Charmed (2018)
Cheesy show about witches, much like the original was.
The original show had likable women, who had loving chemistry to each other, put into silly plot lines that shouldn't be analyzed closely if you didn't want to destroy the fun.
I watched every episode of the original, cried when Shannon Doughtery left and almost stopped watching but Rose McGowan held her own and I watched every episode at least three times till the finale which made me cry.
So, even with my love for the original, this new series is fine. The new actresses had some great comedic moments, portrayed their anger, nerdiness and sensitivity well. I enjoyed their interactions and found their personalities to be well formed, if not a bit cliche.
Their Whitelighter might be fun but I'm on the fence about him
The plot line was campy and the effects much better than the original (computing power is much greater since then). This series will be as cheesy as the original.
The politics is what I've seen from actual Wiccan friends and lovers from my past and current Facebook news feeds. The inclusion of an LGBTQI main character is way overdue. There were only 3 brief encounters with LGBTQI people in the original and that always bothered me to not have polysexual and non-conforming genders represented when they are all too common among Pagan and Wiccan circles.
I'm not convinced the 1/10 and hateful reviews on IMDB are coming from fans of the original series as much as they are coming from 4Chan, men's groups and political trolls from out of the US. The non-US ratings are currently 2.4 while the US ratings are currently 4.5. The vast majority of 1/10 reviews have male names with random numbers behind them that have no other reviews. New IMDB accounts made just to attack this one series in a long line of accounts created to troll shows with a political message they disagree with. This show did insult Mango Mussolini.... There are about 8 scripts used in the reviews, nearly word for word identical but submitted by a new male name with random numbers behind it. It's as if this was a planned attack on this series like certain groups are doing on Facebook and Twitter in order to widen political rifts of US citizens...
This show is a fun, MOTW romp and nothing better or worse than Xena, Hercules, Charmed(Original) or Supernatural.
Star Trek: Dagger of the Mind (1966)
One of the better of season 1. Producers made a play for the Gunsmoke fandom.
This is one of my more favored episodes of the series. Morgan Woodward gave an excellent performance as a tortured mind escaped from the penal camp. James Gregory turned in a nice performance as the sadistic doctor that has been corrupted by his power over the patients. Marianna Hill was great eye candy although they didn't give her the lines to portray a credible doctor of psychiatry. At least she got to show off her chops in Godfather II years later. Her romantic interest with Kirk gave the show a few humorous points but the kisses between her and Shatner seemed so forced. Nimoy and Kelley turned in some excellent performances. This episode is where they finally started fleshing out Vulcan culture with the introduction of the Mind Meld. The scene where McKoy comes onto the bridge and expresses his doubts about Adam's version of Van Geldar's escape deepens McKoys character.
This plot is more like the theme of Star Trek that future incarnations would adhere too. A future society that has advanced methods and technology to treat age-old problems in a new way but sometimes with disastrous consequences. There were fewer plot holes and failures of basic science in this episode than many. It was well written to place a penal/mental health facility for dangerous offenders miles below the surface of a gas giant with an unbreathable atmosphere covered in a shield and only escapable by transporter. Still a man half crazed figured a way out... Maybe they shouldn't put central air conditioning ducts in a penal colony without bars or force fields every few meters? In room only climate controls? A machine that can remove memories from a brain is a fantastic discovery and I'm sure people would pay dearly to access it. Too bad the writers concluded it was 'evil' instead of just concluding that the person using it needs to be overseen by several colleagues and an AI assistant. While I don't believe in psychic phenomena and found the Mind Meld to be more fantasy than science it is great drama and part of the Star Trek universe. It got off to a great start in the scene between Nimoy and Woodward.
Morgan Woodward was a hook from the producers to the Gunsmoke crowd to sit down and watch this new fangled Star Trek. James Gregory also was a regular on Gun Smoke, Bonanza and The Big Valley and I remember my father sitting down to watch Star Trek being drawn in by the familiar faces from some of his favorite TV Westerns. He didn't watch for long because it wasn't really cowboys in space so I watched in reruns in the '70's.
