All Girls Weekend (2016)
Poster is a bit of a tease, but still enjoyed it
I picked this to watch on Amazon prime after looking at the poster. Who doesn't want to see 5 gorgeous women in shorts walking around in the woods? Well, I waited through the entire movie and that never happened. But, luckily, the story kept me engaged so I didn't mind it. It's about 5 friends who get lost while hiking, or so it seems. In fact, the forest is haunted and it's trapping people inside. I would give it a 10 for being original in that it's not a slasher with the women running away from a slow-moving killer, only to trip on a branch and then he's right on top of them. There's also NO nudity or Lesbian scene, so if that's what you like in horror films, you'll be very disappointed. The girls are still very easy on the eyes and, for the most part, are very good actresses. I especially liked the last 2 girls. I'm also big on the outdoors and this made me want to go the mountains this weekend. I would recommend it to others. Better than most horror films out there. I would also recommend to the filmmakers to change the poster, but I guess it got me to watch it, so maybe they shouldn't.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Watchable, but won't change anyone's life
Just wanted to put in my 2 cents in about this show, because everyone seems to have such extremely opposite reactions to it. It's possible to enjoy a show or movie without it having to be life changing or having it be the best thing ever. It is also not the worst thing anybody has ever made to deserve one star. The things I enjoyed: Above everything else, the editing. It was very cool how they transitioned from stuff happening in the present to the past. It flowed naturally. The writing also has to be given a 10 in the ability to build up expectations and keeping you wanting to watch the next episode. For a guy my age, I was surprised how hooked I got on a show about high schoolers, but I had to know what happened (even if that was disappointing - see below). The acting -- I really thought these actors had to be like 30 years old since their acting was so good. To my surprise, they're all about 20. The thing I didn't like: The writing-- there are a few plot holes. Mostly I didn't buy why some of these students were so afraid that the tapes would get out. Marcus, Alex, Jessica, Ryan and Zach had not done anything so major that their future would be ruined. And it seems that Courtney coming out to her gay fathers would not be a big deal (maybe if she had strict, straight parents that would have been more believable). They're willing to shield a 2-time rapist to keep some minor stuff from coming out. Then, there's what many people have pointed out -- that Clay for sure had not done anything wrong, so why is he on the tapes and why is he blaming himself when she's the one who mistreated HIM and made fun of him with the "helmet" comments from the beginning. But hey, even with all that, I was entertained and it kept me hooked. So if you're just looking for something to binge, it's not a bad way to spend time. And no, it won't save anyone's life or stop anyone from committing suicide. In my opinion, it seems to justify and glorify suicide a bit.
Criminal Activities (2015)
Enjoyable, low-budget crime thriller
Once again, everyone is comparing a low budget flick to mega Hollywood films. While this film does feature John Travolta, it's obvious that they just used his name to get the audience's interest. But don't let that dissuade you from watching it. All the acting from the lesser-known actors is still very good, and in fact, might actually even be better. Travolta plays your typical mob boss, but the guys involved are anything but your mob underlings. It's a formula I've seen before, but the twist later on in the film gives it a unique twist that made it worthwhile. Even if stuff didn't make sense during the film, it came together at the end. It's nothing that will rock your world, but it was enjoyable enough for an hour and a half.
