The Menu (2022)
It's ok
Loads of greedy, entitled, arrogant people go to an exclusive venue hosted by a weird eccentric man with an ulterior motive. This man has a devout workforce of minions who all look, act and sound the same.
At the end of the day, the most honest, normal person comes out on top and everyone else suffers/loses/dies because they deserved it.
This film is just a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. To be honest though, it's not a terrible film. It has laughs and kept my attention for the full running time. The actors are great, Nicholas Hoult, Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes are all excellent.
Gerald's Game (2017)
I was with it until the last 10 minutes
I enjoy the work of Stephen King and Mike Flanagan, well most of it and I enjoyed most of this.
It's a well paced, tightly written horror/thriller with just enough creepiness and gore to satisfy everyone.
I have an issue with the last 10 minutes and the reveal that the moonlight man was real. It didn't ruin the film for me but I think the moonlight man would have better served as a metaphor/allegory for the abusive nature of Gerald and her dad and her coming to accept and rectify that. I know that's what the final scene tried to do but I think it may have been stronger if the existence of him was ambiguous and the message was stronger.
Red Eye (2005)
Nope
I wasn't expecting much with this and luckily I didn't get much.
It's got some well done, tense moments, particularly initially on the plane but just gets silly.
I'm sure there are many more efficient and sensible ways to assassinate a target than firing a rocket at a building from a boat. Why not poison him in the lobby?
Cillian Murphy's character starts all cool and collected but doesn't take long from him to start panicking and flapping about. I don't think the job is for him. You think his tendency to get stressed quickly would have been weeded out during the application process.
Anyway, it's a poor thriller.
Men (2022)
Lots of discussion long after it's finished.
This film sets out exactly what it's meant to do. Some will say it's trying to be too clever, some won't get it and some say it's too obvious.
I enjoyed this film but I particularly enjoyed (and still enjoy) the discussion with friends after viewing.
I would say go in with an open mind. Every set piece, dialogue, image etc, I think, is deliberate and has meaning. Although your perception may vary from mine but I think that's the beauty of it.
Not Garland's strongest but will be widely misunderstood and judged because of the ending and the choices he made. Personally I liked the ending, it generated a lot of interesting discussion regarding what it could have meant.
Keep an open mind and pay attention to everything!
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Could/should have been half as long
Interesting story. Some good bits but this could have been done in half the time.
Cut out all the "internet sleuth" stuff. It offers nothing other than giving these folk a vehicle to spout conspiracy theory nonsense.
Bird Box (2018)
Too Many Loose Ends
SPOILERS
What happened to the pair that stole the car?
What was the creatures/presence in the first place?
Why are blind people hidden away in the land before time? They can surely be anywhere??
And
How did Tom find a gym to keep in decent shape over 5 years blindfolded, hidden and surviving?
It's a silly film that never takes off or hits the promise of the trailer.
