The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Worthy reboot of the original Matrix imo
I loved the original movie, ignoring the sequels, there is now two fantastic Matrix movies in my opinion. I say this because the story arch left me guessing at points, plus there were some spectacular moments, and I always loved the actual matrix world rather than the outside the Matrix world, and this spends a good amount of time in the Matrix. No rubbish cgi like the sequels. Plus I loved some of the adjustment bureau type location jumps too.
Moon (2009)
I highly recommend this compelling movie set on the Moon
Set on the moon Sam Bell is coming to the end of a 3 year contract harvesting some kind of Helium compound from the moon which supplies most of the earths energy.
He's only companion is the talking computer called Gerty and video messages sent from his wife from earth. That's right the corporation is too stingy to pay to fix it.
Slightly slow to build up this story initially, Sam Bell is going a little mad having spent so much time on his own, when he goes out in one of the moon buggies to check up on one of the harvester machines. He's slight craziness hallucinates someone standing in the falling rocks ahead and he has a nasty accident, crashing into the harvester.
When he wakes up, the film kicks into another gear - always leaving the viewer slightly guessing, working out what's going on in the moon station with Sam Bell is compelling stuff. This is such a good movie. The actor Sam Rockwell is essentially doing the whole thing on his own - like a Castaway set in space - with Kevin Spacey (Gerty) as a talking Wilson, which is very impressive as he carries the movie brilliantly.
It's a very satisfying Movie as the questions it makes you ask about what is happening and what's going to happen are all answered by the end of the movie.
I love the look of the movie - clean, futuristic, interesting - and the special effects are super and completely convincing.
It's not perfect, I thought there were a couple of mess-ups with the plot regarding the accidents that had happened in the past - whether they had happened when Sam Bell arrived or whilst he has been working. I won't go into detail or it'll reveal to much of the plot.
I thought the plot had some good emotional depth - helped by great acting, and a great plot; for example - moments of sadness and moments of self-sacrifice.
I won't go into detail about what happens but it is fascinating and well worth watching. I highly recommend watching this movie.
The Birds (1963)
A must see - shocking and scary
I read the book several years a go, and I saw a clip of this on Jonathan Ross film show, it look interesting, but I didn't know how they could bring it to the screen and make it as harrowing and scary as the book. I got the DVD for Xmas, so I've finally watched it. Hitchcock did it with aplomb in what is a hauntingly scary film that surpasses the book.
It is also surprisingly fast paced for a Hitchcock film.
What starts with a seagull attack on the leading lady builds into a crescendo of bird attacks and then an extremely dramatic finale when your heart is in your mouth - will they get out alive, and that question is never answered as well as what on earth is making the birds behave the way they are.
There are so many scary and shocking set pieces to mention - watch the film, you won't be dissatisfied.
The stand out moment I will mention is at the school, there are 2 crows on the climbing frame, and it cuts to the leading lady having a cigarette. As she finishes it cuts back to the climbing frame showing one of the most shocking images of the film - brilliant.
I loved this film; fast paced, with some extremely shocking and scary moments, and a hanging sense of dread all the way to the end. I plead that no one remakes this - the special effects are fantastic and the look of the film adds so much to it - this could not be achieved with modern film and computer trickery.
Overall a must see for any Hitchcock fan, and any horror fan for that matter.
The Thing (1982)
This is a terrifically shocking Horror!
I loved it, its terrific one of the best horrors I've seen in ages. I remember it from when I was younger, on viewing again it was just as good if not better! This film contains some of the most shocking visuals in any horror.
Researchers out in Antarctica alone stumble across something buried in the ice, which turns out not to be very friendly... the film follows what happens to them all.
The whole desperation of the situation is so intoxicatingly brilliant that it builds to a Russian roulette type scenario where we're going to find out who is the alien, in one of the highlights of the film.
When the alien shows itself on many occasions the special affects are superb. Better than anything I've seen using computer trickery the visuals are like something from hell - I still struggle to keep watching throughout! The scene where the doctor is trying to resuscitate someone who has died is a truly haunting moment - you have to see it.
Loved this film make sure you watch it... in the dark :-)
My Little Eye (2002)
Like the concept. But the plot just doesn't hang together
Yes and No. I really like this whole concept of the reality show gone wrong and a horror movie is always good in my book. But for all the bits I liked about the film, it didn't add up to a whole that I particularly liked. But yes there were some good bits.
