The Irrational (2023)
Character-driven fun
Found this to be a fun watch. The true standouts are the performances by Jesse L Martin and the scene-stealing Travina Singer who is absolutely delightful every single time she's on screen.
The murders are not overly hard to solve, but it's the charm of the ensemble that make it a fun watch. There is an overarching story beyond the weekly cases, so definitely should be watched in order. It has so much potential that I hope they are able to flex a bit more in the future.
I truly hope they get a season two, to really hone the characters, take them deeper than charicatures, and find out what this show can be.
King of Thieves (2018)
Charming Old Fashioned Caper
No, there are no big car chases, or explosions. No fancy lasers, or big combat scenes. However, it is a fun story of aging burglars looking to score their final hurrah, portrayed by a slew of veteran actors who still have the skills to go from dottering elder to angry thug.
Loved the use of the clips from their previous films as flashbacks. It was a refreshing change from CGI or Photoshop aging.
Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears (2020)
Fun romp
I think anyone who is a fan of the classic matinee action adventure film will enjoy this globe-trotting romp. There's humor, romance, beautiful scenery, murder, intrigue, and a need for justice to be served. Anyone who is a fan of Romancing the Stone or Indiana Jones will enjoy this film, even if they are not a devotee of the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries TV series.
Essie Davis positively glows on the big screen and brings all of the clever, firecracker-spirit we've grown to love about The Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher to the big screen beautifully. Fans of Nathan Page's Detective Inspector Jack Robinon will be delighted to see how well he translates to the big screen and he holds his own among the veteran film actors.
Daniel Lapaine is a marvelous cad as Lord Lofthouse and Rupert Penry-Jones is charming as his long-suffering brother. I could have used more of the amazing Miriam Margolyes, as she reprised her role as Phryne's Aunt Prudence, but as usual, she does not disappoint. Izabella Yena is a newcomer that will be one to watch out for, I think.
Yes, the pacing and energy are different from the TV series, but there is much to enjoy from this film. Are there plot holes? Yes. Would I have liked to have more of the tight ensemble that made the show so successful? Absolutely. But I find I like it more after every viewing.
Fans of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries will note the lack of screen time for some of the beloved TV series ensemble. But it was good to see them reunited, however briefly. If there is a sequel, and I hope there will be, it would be marvelous to get more time with them. And, as much as I loved the beautiful desert scenes, I would not mind at all if we had more of 1929 Melbourne in the next go round.
Ghostbusters (2016)
Perfect? No. But loads of fun, yes.
Very fun reboot of the series. Loved the chemistry of Kristin, Melissa, Leslie, and Kate. Chris Hemsworth's character was definitely silly and probably sillier than necessary, but he seemed to be having a good time.
Enjoyed the jabs to the internet troll haters. Some great one-liners. But even more than that I really loved all the nods to the original, including the cameos. Definitely watch all the way through.
Have watched it three times now and enjoyed it each time.
