Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Daddy issues: King of Mehsters
So let me start by saying I love and enjoy the flashbacks of the Big 3 original Monarch members, Old Shaw and Monarch current day. Those are interesting and fun. The biggest negative is the godawful main 3 that were forced to watch. Kentaro is the only character that is even watchable and the only rational-ish one. May is sneaky and underhanded but yet gets forgiven even after pulling some BS on the group and constantly wanting to go home. Cate is an annoying and just idiotic person who is proven to be a liar and cheater and then forgives the person who nearly destroyed the group just like that cause she's in love with her. The choices the kids make are just beyond stupid and irrational and if it was just Kentaro or if the other two were actually likable would be better than what we have. I was expecting it to be more in the past and the first discovery but we only get snippets. At the time of writing this there's 2 episodes left and it's renewed for a S2 but I hope they just cut out the 3 protags and focus somewhere else.
Twisted Metal (2023)
It's Fun and True to the series.
While the first episode is a very good introduction to the current world it's amazing how the show kept the characters, and their alternate game personas, true to their origins. Spoilers ahead.
The world:
Absolutely fantastic set up as we see in the episodes of how the world became how it is and why in Twisted Metal there's so much chaos in the world. Having it happen in 03 kept the soundtrack awesome as, obviously, no new music had been made at that point. Seeing big cities wall themselves off and trade via Milkmen was a nice way to set the Car Combat up. Story building just gets better from there. There's even a couple old boss references from the TM1&2 games littered around as destroyed vehicles. 8.5/10
The Plot
Very easy. Very simple. Get from point A to B then Back to A in a certain timeframe. Easy to understand. There's also finding out who you were thanks to a traumatic experience and revenge but those are more messy as they go on but the conclusions are great. 9/10.
The Racers
OH MY GOD MY FAVORITE PART.
John Doe
Let's start with the man, Anthony Mackie aka John Doe. Perfect to the story line of Amnesia wiping his memory clean they gave him a better background than white supremacy group advocate. This man has really done well outside the MCU. Showing Roadkill at the end was just the icing on the cake.
Quiet
Stephanie's character starts out a little rough and honestly boring. It's only once she starts communicating more and more do we see her character shine brightly. Her story of slave to slave in the city to bandit isn't bad. Her brother Loud isn't in it enough to really make a mark.
Sweet Tooth
S tier acting from Samoa Joe and Will Arnett. Was worried about how it'd go but they play perfectly to the insanity that is Sweet Tooth. Having him be a child Star that snapped and spent life in Insane Asylums, including the one from Black, having him grow up after having a major child Star mental snap was way better than I could've hoped for and his back and forth with the characters especially Stu is really memorable. Even got the ST Special move down
Twister
While not in the series till close to the end Twister quickly becomes a favorite with her attitude and demeanor. She brightens up any scene she's in and the F1 car is just the chefs Kiss. Unknown if we will see a sister or not and no the F1 car doesn't cause a twister like in game.
Bloody Mary
A small character who will be bigger in S2 she makes her mark and nails her characters backstory of being in love but being rejected still from John. Not much to say except I like a psycho Bloody Mary to the Brooding one from the games.
Outlaw(s)
Oh my god the top tier Antagonist from this series. Not only does it include 3 versions of the Outlaw drivers it mails the first model perfectly including the .50 cal special move. The Main antagonist Officer Stone, named after the TM3 Driver but resembling the TM1 driver and Car and his two lackeys the Brother and Sister duo, TMHO drivers, stole the scene everywhere he went. From the voice to the bravado he was high key one of the top 3 actors this series.
Mr. Grimm
Shown briefly in a flashback. Will have more of a role in S2
Raven
Formerly the Driver of Shadow the Hearse from the games She is the ruler of New Chicago and hired John to do a run to New San Fran and back in 10 days. She also manipulates the environment John is in after he completes their bargain but gets forced into going into the S2 tournament after restoring his memories. Interesting to see where she goes.
Juggernaut
Former Boss in a few of the old TM games, is an ally in this one and is drove by Twisters Lesbian Partner.
Preacher
Instead of being an old man he's now a middle 30s cult leader of the roving band of "Religious" zealots. Made up of crack using submissive hicks and femdom women he rules them fairly but not strict. Will be seen in S2
Dollface
Already confirmed to be Johns sister and probably the most changed so far out of the cast. Instead of being trapped in the mask it looks like it's just a normal mask instead most likely a ballistic one. Seen in a post credits scene in Episode 10 only.
Other confirmed racer for S2
Axel. Shown only In a photograph of a back shot with giant tires around him. The connection to his machine may not be permanent like before and could be done by himself instead of forced by his father.
Characters: 10/10
This show has more positives than negatives and really the only negative is pacing. It's great for a watch and I will admit episode 9&10 made me smile so much. Hoping the episodes are a little longer next season.
If you made it here thank you for reading.