The idea of people in a house being films raises all interesting possibilities about how people react when they're isolated, and how they would cope if people started dieing, or they had to start killing each other
I thought "house of 9" was really good because the behaviour of the characters was very interesting, when they realised their host wanted them to kill each other.
Here only one of the characters seems to have any idea that something dodgy is going on, and then when people start dieing its over so quickly, there isn't really time to watch the interactions of the people under stress and terror.
Some of the build up is good though like the whole child that killed his parent's thing coming back. However I just didn't believe the rest of the plot. When the guy goes on the web; if there was nothing on the internet about this, then what was the internet site at the beginning which they applied through surely that would still be on the web, and there would have been at least some information about the show
that it had been canned
that it had disappeared. However the idea that they were being watched in secret by some group of rich clients with the intent on watching them all die was pretty scary.
Anyway forget that, its ridiculous how this guy managed to wire a broken global satellite navigation system and get it to act as a modem to hook up to his computer. He also managed to try and hack into the website with some of the worlds most sophisticated hackers. I have a couple of questions here; why don't you send an email for help? Why don't you then email friends and family and find out if they know about the show? OR ASK THEM FOR HELP! And all this seemed to happen in a very short time span. I guess suspension of disbelief is required but when its all about being a reality show gone wrong, which is meant to frighten with its reality type visuals
then when the plot is anything but, its just wrong. There's also this sequence about someone that visits, which just doesn't make any sense.
The first murder that we know is a murder is very shocking. But once the secret is out I was really not scared any more. I knew that each person was going to die in turn, it was just waiting for it to happen, and thinking, man, just escape
leave the house! As I say I like the concept, and there are some good ideas, and some bits that were a little bit scary. But for me the plot didn't really hang together, they didn't keep us guessing long enough on who the killer was, and they didn't get the people scared enough when they realised people were dieing. And man if I'd had email access I would have sent some emails and called in the army to get me outta there!!!!
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
I did not like or enjoy; plodding, obscure and painful
I'm fairly easy going. I like a lot of different films, most films I at least enjoy. I found this painful to watch, I really didn't like this film at all; mainly due to its plodding pace, obscure plot and horrible characters.
The opening credits animation is brilliant, but then it didn't get any more exciting than that. The narrative from Downey Jr was cheesy, irritating, and was intrusive to the flow of the film. I didn't find it funny.
The biggest problem was that I didn't like any of the characters in the film, the murder mystery wasn't at any times tense... and it just stumbled along for an hour or so. I thought it was then going to finish, what had come was unsatisfying - but I wanted it to finish... but it didn't.
It then went on for 1/2 hour or so more. And I will admit it got a bit more interesting (no more narrative, hooray... until the end). Oh and the scene where Downey Jr found himself auditioning for an acting role was really good.
I love murder mysteries and detective stories... but I just found this too obscure. And as I say I really didn't care what happened to any of the lead characters.
I don't remember any of the visuals being particularly great (apart from the opening animation which I liked). I don't remember enjoying any of the music, I didn't find anything particularly artistic about this movie.
I was really looking forward to this movie after what I'd heard about it, and after watching the trailers. But I was extremely disappointed; my advice is avoid it, save your money for something more entertaining.
Braindead (1992)
Most Entertaining horror movie - A LOT of gore
I am a horror movie fan. And I have to highly recommend this film; it is by far the most entertaining (comedy) horror movie I've ever watched.
The plot involves the hero's mum getting bitten by a monkey, and turning into a zombie. The hero tries to keep it under wraps, but slowly more and more people end up getting bitten; turning into zombies, which he keeps sedated in the basement. Then all hell breaks loose when a group of people gatecrash his house to have a party...
The gore comes thick and fast, and it ranges from realistic and disgusting to outrageously over the top. You get too see A LOT of gore in this film.
It builds to two of the best scenes I've seen in a horror movie, one where the hero goes crazy massacring a house full of zombies with a lawnmower! (This must be where the film gets its reputation as the bloodiest movie ever made). And then the final scene is one of the most hilarious things I've seen all year.
Watch it you won't be disappointed.
