirates of the Caribbean- and even the second- I haven't felt that sense of wonder and adventure and intrigue that really brought me to enjoy and love the movies. In Dead Men Tell No Tales I felt there was no sense of mystery or intrigue. Right from the beginning you know Jack Sparrow will be drunk, the Pirates will want gold, and that there will be silly trials and tribulations along the way. I essentially knew what the ending would be half an hour in, so I was really just sitting in the cinema, bored, and waiting for the inevitable (clichéd and drawn-out) ending to happen. I really would like to add something positive, but I genuinely can't think of anything.
