Bullet Train (2022)
Entertainment at its best
I was expecting to get entertained when I went to see this movie in a local cinema one Friday night. These expectations were not only fulfilled, but greatly exceeded. This is a fine ride full of fun and not taking yourself too seriously. Casting and visuals are spot on. It certainly has the John Wick vibe to it regarding the choreography of action sequences. There are also respectful nods towards the visual esthetics of Asian action cinema in some positively shocking and borderline gory scenes. The dialogues are cool and fun, albeit not always hitting the mark with the same accuracy as Tarantino or Ritchie. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the script. Nothing Kubrickian, of course - it is just not this type of movie - but it was surprisingly clever for an action flick. There were several plot-twists you couldn't see coming from miles away, several character-driven sub-plots that were often intertwining in unexpected and wildly entertaining ways, and the story overall was satisfyingly fun to follow. Overall a pure unadulterated fun, best enjoyed with your mates Friday night at cinema, or at home plus a cold one or two.
About Time (2013)
Near touchstone of the perfect date movie
Is this flick too sentimental? Yes, it is. Too cheesy? Yes, in many ways. Too sweet even? Of course, yes. Yet still something to watch together with somebody with whom you want to feel eternal sadness and joy, simultaneously and together. Or alone, with a glass of nice red and feeling sorry for your sad self. Not a perfect movie by no means. But still a near touchstone of the perfect date movie. Come and touch it. Preferably not alone!
Polar (2019)
Meh. Except Mads Mikkelsen.
This movie is John Wick for nine year olds. Only worth of watching because of Mads Mikkelsen. This dude knows how to roll. Couple of OK gags as well. But, overall, pretty boring.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Awesomeness
This movie is exceptional. It really is Love everything about it. The storytelling, the visuals, the characters, everything. Watch it! Do it now! I mean now!
Om det oändliga (2019)
Meh.
Did not like it. Like, at all. Couple of stars for the visual content. The images were well composed and pleasing to ones eye. Apart from that, a pretentious artsy tiresome tick-tack of the old clock.
Music Box: Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage (2021)
Good as a document of the events, but falls flat when trying to explain the reasons behind this mess
It has been discussed here enough already. The documentary footage is great, but the narrative dealing with the reasons of this mess misses its mark completely. This coming from a centrist liberal, who is allergic to nu metal and frat boys. The human stupidity has no color or sex.