Anyone that hasn't seen the remastered episodes they are cleaned up nicely and I have never seen TOS in this clarity before. The TV was always too fuzzy and the shows had lines and flecks of hairs or dust in the broadcast episodes from years of playing. The opening scene with the Enterprise over the penal colony planet is breath taking.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
It is horrifying. Never saw the original so no preconceptions,
I once saw a video on Facebook that got reported and pulled quickly. In the video was a man on a bicycle who is stopped at an intersection. He is in his helmet and pads and an 18 wheeler pulls up along side, The driver doesn't see the cyclist and starts to make a left turn and slowly the cyclist is taken under the wheels and ripped into a pulpy mess.
The disgust, awe, shock, dismay and then unsettled feeling that lasted for hours and glimpsed again for days later at seeing life snuffed out so easily and nonchalantly is the feeling that was left with me from this movie.
Jennifer Biel acts so terrified that all semblance of normality is gone. She doesn't notice her nose is streaming down into her mouth or the nasty muckiness that is smeared all over her face. She is screaming in terror and running for her life. None of the perfect make-up and appearance of Jennifer Love-Hewitt as she runs in ... Last Summer... or so many other so called horror movies where the actresses avoid all but a well placed spot of blood on their perfectly made up faces. No. Death and horror is a nasty dirty business.
If you want to hold to the 1970's purity of the original that I've read in other reviews then avoid this film. If you are a casual horror watcher then this is not your cup of tea. If you want to be scared and left with the feeling that life is fleeting and too easily snuffed then this is an experience for you.
Supernatural (2005)
Humor inside.....
You can read the hundreds of other reviews here that mention it's great drama, imaginative horror and out-of-the-box approach to supernatural mythology but the writers of this show almost always have a good twist of humor placed. I have laughed harder at some scenes in these episodes than shows that are designed to be comedies found around the networks the last 10 years. Jensen Ackles has an excellent sense of comedic timing and is the heart and soul of the show. He really deserves top billing. So if you are looking for a good laugh on the new Friday line-up then this is the show to tune into.
This show is becoming the Kevin Bacon of the of television series. If you had a favorite scifi, horror, fantasy or drama series over the last 10 years you will see an actor from those shows guesting on Supernatural. The fact that so many good actors are wanting guest spots on this speaks to it's quality.
Enjoy and be careful out the hellhounds in pink bows...
Supernatural: Asylum (2005)
Against the current here
The number of goofs in this episode was higher than the first 9. They don't follow their own rules about spirits where destruction of the body makes the spirit dissolve. This one dropped a second body. That body, and Dean, drop about 20 feet from Sam but then they are right with Sam. Flashlights go out in an unlighted asylum, at night, and we can still see everything. It's night but light is streaming through the windows. A ghost that died in 1960's is making cell phones calls? Come on! There is no way Sam could get a psychiatrist to see him in the same day he makes an appointment and the doctor talks to Sam like it wasn't his first visit. Sam and Dean knew there were other bodies in the asylum and innocent spirits still lurking and didn't do anything to help them. That doesn't seem like a thing the Winchester boys would do. Oh and after crawling around on a dirt filled mattress and all around a nasty asylum the girls' makeup and hair is perfect and not a smudge on her white shirt.
While the implementation of this episode had problems the premise was good and a few times I was not creeped out but nervous as Dean sat reading Elicots' journal. I just knew that an object so intensely personal to the ghost would draw it to the person violating it's sanctity. Elicot didn't appear. Maybe that is a fault for such an important object or place (like Elicot's office) should draw the spirit when a living being touches or enters. When they separate I want to scream... 'that's how you die! Always stay together and watch each others backs!' but they don't listen to me :o The Elicot spirit and his special ability was a very nice touch. It's prime-time show but I do wish the horror of Elicot strapping one of his victims down and using anticipation of torture to creep us out further.
Especially because of the lighting goofs I gave this a 4. Sudden darkness or the flickering of the whole scene's lighting as the flashlight flickers is all that more terrifying. The lighter coming or the flashlight reviving and instantly a spirit is in their face is shocking. I understand the directors wants us to see his scene but then make a mention or obvious connection by Elicot touching an electric socket and the lights coming on. Have the characters respond to the fact an asylum with no power suddenly has lights in the one room. Blue white lights flickering as electric arcs just like Elicot's finger power.
Seriously, MCG could have done better.
