Britannia: Pax Romana (2018)
Entertaining fiction based (loosley) on fact
I love all historical and non-historical dramas/documentaries, whatever the century or genre. I watch to be entertained not to nit-pick because the wrong torque was worn or something seen didn't actually appear in use for another couple of centuries. That is why I love Britannia, it's pure escapism, good storylines, if at times complicated - which is why I record the episodes and watch later - and the acting is good with a strong cast; an excellent series. I hope series two is shown soon.
Finally, while everyone is entitled to their opinion, the reviewer who said the opening and closing music was terrible is obviously quite young, else they would have known that Hurdy Gurdy man was written in 1968 and performed by Donovan, an innovative singer/songwriter at that time. My personal opinion is that it is a perfect piece of music to use for the opening/closing credits as its very atmospheric
The ABC Murders (2018)
Good actors wasted
Was looking forward to his programme but OMG! What a load of total nonsense this production is. I want to say written for an American audience but that would be insulting the millions of US citizens who love, and know of, Agatha Christie's work.
I thought Jack Lemon's portrayal of Poirot was bad but John Malkovic's is beyond belief, although in his favour, he had a horrendous script to work with, a Director who obviously needs to find alternative employment and script writers who should have read the book, or at least seen David Suchet's version.
A..B Cust is a travelling salesman, the clue is in the word 'travelling', therefore he would not be in residence in one town, travelling to various towns but instead, stay in digs in whichever town he travels to.
Miss Christie never wrote any of her characters living with a landlady who prostituted her daughter! Who decided that storyline would be a good idea?
A Poriot who cannot speak French properly? And what's with the mysterious insinuation that Hercule was not a policeman in Belgium prior to WWI? Not in the book.
Killing off Japp in the first few minutes? Not in the book.
No Hastings? Totally ridiculous.
And finally. As another reviewer commented, young, unmarried females would not have spoken the way they were directed to do in this version.
Overall, a total disaster of a priduction and an insult to the great Agatha Christie
