Bookie (2023)
The vanity card at the end of the episode is hilarious!
The rant in the vanity card is priceless. I guess it's written by Chuck Lorre, who knows, but it was funny.
I really like the chemistry between Danny and Ray, and Hector blends in nicely as they meander through the city. I like how they got themselves in and out of trouble, often just as the fates allowed. While it seems they are more pawns, with very little control of their futures, they are still working to keep the bit of the world and reality they know intact as possible. But it looks like it's an uphill battle.
The last episode ends in a relationship cliffhanger, will be interesting if this gets a green light for season 2. I would definitely like to see how season 2 solves the boys relational quandries.
Silent Night (2023)
Decent action scenes, good revenge story, but something was missing
I can't really place why I'm not into this movie. The action scenes are well done, there is some suspense, the revenge motivation is pretty standard, and the plot device that no one speaks is interesting, but still it just became a bit meh.
I like Joel Kinneman but never really thought of him as a particularly super action hero. I mean, his motivations in this movie is pretty clear cut but there were things that just didn't make the movie click for me.
I think one of the big things for me is that other than him getting his revenge on the gang, there weren't any thing else since we already know his son was already dead. It's wasn't like the gang kidnapped his wife and held her hostage, so there was nothing else at stake other than to kill them.
And then I guess that's were some of the disconnects like the scene with the bound gangster, and he simply puts the knife in front of the guy. Sure he has hands cuffed, but honestly? And that last scenes with the pschyo biche with the machine gun. He gets the drop on her, then puts his gun down expecting some kind of compassion play? She takes the opportunity to put a bullet in him and the detective.
So anyways, yeah I can understand the dad is going through his arc, but still some of those scenes just break the movie for me.
Mestari Cheng (2019)
A pleasant enough movie about moving on
This movie was a pleasant surprise. I am not one for some of these fish out of water, but I did get caught up with his back story and the slow burn romance that developed.
Getting to become besties with the older Fins took a bit of a stretch, but can see how they could develop a mutual respect and then a friendship thru food and their shared interest to help him with his search.
Where some of the convenient plot coincidences, like the busload of Chinese tourists getting stranded in front of the restaurant, and just by chance at the little grocery store has all the necessary components for him to make the most fabulous chinese meal - well - okay, kinda chuckled.
But aside from that, the movie is a decent watch. There's a lot worse out there to waste time on.
Run the Burbs (2022)
Wasn't impressed with first episode, but by episode 4 it's not bad
The first episode sort of just left me meh. But gave episode 2 a chance, and as the various characters started to build, each episode became more interesting. The first episode just tried ramming all the various characters in your face, and just felt like a bad SNL skit, but as the episodes progressed started to see the various layers of the characters showing up.
It's not a perfect series yet, but I am more interested now to see how each episode will turn out and willing to give the series a shot.
From a performance standpoint, I think the widowed grandfather is pretty cool. I was a bit skeptical with the wife and the daughter but they both have good enough to handle the range. It will be interesting as the season progresses on the changes that can be expected in these 2 characters.
In all, the laughs aren't like rofl, but there are some pretty good chuckles but it's more to see the how the family grows through the series.
The Freak Brothers (2020)
just no
I was so excited to watch this series. I even dug through my old collection of the original comics - most pages yellowed and musky - to refresh my fondest stories.
Woody Harrelson and Pete Davidson were perfect as Franklin and Phineas, sounding how I might have imagined them. The BIG disconnect was Goodman's miserable attempt at Fat Freddy sounding like Curly Joe from the 3 stooges. And honestly what gives with Tiffany Haddish as Fat Freddy's cat? Totally not cool with the gender swap.
I watched episode 1, 2 and just gave up midway through 3 with the stupid Jeff Bezo's thing. Fat Freddy's cat was smart, but not that smart. This could have been so much better if the writers were not so lazy.
The Clockwork Girl (2014)
Was like a Saturday morning cartoon
The story didn't seem too bad and I sort of got into the first 20 or so minutes of the movie, but as it progressed I just got more and more annoyed with the animation. I understand that this is a low budget movie and I guess one has to use what animation tools and staff are in their budget.
Koi wa tsuzuku yo doko made mo (2020)
Likeable characters, cute situations
This is a light romantic comedy with some bits of drama thrown in. I really enjoyed watching the actors, I liked watching Takero Satoh since his Kenshin days, but now having seen Mone Kamishiraishi just fell in love with her. I have since watched several of her other earlier movies such as Lady Maiko and recent Startup Girls.
Many of the episodes are fairly lightweight and makes for an enjoyable watch, nothing shocking or overly dramatic but just enough to make each an pleasant time. While the earlier episodes had a bit more medical tech situations, and of interest that this taking place in a cardiac ward - I am very familiar as I have been a patient a few times and have undergone several similar operations to make some of the situations interesting to me.
Some of the later episodes focused more on the love and relationships and less on medical situations. A few of the situations also were a bit cliche, but that happens in many of these types of series and its perfectly fine with me. As a spoiler alert there were no sudden or unexpected deaths or diseases.
While this series focused mainly on the doctor and nurse, there were other relationships that would have been nice to see develop further. But I have since learned there is a sequel to this series that focuses on this, so I am anxious to watch this sequel series Love Will Still Last Forever.
A ma de meng zhong qing ren (2013)
A decent romantic comedy of a bygone era
As another reviewer stated, I honestly don't know what the original reviewer was watching as it is totally not even close. But from that original reviewers only reviews all bad relating only to the sameTaiwanese director, I suspect there is some backstory to the hate vented.
That said, because of the reviews I started watching this movie not knowing what to expect, but as the movie proceeded I genuinely got totally wrapped into it.
The movie is a story told from a grandfather to his granddaughter on how the grandparents met and fell in love, and along the way teaching her a chunk of history of the Taiwanese movie scene. As the story unfolds we find that the grandmother is suffering from dementia and in a way is trapped back in that time, having now forgotten her husband and daughter.
But it's through the grandfather's recalling of that magical time period to his granddaughter is where he might have unlocked the way to reconnecting with his wife.
There are a few schmaltzy moments here and there, but in general many of the scenes played out well, and as I always sort of remember back to the 60s and 70s everything seemed simpler and even magical back then.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Maybe expecting too much to find another Ford
I honestly wanted to like this, thinking really how bad could it really be. I started to nod off after the first ten minutes. Being this is a movie about Han, with Ford embodying the character and soul of Solo, you would think casting someone with the same to play young Han would be paramount in their search. I have seen Alden in his previous movies and none of these show him to be in the class of Ford. Honestly think a younger Chris Pine would be much closer to the young Han than this kid. Very disappointing movie.
